Deal alert / Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Live Anthology 7LP vinyl

Here’s a turn up for the books… after being out of print for ages, and needing $500+ to purchase one, an apparent ‘warehouse find’ has given Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers fans the opportunity to snag the 7LP vinyl edition the superb Live Anthology box set for a decent price.

The 2009 box set features live recordings drawn from 30 years of live performances (1978-2007) as chosen by producers Tom Petty, Mike Campbell and Ryan Ulyate.  The 51 tracks were mastered “directly from the uncompressed 24-bit 96K files” and pressed on seven audiophile quality vinyl LPs. This set includes a 24-page 12″ x 12″ deluxe book with liner notes by Tom Petty, Warren Zanes, Bill Flanagan, Robert Hilburn, Joel Selvin, Austin Scaggs, and Phil Sutcliffe.

This deal will be in the main of interest to US fans, since for some reason Amazon US aren’t shipping across the Atlantic (to the UK at least). For those in Europe, you have to go via third party sellers, so for UK residents this link should be of interest.

  1. Paul Wren says:

Yes, mine weighs 2590 grammes, so this is definitely the 2018 repress. Laugh or cry? I choose to laugh as I still got it at a sub £100 price from Rarewaves in the USA and didn’t have to pay import tax either! Probably wouldn’t have bought it though if I’d realised it was a repress.

    • Colin says:

      Unfortunately I wasn’t so lucky!

      Hi
Be grateful if you can provide tracking reference number and details of carrier as item has not arrived and it is now outside the Amazon delivery timescale. (Order placed in late June)

      Regards

      Response
Thank you for your email and purchase with us.
I am very sorry to hear you have not yet received your purchase, review of the order shows it has been completed and the items did ship without delay via Standard Mail which unfortunately does not carry tracking details.
However given the time frame and your location the order can be presumed lost and policy would be to re-ship a replacement with tracking however in this instance we do not have additional inventory of this edition available therefore a full refund will be applied back to your account immediately. We certainly apologize for both the disappointment and concern caused by this delayed or lost shipment and for being unable to ship a replacement at this time.

      Best regards,
      Customer Service
      Rarewaves-USA

Seems highly unusual that they would send a £100 item with no tracking and be in the position of having to refund customers claims in all such instances. A comment below indicates their price rose to £168 so I was somewhat suspicious – although other purchasers appear to have received the item

  2. Cosby Sweater says:

just confirmed by jpc Germany: it is a 140g-repress

  3. Chris Squires says:

Mine turned up today. It is the 140g repress version. Not happy. Been sold a pup as the saying goes. And yes, it matters.

    • Cosby Sweater says:

@Chris: where did you order and how did you recognize the repress. My order from jpc is on its way. FWIW jpc took the item from their webstore.

      • Chris Squires says:

It’s difficult Cosby as there are no outward clues.

        Directly from Discogs..which is accurate…
NOTE: The 2018 repress is visually identical to the original 2009 release (packaging, barcode and matrices). The only way to identify the original from the repress is the weight of the vinyl (180 gram (original) or 140 gram (repress). The hype sticker on the repress erroneously indicates the vinyl weight as 180 gram.

Now if you don’t want to open it up and weigh the records individually the original weighs in at about 2780g and my copy weighs in at 2589g and “Nick” from another thread says his weighed in at 2601g. The gap is big enough to give it away. But you can weigh your records individually too.

It’s odd, if you were going to sneak out an entirely unannounced repress and make it look exactly like the original, right down to the ©s and ℗s then why get the weight wrong. And if you were making the weight deliberately 140g so the two CAN be distinguished then why not announce it as the repress if you are afraid people will get them mixed up. It doesn’t make any sense.

      • Chris Squires says:

aaargh. Forgot to answer the other part of your questions – damned no edit function – I got it from Rarewaves USA as an amazon UK third party sale. £98. Which in itself isn’t a bad price seeing as they are now selling it for £168.

      • Chris Squires says:

double arrrgh – still damned no edit function – just weighed 4 of the 7 records and all of them are between 155g and 160g, no doubt the others would be the same. Obviously different, but close enough to the originals. it also explains why the difference between the original box and the new box is only around 180 to 190g and not 240g plus.

