Deal alert / Paul McCartney: Flowers in the Dirt super deluxe edition box set

Stunning deal!

Not many box sets have created as much controversy as Paul McCartney‘s Flowers in the Dirt super deluxe edition. Very expensive and with key content delivered as downloads, it was in many ways an easy box to avoid, which is a shame since the core content of the Costello demos and the 1988 band demos (the latter exclusive) are superb. When SDE reviewed it, we called it “beautiful, but flawed”.  Anyway, with a fantastic price in Amazon Italy today, the time may have come to finally pull the trigger and complete your ongoing Paul McCartney Archive Collection!

This package which includes four books, three CDs (also included as hi-res files) and a DVD and *those* downloads is just £78 (€87) right now compared to £124 in the UK!! A stunning price and by far the cheapest this has ever been (at least on this side of the Atlantic).

  1. Andy P says:

Sorry to be pedantic, but with the best will in the world 87 euro is nowhere near £68, I think you will find £78 is nearer the mark. Still a good deal though compared to the previous price. Cheers

  2. Stevie B says:

Great Deal. Thank you. I wonder if ‘Give my Regards to Broad Street’ will ever get the Super Deluxe Edition treatment? I do hope so it’s a gem of an album and difficult to get even the CD release (with a couple of bonus tracks) from a number of years back.

    • Steve Hawes says:

It’s the one I’m waiting for too Stevie!

    • Stevie B says:

Thanks (the other) Stevie B. I’d love an SDE of London Town. There’s loads of unreleased stuff out there for all of the Wings albums, just check out the stuff posted on YouTube in the last couple of months.

  3. Richard Bristow says:

I work it out to be around £87 with post and packing and a currency transaction charge on your credit card :o) still ordered it though, thanks Paul

  4. Mark Turrell says:

Still way overpriced with missing content. I’ve managed to pick up most of these sde’s for between $35 -$70 by waiting for special deals, and I won’t pay more than $40 for this.

  5. mike says:

Agreed still way overpriced, not a good deal for one short extra disc of demos, downloads which are freely available now and dvd no one watches.

    • Paul Sinclair says:

Hang on a sec….it is what it is – as has been well discussed. The merits of the product are basically irrelevant when comparing on price with another and concluding that it’s a deal. It was £135 on Amazon UK and it’s now under £80 – that’s a good deal for this product (whatever you may think of it).

    • Ken Croteau says:

A UK ebay seller was offering these for $70 shipped this week. Like others here my limit was $60 but I had generated some ebay Bucks and just went for it. Looking forward to it’s arrival.

  6. Kim says:

    £69.53 on Amazon Germany!

  7. Gerbrand says:

    It’s €77 on amazon.de (other sellers) !

    • Paul Sinclair says:

Indeed… although remember to compare shipping and bear in mind Amazon’s returns policy is likely to be more generous than a third party seller.

  8. RJS says:

In 12 months time the people who like to “hold music in their hands” will be able to pick up a lovely golden brown coloured vinyl copy of the original album (that they’ll never play!) for a bargain forty quid.

  9. Domingo says:

I always play my records into my turntable, despite to be golden, blue or black… I love “touch” the music. Am I a mad?

  10. Chris says:

Sold out at amazon.de from third party seller :-/

  11. Kauwgompie says:

For USA buyers this does not make sense. A third party seller has this up on Amazon.com for $93 + $4 shipping. The total including shipping on Amazon.it comes out to $118.
I’d buy it for may be $60. An average album, made better w the Costello songs, but still wayyyy overpriced. Just no words for how Macca is shamelessly ripping off his fans left and right.
Check out other artist 3cd +1dvd boxes, they are half the price and also include a nice book. At this price, still a firm no from me.

  12. JasonC says:

Thanks Paul. I’d seen this recently go up in price and thought I’d missed getting a deal on it. Checked a local record store last week and it was still €159. Sub-€100 is good psychologically!! As I’ve said before, although the amount of music and rarities disappoints (and I really wanted a CD with Flying To My Home to be in this box) everything else in these editions is generally excellent – lots to read and get stuck into, high quality materials etc.

