12-inch Dance: Indie / 3CD remix set

Two new three-CD remix collections will hit the market next month, courtesy of Rhino, and the one called 12-Inch Dance: Indie really caught our eye.

The 30-track compilation features tracks from the last 30 years including contributions from New Order, Happy Mondays, Jesus Jones, Mansun, Dubstar, Radiohead, Air, Coldplay, Kylie and Bat For Lashes.

There does appear to be some genuine rarities here, including Ian Levine’s remix of the Pet Shop BoysPaninaro which was the B-side to an Italy-only single in 1986.

As usual, these sets are fantastic value, with the UK price just under £7 at the time of writing. A companion 12-Inch Dance: 70s Grooves  set will be released at the same time.

Both are out on 13 April 2015.

  1. Chris Brown says:

Is there really a 12″ mix of ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ or are they just throwing that on by default?

  2. Derek Murray says:

There is no 12″ mix of LWTUA. There’s a couple of different mixes but no extended mix. It wouldn’t be right though. Sacrilege in fact

  3. Stefano says:

That Coldplay Royksopp remix is a rare one on CD, only released on a US Capitol promo sampler CD, as far as I know. And it’s a terrific remix. Nice it’s being made available to a wider public. Royksopp did also made an excellent remix of Lady Gaga’s Judas, totally changing the track into a Royksopp song, very clever!

    • Fady says:

Clocks remix by Royksopp was definitely released on 12″ vinyl. Good compilation, and being a vinyl junkie would love if it was released on this format. Of course that would probably price it well out of my spending range! :-)

    • Jon says:

I didnt know about that Judas remix. Thanks! :)
Its incredible how Røyksopp can make brilliant music from all kinds of crap :)

  4. Adam says:

I own most of the ones I’d want already, but it might be worth it just to get the Royksopp remix of Coldplay’s “Clocks” on CD. It’s a great mix, and I have it on vinyl, but for £7, the price is definitely right.

  5. Derek Murray says:

Factory only released the Joy Division singles (Transmission, LWTUA, and Atmosphere) for better sound quality rather than doing any special mixes. There’s no real differences between the 7″ and the 12″ mixes bar the sleeves.

  6. Pablo says:

Hmmm..about that Pet Shop Boys rarity, I´ll hold my breath until hear that the mix included is the actual Ian levine remix and not another common case of mislabeling…I hope not!!!

  7. Jeremy says:

Point of order on the PSB mix, the Paninaro track was originally B-Side to Suburbia, but shortly after it was released EMI Italy saw fit to release a remix 12″, featuring two exclusive remixes, one by Ian Levine and one by David Jacob and PSB (The Italian Remix), although nominally on the B-Side it was always considered AA.

  8. Paul says:

I’m with Pablo with this re the Ian Levine Paninaro remix. It would be great if it is that mix to have it hopefully digitally mastered and not a vinyl rip. Fingers crossed.

  9. Harry says:

looks to be a good listing – pity the True Faith mix isn’t the dub from the original 1987 12″ Factory release, those 1994 versions weren’t up to much.
As mentioned already, the Clocks remix is worth having and thus far hard to get…

    • Glenn says:

Was sad when the New Order Brotherhood 2 CD reissue listed the original True Faith Dub and wasn’t it…

  10. Don says:

I’m guessing the Joy Division track will either be the “Radio Version” (3:40) by Don Gehman or, more likely, the “Arthur Baker Remix” (4:22). Both are available on this Canadian CD single. I think it’s the only CD version of the Baker remix:

  11. Cal says:

Well we know the Pet Shop Boys will be revisiting their back cat this year and releasing something, so hopefully Paninaro (Ian Levine Remix) is the first of many.

  12. Iain McCarthy says:

Anyone know if the Perfecto Mix of U2’s ‘Lemon’ has ever been released on CD?

  13. Michael says:

to give this discussion another direction: which PSB mixes should be included in a possible anniversary release of “please”? top of my list would be, of course, mixes which have not yet appeared on CD or are very hard to find. also, demos would be nice, also unreleased stuff.

  14. JohnO says:

Perfecto Mix of U2′s ‘Lemon was only released on CD in Australia, back in 1993.

  15. Michael says:

@Iain McCarthy: the perfecto mix of ‘lemon’ was released on CD many times, for example on the super deluxe edition of the anniversary release of ‘achtung baby’ or on the ‘melon’ compilation. also, many various artists compilations include this mix.

  16. Pablo says:

Of course Michael yor words are true! Not on CD versions and demos are on the top of the wishlist for a ‘Please’ Re-issue!!. If the version here is the real Ian levine Remix, for sure it’ll be included on a re-release of this kind too…we´ll have them twice then! :P There are MANY still vinyl only mixes from that era, they´ll have to include MANY CDs if they intend to make it complete!

  17. Hub Hamers says:

Found this on youtube: 300 Limited Edition Red Vinyl. Alternate versions mastered from the Martin Hannetts tapes in 1980. Released 2009.

The rare/unreleased psb mixes continue to drip out!

  19. Billy Dojcak says:

Hardly any Indie at all. I considered Parlophone an imprint of a major label. I’ll opt for the 70s Grooves version instead.

  20. JrB says:

Couple of points here, the price of the CDs on Amazon has come down by a pound, and is currently sitting at £5.99 on Amazon UK – huge bargain now.

Also, Lemon (Perfecto Mix) was released on the “Pret-A-Porter” mini OST CD and also on CD of Now Dance ’94, so not that rare really. It really is excellent though, and was one of the reasons for me buying the Pret-A-Porter disc.

  23. James Giraffe says:

If you buy it from Amazon, you get Autorip, which contains a bonus continuous mix of the whole album.

    • Paul Sinclair says:

Yes that’s really interesting. It’s actually a 93 minute minute Indie “continuous mix” so it can’t be everything, but the tracks are in a different order, so the first three are True Faith, Getting Away With It and Paninaro…. great little bonus!

  24. James Giraffe says:

I’d not listened to it yet, Paul, so I didn’t realise. Thanks for the info!

  25. James Giraffe says:

I’ve noticed an error on this, otherwise wonderful, compilation. The Way Out West mix of Dubstar’s “Not So Manic Now” has been taken from the bonus CD of the reissue of their debut album, Disgraceful, instead of from an original source (e.g. the CD single or 12″ single). That bonus CD was a remix CD, with all the remixes sequenced into a continuous mix, with various interludes. As such, the Way Out West mix on this compilation actually then continues into a slowed down remix of Elevator Song, and then cuts off abruptly. Admittedly, I’ve not listened to the actual CD (I’ve listened to the Amazon Autorip), but I assume it’s the same on the CD. It’s still a really great compilation though.
