David Bowie ‘Five Years’ live albums available separately on vinyl

bowie_livecomp

The two live albums that were included as part of the David Bowie Five Years box set will be made available separately on vinyl next month.

Live Santa Monica ’72 and Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars – The Motion Picture Soundtrack are both 2LP sets. The latter was, of course, recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on 3 July 1973 but not issued until 1983 when D. A. Pennebaker’s documentary was finally released theatrically around the world (only ten years late).

Live Santa Monica ’72 dates from about nine months earlier and was recorded at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on 20 October 1972. Like the Ziggy live album this wasn’t given an official release in the 1970s either, although it was widely bootlegged. In fact, it wasn’t officially issued until 36 years later, making the 10-year delay for the Hammersmith soundtrack seem very brief indeed.

Assuming the packaging is identical to the Five Years box (unlikely that it will be any different) Ziggy is a glossy gatefold with both vinyl records in poly-lined sleeves. Two printed inner sleeves are also supplied. Santa Monica isn’t a gatefold but it’s a similar deal, with two 180g records in poly-lined sleeves and two excellent additional printed inner sleeves with George Underwood’s paintings on one side of each sleeve. The front of Santa Monica is also spot varnished.

Live Santa Monica ’72 and Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars – The Motion Picture Soundtrack are both issued on 2LP vinyl record on 17 June 2016.

  1. Allen Rendel says:

This Ziggy is the remixed version that has been issued on CD, correct? The 1983 mix was not all that great.

  2. Le Baron says:

Then they’ll release the book alone.
    Then the empty box.
Then this whole complete set will be available separately… :(

  3. Simon F says:

Thoroughly hacked off to recently discover that the original vinyl release of Santa Monica came in a beautiful gatefold sleeve, with printed inners, photo labels and just looks fantastic. Why did EMI not reproduce that for the CD box set. Will it be worth purchasing it on vinyl to get the full package or will it still come in the rip-off single sleeve affair?

  4. johan says:

Do you know for sure that the original vinyl release of Santa Monica came in a gatefold? My official EMI version isn’t.

    • Simon F says:

Check it out on Discogs.com The album also came with a poster which I forgot to mention.

    • Paul Murphy says:

Yes, it came in a lovely Gatefold, individually numbered like the original CD ‘Clam Box’ set. Sadly no-one yet able to convince Jeff Beck to allow ‘Round and Round’ and ‘Jean Genie’/’Love Me Do’ to complete the Hammersmith Show.

  5. Dan says:

Paul…not sure if you are being sarcastic re Re:Call…but I picked up the vinyl to same back in January.

    • Paul Sinclair says:

Wasn’t being sarcastic… Warners surely wouldn’t have the nerve to renegade on that. How did you get your vinyl then?

  6. ken says:

    Waiting for the next box…

    Golden Years!

  7. bob says:

I wonder why Starman isn’t on either of these albums, given that it was his biggest ‘Ziggy’ hit?
I thought that recall was issued on vinyl seperate to the box, at least I thought I read this somewhere.

  8. Brian says:

I’ve seen re:call sold separately in Real Groovy Records in Auckland.

  9. Luke Jackson says:

You only see Re:Call1 being sold separately because record shops are in the habit of ransacking the box sets and selling the vinyl individually. I recently grabbed the Bowie box and book for free at a local place because they had done the same.

    • Eric says:

Not the only Bowie box set to have that done to… i bought the Station to Station box piecemeal

  10. Dean T says:

    Hi all.
I have the original Santa Monica release from 2008 on emi,yes it is numbered and comes with a poster but not gatefold.hope this helps .Dean.

  11. Dan says:

Picked mine up at a record store in boise idaho. I thought I recall seeing a label on the shrinkwrap but I could be mistaken…perhaps a breakdown of a box.
