Altered Images / The Epic Years box

All the albums • Bonus tracks • Additional CD with 12-inch mixes

Cherry Red will in February issue The Epic Years, a new four-CD box set that brings together “pretty much all” of Altered Images‘ releases on Epic Records.

The Scottish band were fronted by Clare Grogan and are best known for their UK number two hit Happy Birthday (the title track of their debut) The first three CDs in this 60-track box set deliver the band’s three albums Happy Birthday (1981), Pinky Blue (1982) and Bite (1983) but crucially, each CD also includes bonus tracks such as B-sides, seven-inch single mixes, versions exclusive to cassette singles and more.

The fourth and final CD in this set is dubbed The 12″ Album and collects all the various dance mixes issued at the time.

The Epic Years is a clamshell box set and the booklet included features notes from Daryl Easlea. It will be released on 23 February 2018.

  1. Mike Martin says:

The BBC Peel session was arguably the best thing they ever recorded. I remember Peel kept forgetting to play the songs individually that night, so in the end he played all four songs back to back, brilliant for us hovering over the record button of a cassette recorder. Such a shame it’s not on this set, not really sure what the point of this is as all the recordings seem to have been available before. Still, great excuse to get the lovely Clare Grogan on BBC 6 Music and have a great chat.

  2. J S Allan says:

Had a sneaky first listen to the 12″ Bonus Disc and can confirm that the 12″ mix of ‘Don’t Talk To Me About Love’ is presented in its full 8 1/2 minute glory. Bliss!

  3. Keir Hardie says:

Shame about the Peel sessions, especially the two with Caesar. Still, I guess someone else can license them and put them out. The inclusion of tracks like the version of Leave Me Alone from the Dead Pop Stars cassingle shows they’ve been fairly thorough however.

  4. -SG- says:

It would be very helpful if someone in the know could answer some of the above questions: are these the new 2017 remasters or is this the same old chud from before? Similarly, why not run track listings through us here first. That Love to Stay dance mix looks like an error, unless it is previously unreleased. And leaving off the US album mix of See Those Eyes, seems like a big oversight, looks petty, but glaring oversights are a symptom of a lack of attention to detail, and defeats the purpose of such archival releases. Honestly, is it really that difficult? Why even do this for a living if you don’t care.

    • Chris Squires says:

You are right SG, many serious “fans” know more about an artist’s back catalogue and what was made than many artists do. I am not exactly sure how sad it is that many of us here could tell an artist what he was doing, or where he was performing on the 4th August 1988 and so on. Also why the “Inversion” is different to the “Diversion” and which should be on any disc.
Maybe Paul, or others here who have worked in the industry, will know why so few artists get a “fan” compiler in. Is it because the labels just don’t care enough or are we just too geeky and annoying? We seek perfection (every thread here has predictable comments about what is missing) but do labels just seek margin?

  5. Mylene says:

Little Town Flirt (from the Party Party soundtrack) is once again missing. Any Altered Images fan could have made a better box set than this one.

    • Scott says:

Little Town Flirt is a great cover, and would fit well on Pinky Blue. But it is owned by Universal, not Sony like everything else, and cross-licensing is a pain. Heck, even regular licensing is a long, drawn out pain so I can understand not wanting to make it worse by involving another major label, especially for one song. That being said, I would have been happy to see it included as well.

  6. Neil says:

Cherry Red are getting worse with their releases just take that Big Country box set that was released recently as an example which was a total disgrace. I would like to be proved wrong but my gut feeling is that they will use those existing Edsel masters as their source and i suppose the proof will be in the pudding as they say when we find out if the full Don’t Talk to Me About Love mix is used.

  7. eoin hall says:

Also missing is the U.S. extended version of Don’t Talk To Me About Love.

    • Will_2 says:

Never heard that mix before. Just had a listen on youtube.
That appears to be just the album version of Don’t Talk To Me About Love and someone has spliced another extra minute on the end – if you listen at 4:51, you can hear where they have added it in.

As someone said above, it would be good if we finally got the full UK extended mix of this track. Normally, we seem to get the cut down 7 min version.

  8. Matthew Holbro0k says:

Thanks for the comments here. I hadn’t realised that all three albums had come out as doubles. I only had the first album in that format from RSD2017. I also hadn’t realised about the 25% offer. That will teach me to ignore Vinyl180 emails :)

  9. Benjamin Adams says:

Auto pre-order from Amazon at that price. If I hear anything bad about the sourcing, I can always cancel.

