Adam and the Ants / Kings of the Wild Frontier super deluxe edition

aa_sde

Sony Music/Legacy Recordings will issue a lavish four-disc super deluxe edition box set of Adam and the Ants‘ classic 1980 album, Kings Of The Wild Frontier, in May.

Packaged in a large format high-gloss gold box this super deluxe set has been “curated and remastered” by Adam Ant and contains two CDs of audio including the original album, B-sides, previously unreleased studio demos/rough cuts and rare and unissued live recordings. A DVD (NTSC, all regions) delivers promo videos, BBC TV appearances, Adam & The Ants Live In Tokyo 1981 (in its entirety) and a short promotional video ‘Ant Invasion’ – a mini documentary of the first Adam & The Ants US tour in 1981.

Exclusive to the super deluxe edition box is a 180g gold vinyl LP of the newly remastered Kings of the Wild Frontier.

As well as the above audio, the box set contains an enormous amount of additional content in the form of facsimile memorabilia such as replica original release Ant Catalogue, ‘antwarrior’ membership card, prints, posters, photos, press ads, ‘antclub’ membership forms and a 36-page perfect-bound 12″x12″ ‘The Story of the Album’ booklet, including detailed liner notes and track annotations written by Adam Ant.

A two-CD deluxe will also be available (repeating the content from the CDs in the box set) as well as black vinyl LP edition (which includes the replica Ant Catalogue).

Kings of the Wild Frontier is reissued on 20 May 2016.

  1. Mike the Fish says:

This looks interesting. I wonder which version of Ant Music they’ll use. For those who don’t know, the first cut of the album had a different version to the single, but was replaced with the standard version. (Not to mention the different/longer version that appeared on Now Smash Hits!)

    • Paul Sinclair says:

The one on this is 3.36.

    • Steve says:

Is the original Lp version that you mention the version called the Alternative Mix on the 2004 Remaster cd?

    • David Moore says:

Good knowledge thanks for this little tip. KOWF was the very first music I ever bought on a nasty cassette which I still have – I have now ordered the SD box. Adam furnished me with a love for the front man, music as a gang culture, music with energy. I’ve collected music ever since but I have to say nothing sounds like KOWF.

  2. Martyn Alner says:

I see the Box has come down since yesterday’s eye-watering £115! Hoping the price comes down a bit more.

BTW have you seen the Vinyl re-releases of 808 State’s 90 and Ex-el coming soon?

  3. DJ Control says:

A New Royal Family A Wild Nobility We Are The Family…ordered!

  4. Gordon says:

Once again, if you want the DVD you have to get the whole damn package. Will they ever learn…..

  5. Rare Glam says:

Thanks for the info Paul. I’m down for the super deluxe, been watching this on Amazon but it only ever listed the old basic CD track list and then put the release date back a month! Looks like a nice box. I was in a local band that played support to Adam & The Ants at the Brighton Centre in November 1982 as their tour support band had broken down on the motorway. The Ants management put out a call through the local Brighton Evening Argus paper music editor for a band to fill the slot at short notice, so whe rang us and we did it. It was rather strange to be playing to 4000 people in a giant auditorium (as it seemed to us) when the previous night we’d been playing to a couple of dozen in a little local club! It was I believe Adam’s birthday and there was loads of food and drink laid on. Apperently, after the gig Adam was in a bad mood (the gig went fine, but we never got near anyone from the band, let alone Adam) and he didn’t bother with it. So we got all the rider scoff and drink! That’s the nearest I ever came to a taste of the high life!!

BTW – wasn’t their talk of the ‘Dirk Wears White Socks’ album being reissued on vinyl with a bonus LP. Didn’t SDL report the label were looking for suggestions from fans as to what to include as bonus tracks? Did nothing ever comne of that?

Anyway, looking forward to this package. How about re-issuing the 2004 digipak box set of all the A&TA and Adam Ant solo albums?

    • Paul Sinclair says:

Dirk did come out on white vinyl for RSD a few years back… I think Sony abandoned their reissue (good memory about them asking) and Adam licensed it himself.

    • Andrew Mogford says:

That was my first taste of the atmosphere of a big music gig (Brighton Centre). I was 12 and staying with my grandparents just round the corner. I remember looking out the window and seeing all these exotic people with stripes on their noses queuing up outside and how exciting it seemed,

Whatever happened to The Brighton Centre….

  6. Jon says:

Was the LP mastered from tape or digital files?

  7. Auntie Sabrina says:

Yes, Mike the Fish, the original Antmusic faded in?

  8. Gordon says:

This looks great. Got to get those membership application forms, although if the membership cards are included do I still need to apply? I’m surprised the ‘antclub’ is still going to be fair.

I own a CD and DVD player so the playback is no problem but I will have to buy a turntable so I can play the vinyl, even though it replicates the CD album tracks. Only £80 though so count me in. Will have to figure in the turntable cost however so it’s going to set me back a bit.

On second thoughts though the bonus material will likely be one play only fodder and I don’t know if a 57 year old will be welcome in the fan club now and my surly wife will probably moan at the posters going up in the lounge and there are Adam Ant photos and information available for free on the internet and somebody will probably do an unboxing on Youtube too so I will get to see the contents gratis and vinyl does sound crap and is a pain in the backside to store and play compared to lossless digital music. Might have to rethink this.

