Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young / “CSNY 1974”: four disc box set

Rhino will release CSNY 1974 in July, a 40th anniversary celebration of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s 1974 tour.

The set will be available as a 3CD+DVD package or a Pure Audio Blu-ray Audio +DVD set, both featuring 40 previously unreleased live tracks as well as a eight filmed performances on the DVD. The blu-ray element is 192/24 so this should sound amazing.

From the image above, the packaging looks consistent with the Stephen Stills Carry On set which is great news, because that was superb!

The booklet with this has a massive 188 pages and we are promised lots of never-before-seen photos. There is also a cut-down ‘highlights’ single CD version, which seems rather pointless.

“Prohibitive” price tag – The limited edition vinyl set

Vinyl fans with deep pockets will also be interested to know that there will be a limited edition vinyl set of 1,000 copies for sale exclusively via the website that will feature all 40 tracks on six 180-gram twelve-inch records, housed in a “custom laser-etched birch LP folio case”. This set will come with the blu-ray and DVD as well as a coffee table-sized book. Sounds great, but the $500 price tag is somewhat prohibitive.

CSNY 1974 is released on 7 July 2014. At the time of writing Amazon UK doesn’t have the blu-ray listed (groan) but we’ll update when it does. See below for full track listing.

  2. Jenna Appleseed says:

looks like things have gone a bit wrong with pre-orders of the website exclusive version: people complaining of getting overcharged, boxes not-delivered, CSN suing the company who were meant to be producing them.

  3. Mic Smith says:

Amazon UK price has fallen to below £50
so I’ve preordered it from them. The reviews in Mojo and Uncut seem fairly balanced i terms of what is good/bad about this release with Young getting most of the attention for his contributions.
I’m looking forward to the version of Revolution Blues one of my favourite NY tunes.

  4. LedMan says:

    Preordered the BD and DVD.

  5. Stephen says:

Do we know if the DVD is region free?

  6. Dan says:

Sorry to hijack the thread but thought some folks may be interested in some early info about the packaging on the new Led Zeppelin reissues.

Got my 2 CD deluxe editions of the first three albums today and I am disappointed that there are THREE separate stickers covering up the artwork on the sleeve, front and back.

    1. Huge sticker on back with the track listings
    2. Small hologram sticker on back
    3. Barcode sticker on front with edition information

They seem excessive and totally spoil the artwork and past experience tells me not to try peeling any of them off.

I just give up with the stupid decisions made by the people in charge sometimes.

    • Dan says:

Oh and good luck getting the LZ III discs out everybody because the sleeve on that is as bad as the Pink Floyd Discovery packaging for tightness.

  7. Mic Smith says:

I buy CSNY product for the Neil Young material in essence although in doing so I have discovered more than a few decent CSN tunes along the way. This 1974 tour record is a welcome addition to their discography and fills in a significant gap in their career between Deja Vu and American Dream – for most of that period the four piece was either inactive or unproductive.

So for me 12 Neil Young tracks out of 40 means he is well represented and among them a number of rare tracks that haven’t been officially released in any version and a number that have only appeared as studio recordings. Therefore I will simply have to buy this document in one of the formats, probably the CD/DVD combo.

At £63 (I note the Spin CDs lower price and will investigate) it seems a tad expensive but what’s new? That seems to be the way things are with anything with Neil Young’s name attached to it these days. Given its not out for a while I may shop around and see what happens but at least by then the Zeppelin, Gabriel and Tull special editions will have been paid for and I can at last start eating again properly.

  8. palazzo says:

The UK version is well over twice as expensive? That’s got to be a mistake.

  9. Mitchell says:

Kinda torn between Blu-Ray and CD versions. I’d normally opt for the Blu-Ray audio, but without a download code or other equivalent option I wouldn’t be able to load it on my portable devices. (Not without access to equipment I don’t own.)

  10. fan says:

who needs a kidney? I’ve got to buy the last CSNY box set

  11. Martin says:

Check out the international shipping charges for the Vinyl Set – 7 days for $370.64 or 3 days for $420.81 Now that’s what I call prohibitive…

  12. PaulB says:

Another mention for -they have this for £54.99 at present

  13. Andy says:

Even taking into account shipping and potential customs charges, it’s way cheaper to order from Amazon US at these prices. Surely some adjustment is due from Amazon in Europe?

    • Mike says:

Oddly enough, it’s often the reverse here in the US. I almost always order all my imports from Amazon UK rather than US. They’re usually significantly cheaper, even with the shipping (which is usually pretty reasonable). Plus, it doesn’t take a million years to get here and the packing for me has been exceptional.

  14. ken says:

This seems to be well overpriced for what it is. CSN(Y) have released a minute amount of new material over the last 20 years but this is now the fourth box set of old material in the last five years (five if you include the re-issued “CSN” set).

  15. Alan Fenwick says:

Threre’s a super deluxe vinyl edition available directly from the artists website, mind you it will set you back a mere $499.00 plus shipping.

All 40 tracks on six 180-gram 12” vinyl records, housed in a custom laser-etched birch LP folio case.
40 high-quality audio tracks on a Pure Audio Blu-Ray disc
Digital download of full 40 tracks.
    Bonus DVD
Coffee Table size book of never before seen photos from the 1974 tour.

This set is limited to 1000 copies, individually numbered, and housed in a custom laser-etched birch wood box. It is available exclusively through CSNY

    Take a look

  16. Michael1984 says:

The DVD portion of this box looks a way too short. Kinda reminds me of the deluxe Quadrophenia box where a small portion of the songs were mixed into 5.1 so if you want the whole LP you’ll have to buy a separate disc. I wouldn’t be surprised id down the line the “whole 1974 DVD” is released making the DVD in the box redundant. Sorry to be so skeptical about it, but that seems to be the way things are done these days….

  17. Steve says:

Paul great news…nash did talk about blu ray too is there a sde version coming maybe with vinyl. Also any news on the rumoured allmans fillmore deluxe box or neil young archives 2 which seems to be almost there?
