Jazz On A Summer’s Day / 60th anniversary deluxe edition

DVD+CD+2LP vinyl • Restored visuals • Remastered audio

Charly Records are to reissue the classic 1960 concert film Jazz On A Summer’s Day as a lavish four-disc deluxe edition. This record of the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival featured an amazing array of talent including as Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, Anita O’Day, Dinah Washington and Chuck Berry.

The film was conceived and directed by photographer Bert Stern and filmed over three days in August 1958, with Columbia Records jazz producer, George Avakian, as the musical director.

Such is the importance of this record of late fifties America, in 1999 the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.

This new four-disc deluxe edition celebrates 60 years since the festival and features newly restored visuals on the DVD (with bonus documentary and extras), a newly remastered soundtrack on CD and across two 10-inch vinyl records (mastered at half-speed).

Additionally this set includes a 40-page hardcover book with sleeve notes by Fred Dellar, along with artist and track-by-track details.

Jazz On A Summer’s Day will be issued on 26 October 2018

  1. AndyB says:

“DVD+2CD+2LP vinyl” or DVD+CD+2LP vinyl? Still confused :(

    • Paul Sinclair says:

Just a mistake. It’s one CD.

      • AndyB says:

        That’s what I thought. Thanks for the confirmation/edit :)

      • AndyB says:

Oh, and Paul, I was just thinking that it must be sometimes quite irritating to have so many editors scouring your posts and pointing out even the smallest mistakes. But we love your site and want everything to be perfect, just like our music releases. (“Heroes”, anyone?)

  2. Jurg says:

Good to hear Charly Records is still in business. What happened? Did they release any album in 2017? Last year nothing changed on their website.

  3. Moonhead says:

I hope for a bluray release

  4. Steen K says:

I love that film, just a pity they didn’t include the lovely solo cello (I think it’s Fred Kaz from Chico Hamilton’s band) playing Bach’s cello suite nr. 1 in an empty room. I have never forgotten it, the images and the music a perfect match.

  5. William Keats says:

One CD or two? Photo shows two, but the audio program seems short enough to fit on one.
