Hear ‘Twenty Fine Fingers’ demo from McCartney’s Flowers in the Dirt reissue

Paul McCartney / Flowers in the Dirt 2CD Edition

The first unreleased audio has ‘dropped’ (horrible phrase) from Paul McCartney‘s forthcoming Flowers in the Dirt reissue. Listen to the Twenty Fine Fingers demo, below.

The song was written by (and is performed by) Paul and Elvis Costello. It’s one of nine demos that feature on the two-CD special edition and the deluxe edition box set (which includes a further disc of 1988 band demos (as well as the controversial downloads).

Flowers in the Dirt will be reissued on 24 March 2017.

  1. Javier says:

Since, due to the downloads, I’m going to buy the two-CD edition instead of the deluxe box set, Macca and his people are going to lose 122 pounds from me…

  2. Tim says:

Back in the day, I used to breathlessly collect those kind of demos on bootleg vinyl and later outrageously priced CDs. But now that I am 50, I just hear it on YouTube and kind of shrug. Twenty Fine Fingers is meh. I guess it’s me that’s changed. Sorry Paul.

  3. mike says:

Ditto 122 lost macca, why pay more, if you dont care either….

  4. Ben Williams says:

Having known this track for a long time now and hearing it ‘officially’ it doesn’t sound too much better than my bootleg copy…

£134.99; I still can’t get over that price. Is this the most expensive CD box set ever for what audio is actually included on the discs inside the box set? Even £12.99 for the 2-disc version seems too expensive considering the bonus disc is going to have about 30 minutes of music on it. Would much rather have Flying To My Home etc but I have now officially given up on that lost cause. Will stick to my trusty 1993 remaster ;-)

Looking forward to Dylan’s Triplicate, Listen Without Prejudice 25 and Purple Rain deluxe…

  5. Catweazle says:

I bought all the McCartney deluxe box sets so far. FITD isn’t really among my favourite Macca albums, and this demo doesn’t make it any better. So considering the disappointing physical content and the totally exaggerated price I have finally decided not to buy this. Now bring on Back to the Egg and Flaming Pie!

  6. Steve says:

I will not be buying this ‘Flowers In The Dirt’ reissue in any form due the complete disrespect paid to fans from the Paul and his Manager over the 4th CD only being available a download for the box set.

  7. Derby says:

Amazon now seems to have a disc 5 listed for the deluxe edition. It has all of the download only tracks listed on it. Is it possible they the powers that be added a 5th disc or does this disc 5 refer to the download content?

  8. Gary Grizzle says:

Have been collecting Paul’s physical product for forty-two years – the first 2 albums taken home on my bicycle. Times have changed. No bicycle, but I still like physical product. Have seen Paul live 7 times. Definitely disappointed at the download decision. Have three FITD versions already.

  9. Daniel ( from Berlin ) says:

Maybe i’m a little bit sleepy this morning, but where are the Deluxe Editions
of “Give My Regards To Broad Street” and “Press To Play” ?
Forgotton or not good enough in Paul McCartney’s opinion ?
    Or any other reason ?

    • Paul Sinclair says:

He’s not doing them in any kind of order, so the assumption is that he’s concentrating on ones that he likes, or were very successful or have some kind of ‘narrative’ that works in terms of PR.

    • Stan Butler says:

Would love to see these two released but I can’t see it, now. McCartney seems to have little interest in remixes and both these albums had many. Wouldn’t surprise me if Flowers in The Dirt was the last Super Deluxe.

  10. Damon Parsons says:

I’m looking forward to getting the deluxe edition, even with the disappointment of some download only content. Always loved the Paul & Elvis demos I had heard so far so it’ll be great to get them in higher quality.

  11. Nick says:

Wish Sir Paul would have released these chronologically. That way, we’d have had Wild Life RRS, London Town and possibly Back to the Egg and I could be done with this series. Nothing after BTTE was that interesting to me – Im also in my 50s – that Id pay these prices. *sigh

  12. DaveM says:

There are comments elsewhere from those who have heard the demos that suggest this is the least impressive track. I hope so cause I am left underwhelmed. Could they have done anymore to damage sales of any edition? Still hoping for a deal alert for the deluxe in early April and I will be in though. Really enjoying my newly aquired Japanese 2 CD version for now.