        • Cosby Sweater says:

Thanks Chris. My parcel is stuck at the post office, so I will be able to weight it next weekend. In the meantime I will start writing my script for a new TV show called „Chris Squires – Vinyl Detective“

          • Chris Squires says:

As long as my sidekick is Olivia Colman I will be happy….,
I also meant the difference should be 280g not 240g

  4. jusread says:

read on discogs that this is an apparent 2018 140g repress

  5. Hannes Schulze says:

this MUST be a reprint. Why should they appear in different parts of the world suddenley Amazon US, JPC)?

  6. B57 says:

Gerry Harvey is a world class jerk.

    Australian resident

  7. Larry Davis says:

This vinyl box IS nice, no doubt, but the best version is the BestBuy box, which has a bonus 5th CD, a BluRay audio disc, some vinyl, books, and more…I used to have it but sold it as I needed money…I may rebuy it in the future though…

  8. Chris Squires says:

Any ideas why amazon.com will not ship to the UK? It can’t be a new policy like the Australian debacle can it? Or is it just for this item?

Just tried another dummy purchase…it’s just this item…how odd.

    • colm47 says:

Won’t ship to Ireland either Chris. Just this box.

Even though my Buffalo Springfield is on the way from the US of A.

  9. Scott says:

Bought off JPC Germany above, £150 delivered. Very happy. Thanks

  10. Ken.e says:

Got it from Amazon.com. Thanks so much, looking forward to spinning it. I almost bought it 2 years ago but it kept getting out of my price range on an ebay site I knew of. Love it on CD

  11. Richard Lamming says:

This can also be found on importcds.com at £115 including shipping to the United Kingdom (150 US dollars). I think they are an offshoot/parent of WOWHD. I’ve found them pretty reliable up to this point. They seem to have a decent record on customs – if you get me. Am awaiting my Guns N Roses box from them so may still end up with egg on face!

  12. Allan Johansen says:

Sorry to be a pest, but the original 5CD-2DVD-1Blu-ray-Bootleg LP-box had 62 tracks on the 5CDs, leaving 11 off of these (Okay, high quality) 7 LPs. Was lucky to find the box at Walmart/US for $100!

  13. David says:

Listed at £928,80, did anyone get this?

  14. -SG- says:

This one came out during the big US recession while business were shutting down everywhere, as well as vinyl being very unpopular, and it was getting increasingly difficult to get a good new turntable, so the fact this got lost in a warehouse then does not surprise me. As I have heard from people who have gotten it, it is definitely genuine deadstock from 2009, so this will not last. Incredible find. Indeed if it were not in such big demand, it would likely just turn up in the usual secondary channels without fanfare for much less. It does make you wonder though, how many were really pressed.

    • -SG- says:

Well, I’ve read further and the word now it is supposedly a 140g repress, with a 180 hype sticker mistakenly placed on the cover. So who knows. Maybe some deadstock found, mixed with a repress? Who knows. The whole thing sounds a bit dodgy now. Point being, there are more to be had on vinyl or stick with the sub $20 cd set.

  15. Ken Evans says:

I have this box on CD – if you even think you like Petty even a little bit, you need this – this very much serves the same role for him as the 1985 live box did for Bruce, but it’s even longer and of course spans a few more decades. Lots of covers you don’t here them play anywhere else on record.

  16. The Golden Age Of _ _ _ _ _ _ ` _ says:

I nearly went for this but with an additional £30+ in Customs & Post Office costs I decided against. I have the S.E. Deluxe box with LP/CD/Bluray which is superb.

I`d like one of those Tears For Fears box`s when they turn up, hur hur.

  17. MARK LEVY says:

    Not on CD then?

  18. Paul Wren says:

OK, I’ve bought this via Amazon UK (third party retailer based in the USA) at £98 + £3 postage. There may be 18% import taxation as well, but this is still way below the original 2,500 issue resale items via Discogs etc which start at £150 plus postage/tax from the USA (USA release) or £650 plus postage from Europe (European release).

  19. Ravi says:

So I’ve purchased this through Rareware USA via Amazon Espanol and will see what happens. It’s about half the price of Amazon Canada and even if I get dinged a bit on duty it will still be a savings. Of course this strategy is heavily dependent on actually receiving the item.

Interesting enough, Tom Petty’s Volume 2 box set has popped up on Amazon Canada also through Rareware USA.