  10. Larry Davis says:

Well…I am late to the Altered Images catalogue, as I worked my way backwards from Texas and Hipsway…had always dug “Happy Birthday” the song and a coupla others I had heard… Then a few months ago, I acquired the 2CD Music Club Deluxe collection “Happy Birthday: The Best Of” cheap used and I dug it…pretty cool and unexpected Neil Diamond cover of “Song Sung Blue” I didn’t know about either… Saw this set and preordered…it will replace that double…nice.

  11. Aaron says:

Anyone know what “pretty much all” means? i.e…what is missing?

Will still pick it up…at that price its a no-brainer!

She was also the best Kochanski!

    • daveid76 says:

Greetings fellow smeg head. Both actresses are gorgeous in their own way but CG will always be the one. She turns my blue midget into a red giant.

  12. Scott says:

Yes, the Love to Stay 12″ is the same as the LP version, so it may just be a repeated track. The one track missing (which is on the recent double LP edition of Pinky Blue) is the U.S. See Those Eyes extended mix, which was exclusive to the U.S. LP back in 1982.

  13. Straker says:

I wouldn’t put it past Cherry Red/Pop to actually master the cassette versions from an old cassette!! Very much a case of wait-and-see rather than pre-order and risk another disaster. I’ve personally bought too many of their discs on trust and cursed myself for it so now I always wait for reviews even if it means losing out on a better pre-order price.

Anyone unaware of their rep. need only browse the reviews of a few of their recent (or older) releases.

  14. Will_2 says:

Another one I’m really interested in but need more details first.
The previous 2004 Edsel re-issues had loads of mistakes – wrong versions \ cuts used, vinyl rips etc.

  15. Scott says:

Also, rumor has it that a new compilation is going to be coming out fairly soon that will also include a DVD of their music videos. This will be a U.S. release, not on Cherry Red. In addition, Cherry Red did confirm the BBC sessions are not included in this set because they are too costly to license.

    • Dennis says:

Well, that would be great. Sadly in recent years, the + DVD Option seems to have been off the table for many labels.
Shame about the BBC sessions, but not totally unexpected. Makes you wonder, why Caroline is able to license those sessions for their The Skids boxset or the recent China Crisis remasters.

  16. Johnny says:

Love Altered Images but so disappointed that there’s nothing unreleased, no demos or Peel Sessions. Guess that’ll never happen now…

  17. Neil McL says:

    Ordered!

  18. Foxee says:

    Brilliant news!!

Let’s just hope the 12′ version of Don’t Talk to Me… here is the actual full length 8 1/2 minute version, as opposed to the edited version which has always appeared elsewhere!!

Shame this is not being released on vinyl…..

    • Scott says:

The band’s entire back catalog was released on vinyl last year, each LP came in two different configurations. Each as a single LP with a colored vinyl 7″ with additional tracks, then as double LP’s with a bunch of period extras. All are still available from Vinyl 180, and in fact you can get the double editions right now for 25% off until the last day of the year from the Vinyl 180 website.

There have been some inquiries to Cherry Red if this new box set is remastered from original tapes but I’ve not seen any reply yet. We might have to wait and see if they are better quality than the terrible iTunes editions that includes some very bad vinyl transfers, or the earlier CD’s that used incorrect and edited versions.

      • Chris Squires says:

Thank Scott, got the Altered Images 2LP sets and a few other bits and bobs from the vinyl180 site. Including a very nice Lotus Eaters set which I didn’t even know about.
Lovely stuff and a bad way to end the year……2018 will be different!

    • Martin says:

Not sure how many more vinyl releases they can make of these three albums to be fair. They have released each twice in the last year! Once with the additional 7” and once with an additional 12” set so once more would truly be a case of ‘Killing the goose….’ however at that price for the CD’s I’m in as always an AI fan

    • Mike the Fish says:

Yes, re: Don’t Talk To Me, although the album version is my favourite. Isn’t the 12″ of Love to Stay the same as the album version? Any word on sourcing what with it being Cherry Red and their, err, record for unsatisfactory vinyl rips?

  19. pinkfloyd says:

    i’m in! 1st reissue highlight of 2018?

  20. Dennis says:

Wish they would include the excellent Peel Sessions… I know technically these were not recorded for Epic but that would have been a selling point.
Any word on whether these are newly remastered or if they use the Demon 2004 remasters?

  21. John says:

Will the CDs be in simple card sleeves?