  13. DavidLG1971 says:

For me this is the last remaining major album of Macca’s that hasn’t been remastered. It’s also in my top 5 of his solo albums. (I too am disappointed with the download situation and pricepoint, though.)

Still, I’m really, really happy this great album is finally getting the attention it deserves. It was the beginning of McCartney reclaiming his iconic status, after so much talk throughout the 80s about his missteps and how far he’d fallen off. FITD proved there was still gas in the tank, and rejuvenated his career.

I suspect that for a lot of people, this was their first McCartney studio album purchased on CD, since the CD market didn’t really take off until the mid-80s, and Press to Play didn’t sell very well. (My first McCartney CDs was All The Best, followed by Flowers in the Dirt and Tripping the Live Fantastic.)

  14. David Rubin says:

    Paul,
It seems to me that this download is a way of Paul saying give them something and they will be happy. But by the comments left here, it seems to be lost on people already having it as bootlegs and still not being happy with the idea of an archive set including download songs. I will wait till I find it in the cut out bin.
This is disgraceful of Paul to do this to his hard core fan base.
It is shameful and sad after how we have treated him.

  15. Andrea says:

I’m with the majority heare, I’ll probably buy the 2CD version, and “download only” everything else. Sorry Mac.

  16. Mark Novak says:

To me, the whole point of releasing physical product is to have ALL the stuff as physical product, For those of us who are not so keen on downloads, this becomes a deal breaker. Perhaps they will monitor sales and if they find that the amount sold is not up to expectation they will change their approach.

  17. DavidLG1971 says:

I’d like to see the single versions, mixes and period-relevant music included as well. (I mean, where is the – admittedly poor – single remake of Figure Of Eight?)

But this simply isn’t Paul dissing his fans or any other such thing. They won’t include everything. They know that the largest share of fans typically want the album, some extras (such as demos, videos, documentaries) and that’s…enough.

The hardcores that want everything included, such as probably everyone on this site? Not really representative, or likely impactful, in terms of sales gained/lost. I agree it’s a *shame* for them not to include everything in physical format. But they are including most all of it, in some form or another.

Just…a realistic perspective / food for thought thing.

  18. alan hansen says:

not to be contrary, but although i value Elvis Costello’s work, i DON’T believe it’s the creme-de-la-creme from the FITD sessions (circa). i’d prefer a separate release for the McCartney/McManus, and then add that (disc of?) controversial and aforementioned material.

and yes, i do realize that this is all for naught at this point.

  19. Robert says:

The SDE of “Flowers In The Dirt” is to expensive if you compare this one with the previous SDE’s of his albums. I am not very happy about the digital downloads, they should have been included in this SDE.

I have a question about the digital download. Do you have to buy them seperately or are they for free if you buy the SDE of “Flowers In The Dirt” ?

I know this one is off-topic … but I hope that the next one will be “Tripping The Live Fantastic”.

    • Paul Sinclair says:

The 16-tracks via digital download are ‘free’ if you spent £135 on the deluxe edition of Flowers in the Dirt!

  20. Robert says:

Thanks for your reply, Paul ! But that’s a lot of money … I have to think about this. Maybe I will wait untill this price goes down.

    • Paul Sinclair says:

That’s generally the view of most if you read through some of the previous posts on the topic. Far too expensive.

  21. Robert says:

I have seen previous posts on the topic. And I don’t know what I am going to do, go for the SDE or for the 2cd Edition. Do you know what the prize is of the 16-tracks digital download ?

Paul McCartney’s “Flowers In The Dirt” was the first studio-album that I bought. So I would be intrested in a remastered version.

    • Paul Sinclair says:

You cannot buy the 16-tracks on their own. You HAVE to buy the physical box to get them.

      • Stan Butler says:

Paul, do you know what quality the download tracks will be?
The quality of the previous free downloads from McCartney’s website have been less than impressive.

  22. Robert says:

Thanks for information. I assumed that you could buy the 16-tracks also seperately.

  23. Michael Wiley says:

The current pre-0rder price for the deluxe box through Amazon Canada is just under $180 CDN. To give you an idea of its equivalence throughout the world, that’s almost 5 tanks of gas in a mid-size Canadian car. For 3 CDs, a DVD, and a bunch-a downloads. Yeah, um, no.