Wonder if this us also a “warehouse” find?

    • Ryk says:

      Ravi,

Thanks for the head’s up! I ordered Vol 2 from France some time ago, but it was not in stock and the order was eventually cancelled. As long as Rareware doesn’t cancel this order, I’m a happy man.

  20. Nick says:

I’ve heard 1000 have been repressed…. which is a bit Naughty as when the initial 2500 were originally pressed and sold – Reprise Stated that they would never be repressed!
Now 147 Euros on the Spain Amazon site and Looks Like Newtownvideo has bumped the UK price up to £218.00
Luckily I bought one first time round, I’ve ordered a spare from Soundstagedirect.com in the US for $150 plus shipping. But been hearing some horror stories about them taking months to ship anything!

    • StevieB says:

Why is it a bit naughty to repress them…much better to do this if there is latent demand and it means that people who want them can now do so without paying over the odds on E-Bay etc, or worse, just have to go without.

  21. Paul Spurgeon says:

Bit of a risk with 3rd party sellers across the pond though isn’t it re import fees etc?

  22. James says:

Thanks for highlighting this , ordered for £100, never thought I’d find it , many thanks again , fingers crossed it arrives in one piece !!

  23. Eric Weinraub says:

This has been available all week through various sellers.

  24. Chris Squires says:

I have used ratewaves USA to the UK with mixed results. The bad one was a sale through Amazon Spain they had The Fellowship of the Rings Red Vinyl for an equivalent of £100, so I bought one as a back-up. Shipping gave a date, so when it was past that date by a week (three weeks after purchase) I asked where my item was and they instantly refunded me. No further questions. In itself that’s fine, I got my money back but I have my doubts the item was ever posted. I feel they realised they had under-sold the item and sold it elsewhere for much more. I checked and there was no tracking number. All very odd. And the conspiracy theorist in me felt uneasy. So my bargain back-up disappeared.

    • Chomes says:

You are not alone. Rarewaves have done exactly the same thing to me in the past regarding the instant refund after a few weeks of no delivery. Its not all bad though as i have picked up some bargains from them on other occasions, so theres no harm in giving them a go if you are prepared to let them hold on to your cash for a few weeks in a worse case scenario.

      • Klaus says:

To be fair you must say that this doesn’t only happen with rarewaves but with every other bigger marketplace-seller on every amazon-site too. At least that’s my experience so far.

        • Chris Squires says:

That’s a fair point Klaus and I have had some good experiences with RarewavesUSA where I was pleasantly surprised. The reason this one stood out is that it was the first time I had bought from a third party seller that was based overseas.

I guess keeping customers money for as long as possible in your account is a successful “business policy” if you do it to enough customers. As a policy it also relies on every customer being on the ball and realizing up to a month later that something you ordered weeks ago hasn’t turned up. Or else Kerching.

What I do promise myself is that if it happens a second time with them I won’t ever order from rarewaves again and will put an official complaint in to amazon. It is no way to run a business. Here’s hoping for a safe arrival this time… and ultimately they do give you your money back quickly… but you have to ask them for it.

  25. Craig Hedges says:

Let’s hope this warehouse also has copies of the super deluxe box of Tears for fears Songs from the big chair. I kick myself for not getting it at sensible price. Wish Universal would do another batch.

    • Larry Davis says:

When the TFF SFTBC box was first released, it was between $69 and $89, so I held off for prices to drop to around $49…those boxes usually do, and this woman I was friendly with at a NYC store called Discorama was trying to get it in for me and woulda charged me around that price and hook me up…her warehouse never got it in…I inquired, asked around, no luck…finally gave up and went to Amazon and other online retailers…to my shock, the price jumped $100+!! Found out why from Paul…the fact the supply was bought by 85% of the fanbase and Universal were not going to do a 2nd pressing for the other 15% and lose money…understandable but it sucks…will try and find a seller on eBay or Discogs who will accept an offer…will try $100 and free shipping and see what happens…it worked with the brilliant and megarare 4CD Fanny Reprise box with a nice gal seller in the UK…we’ll see with the TFF box…will eventually get the Tom Petty live Best Buy (not Walmart) box…I DO see it around, time to time, for a small fraction of the insane prices I see online now…$1000??
