Heaven 17 Interview: Part 2 with Martyn Ware and Glenn Gregory on the SDE Sofa

Part 2 of the SDE filmed interview with Martyn Ware & Glenn Gregory

Here is the second and final part (part one is here) of the interview as Heaven 17‘s Glenn Gregory and Martyn Ware visit SDE HQ and recline on the sofa to discuss topics such as why they never played live in the early days, dealing with commercial decline and the Virgin years in general…

I’m delighted to announce that this near hour-long interview (parts one and two combined) will be available to order a limited ‘keepsake’ printed edition SDE interview booklet. This follows the success of similar booklets for Paul McCartney, Roxy Music and Pete Burns. It is a limited edition with just 450 numbered copies SIGNED by Martyn Ware and Glenn Gregory and it is available to pre-order now, only via the SDE shop using this link or the button below.

The signed SDE interview booklet will ship on or around 29 March 2019, the same day the Play To Win: The Virgin Years CD and vinyl box box sets are released. There are no signed editions of the Play To Win CD box set left now, incidentally.

34 responses to Heaven 17 Interview: Part 2 with Martyn Ware and Glenn Gregory on the SDE Sofa

  1. Craig Hedges says:

I noticed that the song Chase Runner from the soundtrack of Electric Dreams wasn’t included, was there a reason why this wasn’t included. I was hoping this might have been raised in the interview. I’ve always been curious why the film also uses ‘Crushed BTWOI’ instead of another original song. Were they suppose to produce a second song the film?

With regards to the Electric Dreams soundtrack it’s a shame there wasn’t an expanded version which included the other music film especially the classical pieces. A lot of tracks were issued as singles so there is a plethora of 12″ versions including Helen Terry’s ‘Now you’re mine.

  3. Saad says:

    Superb interviews Paul. Thank you.

  4. SimonP says:

I have a question that should have been asked: on the original 12″ version of Temptation there’s a loud vocal noise at the very beginning that made me crap myself the first time I played it! Why is this edited out on all the re-released stuff?

    • Neil says:

That loud vocal is at the start of Temptation on Endless but yes it does seems to have been edited out on future releases after that. If this box set had been about £50 i would have bought it but £90 is far too expensive considering i have about 90% of stuff on this. I was hoping they would do a deluxe of How Men Are which was supposed to be in the works but it’s highly unlikely to happen now.

      • SimonP says:

I’m with you, Neil. I’d buy this at half the price but would much prefer a CD version of the digitally released How Men Are instead, especially as the full length tracks on that aren’t included here. Martyn is correct when he says it’s their best album.

  5. martin farnworth says:

Interesting to hear about the later years although i’ve no desire to hear Pleasure One again. Feel they regressed and became past their sell by date despite being a huge influence on techno. Was great to see them live last year in Liverpool. Might have been nice to hear the odd track post Luxury Gap but couldn’t have cared less.

  6. Neil O says:

    Great interview, Paul.

Really good questions and answered in a nice, relaxed, open manner by Glenn and Martyn.

  7. Elliot says:

Great interview Paul, would have liked to found out more about what Ian Craig Marsh is up to these days but nice to find out some of the background behind the making of the albums.

  8. Patrick Gleeson says:

Another great interview Paul, thanks. BTW they’re correct, ‘How Men Are’ is Heaven 17’s masterwork – criminally underrated.

  9. Michael says:

Hi Paul I know it’s fairly well documented but did ask about the recordings with Tina Turner? Haven’t yet watched. Thanks

  10. John 79 says:

As soon as I saw that you were making another keepsake booklet ,I was sold ,I bought the Pete Burns keepsake and that was excellent, I’m really looking forward to this one Paul especially as it’s signed by two of my favourite musicians.

  11. Chris says:

Great interview, but burning question – how did the sofa change from blue to white ?

  12. Carl says:

Wish there was more about Ian , they seemed to skip pretty sharpish , considering he was an integral part of the whole thing.

  13. Trash says:

    Lovely!

Particularly interesting hearing their career ‘miss-steps’ – $1000,000 for five gigs…

Booklet ordered – its the first one I have ordered so I don’t really know what to expect but the reports on here from previous customers indicates a high degree os satisfaction so I’m looking forward to receiving mine.

Thanks for this interview Paul (and Martyn and Glenn)

  14. Christopher Merritt says:

    No brainer – instant order.

  15. Ian Murphy says:

These interviews have been great – thanks Paul. Booklet ordered!

  16. Philip Guest says:

Terrific interview, Paul – answered some questions I’ve always wanted to ask them.

    Booklet ordered!

  17. Peter Nicholas says:

Booklet ordered, will go great with the boxset, thanks for your hard work on this Paul, its great to see them interviewed.

  18. Michael E. says:

I’m really looking forward to Your unboxing video :)
I’m glad i have ordered soon enough to get a signed one …..

  19. Tim-Meh says:

They look quite comfy on that sofa. Have they ever been closer?

Maybe they have but I’ve never been. :)