  13. Mark says:

Thanks Paul and it’s a pretty good deal but Black Friday’s not that far away so think I’ll wait and see…

  14. voxstarstream says:

“Deal” is over, guess I’ll have to wait! I did pick up Dylan’s “Basement Tapes Raw” (Bootleg Series Vol. 11) on Amazon US for only 48.99 USD…and I signed up for the Amazon credit card which knocked off $20, so the grand total with tax was 33.52 USD. Not a bad deal!

  15. bob says:

good deal but ill wait for better. I got the 2 cd release of the new album and the original cd so ill be okay. I think Had they released this package without the downlaod only stuff, and included all that on a cd in the box this would have been a 180 degree reversal and we the fans would have super praised this to the ceiling and above, and jumped on this deal no questions.

  16. ken says:

I’ve enjoyed it. It took too long for the deal, Temptation got the better of me.

  17. Bob says:

I pre-ordered it after a lot of thought , and am not disappointed by the musical content . I would much prefer a physical copy of the download only content , but it is what it is . What I really would like in the future is less bookage . I really didnt need a book of Barney Bubbles drawings in the Wings Over America set . Four books in this package is 3 1/2 books too many . The Ram set was perfect , but so far that was the only set that met and exceeded my hopes and expectations . Lets hope the Red Rose Speedway set is more to OUR specs , not Pauls accountants . I did notice no ” coming next ” was included this time …

    • Kauwgompie says:

I agree, no matter how many books they stuff into a box set, I never touch them. It’s mostly pictures anyway. To me the box sets are all about the music. The Verve’s Urban SDE has a small booklet and 5 discs of music and a dvd. That’s an outstanding boxset to me. No nonsense with coffee table books, books with photographs, excessive amounts of dvd’s, it should all be about the music.
The new U2 Joshua SDE, it’s kind of mediocre. It contains a giant book with photographs by The Edge. Sorry but couldn’t care less. A guy who plays guitar pretty well now forces us to look at his photographs. It’s a bit pathetic to me. Where are the demo’s, alternate takes and outtakes of the Joshua Tree sessions? That box doesn’t give us much insight into the entire creative process behind one of the most successful albums of all time. A shame.
Paul, may be we should have a discussion about what fans really like in box sets. When they are willing to fork out large amounts of money and when not. I bet most don’t care about the fancy books, the additional vinyl when you buy a cd box set and keep dvd’s to a minimum.

      • RJS says:

I totally agree. I like box sets with a cardboard flip top lid with the CDs in mini LP style sleeves and concise liner notes. Good examples include The Smiths Complete and the recent Luke Haines’ solo collection. Neat and small, not to mention space saving. No excessive read it / look at it once nonsense. It is, like you say, all about the music.

      • Jonathan says:

It’s an interesting topic… I’m just getting into collecting box sets .. for me as a musician I love listening to demos of future classic material… e.g. Beach Boys “Good Vibrations” box set.
Presentation is also very important .. I want something reasonably conspicuous on the shelf that draws interest. Stevie Wonders ” Close of a Century” is beautiful .. and is a great example with accompanying quality biography.
Agree don’t something indulgent and gimmicky .
The whole package should be musically valid and look good.

  18. Matthew Charles says:

Damn, didn’t get an email for this one…

  19. Paul English says:

Got it at €88 from Amazon Italy.
    Thank you Paul

  20. Bobby's Dad says:

Still using Italy as a reference, it’s now gone up to €118.18 from Amazon Italy. [£106.47, which is $178.87 in Aussie $’s, not including postage.]
    Outrageous…….

  21. Frank says:

Still waiting for more new Archive Collection releases (still missing Wild Life, Red Rose Speedway, London Town, Back To The Egg). Does anyone know?

  22. Francis says:

Still expensive! I feel sorry for Paul as his bank account most be low in money.

  23. Gerbrand says:

Bummer. Third party seller at amazon.de (moviemars.de) has cancelled my order due to “error in the listed price”. It was €77…

    • Ken says:

Yep, got the same cancellation email. Not even a huge McCartney fanatic but have the original album and thought this would be a nice upgrade. Oh well.
