Bob Marley / Exodus 40: The Movement Continues – box set and deluxe editions

Universal will mark the 40th anniversary of Bob Marley and the WailersExodus with a comprehensive reissue across three physical formats, including a six-vinyl super deluxe edition.

A core offering across all formats is a disc dubbed ‘The Movement Continues’. Ziggy Marley has revisited the original session recordings, uncovering unused and never-before-heard vocals and instrumentation, and has transforming these various elements into brand-new session takes. This effectively creates a new alternative version of Exodus. This is available on the two-CD, three-CD and the vinyl super deluxe.

Those latter two editions (three-CD and vinyl) also feature Exodus Live a live set recorded at London’s Rainbow Theatre the week of the album’s release on June 3, 1977. Seven of these tracks are previously unreleased.

The super deluxe edition is vinyl-only and includes the album, The Movement Continues, the live set and a fourth 12-inch vinyl, Punky Reggae Party, which includes a previously unreleased extended mix of Keep On Moving. This set also comes with a pair of seven-inch singles– Waiting in Vain b/w Roots and Smile Jamaica (Part One) b/w Smile Jamaica (Part Two). This looks to come with a 12×12-inch booklet and outer slip case.

Exodus 40 will be released on 30 June 2017.

  1. adam shaw says:

Nice set but not going to buy it , I’ve got my fill of Exodus .
All this remixing that makes another version of a record could go on forever !
And there’s a track missing on the live vinyl that’s on the cd ? Again , how many live versions are there left to uncover ?

  2. Ross says:

How different is this from the last 2-disc deluxe edition?

  3. Ciaran Beattie says:

Where is “Roots”, “Punky Reggae Party” “Exodus Instrumental” and the single Mixes of “Exodus”, “Waiting in Vain” and “Jammin'” on the CD versions?
Also doesn’t “Smile Jamaica” belong with “Rastaman Vibration”?
I know it was a bonus on the Deluxe version of that album.
To my knowledge the single wasn’t released in this country.
I will be buying the 3cd version but as with everything released via the Marley family it’s a missed opportunity to issue a complete set.
And last but not least where is the 2cd version of the Live 3LP set released last Christmas.

    • Paul E. says:

@Ciaran…also wishing for the “Live” 2 CD Deluxe Edition! I’m growing impatient and may just purchase the 22 track version on HDtracks but the physical CD format is preferred. As far as “Exodus” goes, I own the Mobile Fidelity Gold Disc and 2 CD Deluxe so I’ll wait for Mr. Sinclair’s deal alert on this one.

  4. Lee says:

I was excited by this, given that I still don’t have the now hard to find 2CD deluxe from way back.

However, *none* of the material from the previous bonus disc is included here. It could have been, and probably *should* have been.

  5. Tom M says:

There is a 12″ gold vinyl available also, but maybe just from the Bob Marley shop.

  6. Pablo says:

I agree with Ciaran Beattie… there are missing tracks… too bad

  7. David says:

I hope that the John Mendelsohn single remix of “Waiting In Vain” but i doubt since that was released in 1984, Does anyone know if that 1984 JM single mix is available on any CD or compilation?

  8. Ciaran Beattie says:

The 12″ JM remix version of Waiting in Vain” is on the second disc of the “Legend” deluxe Edition.
I don’t think the 7″ version is on CD.

  9. johnny says:

That Julian Mendelsohn single remix is on the 2CD of Legend that was released in 2002.

Rest in peace Bob! Your sounds will always tune up our lives!

  11. El Nino says:

I and I will be buying the 3 CD version.

Gold vinyl is here, £18.99 plus postage, says it is out on 2 June but that might’ve changed

  13. andrew r says:

after the debacle of the ltd box set that then popped up everywhere at half price
i am out of the building where mr marleys back catalogue is concerned

  14. Don says:

The previous 2CD deluxe is definitely the one to get if you want all of the archival extended versions and b-sides. It’s essential.

The real selling point of this one is the “new” version of the album by Ziggy Marley. An article in Rolling Stone indicates that he brought in musicians to re-record much of the backing music and also enlisted “special guests” like… Beenie Man! Um, no thanks. I’ll stick with the previous deluxe.

  15. oneworld says:

As much as I love Bob Marley’s music, I will NOT be getting this one. Great album that Exodus surely is I don’t think this set improves at all on previous releases. Since 2001 with ALL the new Remasters we have had: A Single CD Remaster with 2 Bonus Tracks, A 2CD Deluxe Edition, (which is the Best Version to have ) and a 30th Anniversary Ltd Edition which contains the Standard Ten track CD + DVD Live At The Rainbow which came in a very nice hardback book. Also loads of Vinyl version over the years since 2001 remasters.
But I guess for me having bought all these previous versions I cant justify laying out for another CD package just to get a “Remix” Disc which to be honest are never as good as the original. Also judging by the photo of the 2Cd and 3CD sets it looks as if Disc 1 is the old 2001 Remaster Disc as its using the 2001 Label Design and not the NEW designs which are on Discs 2 and 3. (So I would also guess Exodus Disc 1 is the 2001 Remaster). Great album and I would still suggest people buy the 2CD Deluxe set over this as it offers so much more……and there are plenty for sale on Amazon.

  16. David says:

Thanks people but the John Mendelsohn remix of Waiting In Vain is indeed on disc 2 of the Legend compilation but it is the extended mix. I’m looking for the 7 inch version which is the one that was used on the radiostations in 1984. It runs for 4:05.

    • Paul E. says:

@David: “Waiting In Vain (Advert Mix)” 3:59 appears on Disc 3 “Songs of Freedom” & “Waiting In Vain (Remixed by Eric Thorngren)” 4:13 appears on Disc 2 “Legend (Deluxe Edition)”. I have seven official versions/remixes of this track – the above mentioned are close to your 4:05 duration so I thought I’d mention them.

      • David says:

What i know of this track is that the version i am looking for has a bit of an echoeing sound in it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ukRwPRxYi0

        • Paul E. says:

David – that’s the 4:16 studio version just edited down a bit in duration as it appeared on the “Exodus” remaster. The airplane intro is certainly unique to the video version but that’s really it. Anything different you’re hearing is probably a result of the YouTube low res audio “quality”, it being sourced from VHS, etc.

  17. Eat Me says:

If they released the Punky Reggae Party 12″ separately, I’d buy it.

Otherwise, this is the most overrated reggae album; the Dark Side of the Moon/Sgt. Pepper’s/Joshua Tree/OK Computer of Jamaican music.

  18. baward says:

I’m wary of gold vinyl since the Star Wars 4-6 vinyl releases of a while back. They are rather noisy and not in a good way.

  19. David Regan says:

Tell Me why is there is no UK Amazon link For the vinyl box set and why i can’t find it on Amazon UK, yet the 3 CD set and the 2 CD set is available. I have the original vinyl pressing and have it in the 70th Anniversary 11 album box set from 2015, so debating weather to get the 3 CD set as i do not own it on CD, just can’t understand why the vinyl box set is not available on Amazon UK.

  20. Saad says:

‘The Movement Continues’ is utterly pointless. The 2002 2CD deluxe edition is the one to go with.

  21. Steve says:

Bob Clearmountain did such an amazing job on the 5.1 mixes included in the 30th anniversary Blu-ray release of Legend that Universal put out, was praying they’d continue the trend. Sad to see they’ve gone back to just content with no eye to source material.

  22. Dave says:

Paul, while it is clearly stated that Universal will provide a digital download of the entire Super Deluxe Edition if ordered via their site, do you know if a digital download card will be included in packages purchased via other retail outlets?
