Mel & Kim: The Singles Box Set

The Appleby sisters’ brief reign of pop collected across seven CD singles

It’s time to get fresh for the weekend as Mel & Kim are to be celebrated with a new box set.

The Singles Box Set includes seven expanded CD singles, each in authentic replica sleeve artwork, and are housed in an outer box with gold foil-blocking. The set contains the four UK singles (‘Showing Out’, ‘Respectable’, ‘FLM’ and ‘That’s The Way it is’) with every conceivable mix, as well as the US only ‘I’m the One Who Really Loves You’, the Scandinavian single ‘More Than Words Can Say’ and the Europe-only ‘Megamix: Ninety!’

Featuring no less than 72 remastered tracks and many rare and unreleased mixes, this collection serves to highlight the pioneering pop/house crossover sound created especially for Mel & Kim by songwriting and production powerhouse Stock Aitken Waterman and the PWL studio team. ‘Respectable’ became SAW’s first own composition to top the UK charts (they’d merely produced Dead or Alive’s ‘You Spin Me Round’ stomper) and while there are online debates about it, ‘Showing Out’ is widely considered the first ever British house record.

Sisters Melanie and Kim Appleby briefly lit up British pop when they first emerged in late 1986 with the Stock Aitken Waterman-produced ‘Showing Out (Get Fresh at the Weekend)’, becoming a top three smash in the UK and No.1 in Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland as well as a No.1 in the US dance listings.

After the global No.1 success of the follow-up ‘Respectable’, the duo were barely out of the tabloids, especially when it emerged that Mel had done some earlier artistic shots where all her clothes had fallen off. The palaver only increased the public’s love for the sisters-next-door duo. All through their success Mel was also privately dealing with malignant paraganglioma, a form of cancer on her liver, and was undergoing treatment on her spine during their FLM album campaign. Mel actually discharged herself from hospital in order to record ‘That’s The Way it is’ and the duo carried on promoting it throughout her visits back and forth for treatment. Mel sadly died suddenly in 1990 leaving Kim to gamely carry on and launch a solo career with the hit ‘Don’t Worry’. She has recently come back into the public eye, popping up co-presenting pop documentaries.

Compiled with the blessing and involvement of Kim Appleby, the Singles Box Set also boasts a 24-page booklet featuring lyrics, discography, new sleeve notes and many classic and rare images. Tay-tay-tay-tay t-t-t-t-tay-tay take a look at the full track listing below.
