Atomic Rooster / Live at the BBC plus

Repertoire Records will soon issue Live at the BBC plus, a new three disc box set featuring live BBC recordings of English prog rock band Atomic Rooster.

The 2CD+DVD set pairs a CD of Live in London 1972 (from a BBC Radio 1 In Concert show) with The Lost Broadcasts  – audio and video from German TV’s Beat Club (on CD and region-free DVD).

The booklet with this set includes notes by by Repertoire’s Chris Welch with contributions from Chris Farlowe recalling his days in Atomic Rooster.

Live at the BBC plus will be released on 16 March 2018.

One response to Atomic Rooster / Live at the BBC plus

  1. Colin Harper says:

A curious collection. I had the great pleasure of compiling and annotating the deluxe edition Sanctuary reissues of the Rooster catalogue (plus a Rooster 2CD comp and a Vince Crane 2CVD comp of band tracks and solo/session rarities) in the early 2000s, and the BBC Paris Theatre show is a fantastic 30 minute set – probably the best single representation of the Chris Farlowe-era line-up, but out before in at least three CD incarnations.

I would have thought it would be a terrific candidate for a well-mastered vinyl edition – but a 30 minute CD plus what I imagine is 45-50 minutes of Beat Club audio (which includes either 2 or 3 tracks from the musically very different pre-Farlowe era of John Cann as singer/guitarist) on another CD seems odd – in terms of both timing and content. All/most could have been fitted on one CD, and the idea of multiple takes of two songs from one session on set like this seems inappropriate. But…

If Repertoire are going to the trouble of getting both BBC and Studio Hamburg licenses in place, why not create a set that is either more sensible (e.g. just the Farlowe era) or more comprehensive (e.g. bringing in the two extant Rooster TOTP performances – with the John Cann line-up – on the DVD, and/or bringing in the rest of the Chris Farlowe BBC radio sessions). My understanding of how licensing works is that 20 BBC tracks aren’t going to cost much more than 10, to put it simply.

    Weird.