Yes, £80 is definitely taking the pi*s and streaming or the 2xCD edition seems more financially prudent and will protect my marriage.

  9. Carty says:

The original vinyl of this LP featured an earlier version of ‘Antmusic’ than what appeared on later copies. It featured a chanting fade-in. A mono version appeared on the 2004 remastered CD, but the original stereo mix remains unreleased on CD….as does the 7″ edit of ‘Antmusic’.

Glad to see the b-sides added at last…although I feel “Fat Fun” would have completed the set, as it was from those same recording sessions, even if it is, technically, the last ever new recording released by Adam & The Ants (on AntBox).

  10. Carty says:

(I should read the other comments before doing so myself, hehe.)

  11. gb says:

looks really good. wonder why ‘Kings of the Wild Frontier’ on TOTP wasn’t included? … unless just ran out of space

  12. KK says:

The tracklist from the Adam & The Ants Live In Tokyo 1981 DVD contains 14 songs. The old VHS tape contains 15 songs and starts with Stand and Deliver wich one is missing on the DVD. So how can it be “in its entirety”?

  13. Jeff Rougvie says:

All links going to vinyl-only issue?

  14. JuzzyB says:

Wonder why they didn’t include all of the demos from the last reissue… yet another noncomprehensive set. Anyway, I’m not being milked by buying this old thing again. I’ll save my money for an album that hasn’t been reissued already. Time to move on.

  15. Graeme Piper says:

This looks great! First LP (well, cassette) I ever bought. Just pre-ordered the Super Deluxe box. Can’t wait!!

  16. Chris says:

Why can’t we ever have a super deluxe box that doesn’t have the price blown out of reach by the over-inflated (and in my case totally unwanted) vinyl in there ?
So many of these box sets could be 30 quid cheaper without the vinyl, and I know I’d be that much more interested !

  17. Paul English says:

The 7″ of Antmusic is MIA once again. A missed opportunity

  18. Steve says:

Oooo. As an antperson for life, I’ll be getting this. Please keep us updated if you get more details/info/pictures!

  19. Simon F says:

Spent years searching for an original vinyl copy of this bugger complete with the Ant Catalogue. Finally got a mint condition one from a charity shop about three years ago. Great album, and only recently I read an interview with Mr. Ant about this reissue and it sounded like a really great package, so count me in for the SDL version. Good price as well for all that lot!

  20. claudio says:

oh, not again and again… why vinyls??? I do no t want vinyls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. Simon F says:

Slight deal alert – £74.99 at HMV with free postage in UK.

  22. Mat F says:

If you don’t want the vinyl, simply buy the box set and give the vinyl to someone that appreciates the better quality.

Do I now get to moan about wanting the gold LP but have to get the crappy CD’s that I don’t want?

    • gwynogue says:

quote: “If you don’t want the vinyl, simply buy the box set and give the vinyl to someone that appreciates the better quality.”

Yeah sure, ‘simply’ spend £80 just for 2CDs and a DVD.

quote: “Do I now get to moan about wanting the gold LP but have to get the crappy CD’s that I don’t want?”

      Yes.

  23. John says:

What will this cost in American dollars?

    • Paul Sinclair says:

Feel free to click on the link in the post to find out :) But the answer is $120

    • John says:

$105.34 USD from Amazon UK (incl. shipping to the USA). I cancelled my Amazon US preorder which was $130.64 USD (incl. Amazon Prime free shipping) saving $25.30 USD.

  24. Jeff Rougvie says:

If you are in USA and can wait a few weeks after release, price will drop on Amazon from third party suppliers.

    • John says:

I already own the original CBS CD of Kings, the 1998 reissue, Antbox, B-Side Babiez & the Embryo/Tiki Gods bootleg, which seems to be what the concert disc is. Therefor, I own most of this music. The price has to come down substantially to justify spending this much.

  25. Paul says:

Looking forward to seeing the Box contents (Hopefully before release).

  26. John says:

    Lucky me!
Received a 20% discount code from jpc.de (already lowest pre-order price) today so I’ve ordered 2 copies of the Super Deluxe edition.

  27. David, UK says:

Wish there was a hi-res issue of this most enjoyable album. Maybe it’ll come out through HDTracks or similar, but I’m sure that would be several years away.

On the plus side, seeing that Adam himself co-remastered this, I’m hopeful that it doesn’t succumb to the Loudness Wars. We’ll soon find out.

  28. Chris Hanington says:

Hello Paul. Quick question. Do you know for sure if the North American release will have the DVD in a NTSC format? I ask because Amazon.com has this listed as a European release. For Amazon.ca, there is no mention of that. Also, I pre ordered this box set from http://www.importcds.com/ for $83US which is the best price I have seen. The price is now $98 US but this is a great place to purchase anything if you are in North America. Very reasonable shipping and usually cheaper than Amazom.ca even with the conversion to Canadian dollars.
    Thanks.
    Chris

  29. Anthony Flanagan says:

Hi All,this deluxe box set can be ordered on what records for £59.99…A bit cheaper than Amazon.

  30. Ray judson says:

    Thanks for the info Paul!
