Phil Collins / Take A Look At Me Now / 8CD box with single disc remasters

Single disc remasters • In a box • No bonus tracks • Great price

After the deluxe reissue campaign of 2016, Warners will gather all eight remastered Phil Collins‘ studio albums and issue them in a great value Take A Look At Me Now box set.

The eight-CD box shares the moniker and design of the one that came with the deluxe reissues of Face Value and Both Sides but this set isn’t about expanded reissues, it’s about bringing together album-only remasters. Long-players in the box are Collins’ entire solo studio discography: Face Value; Hello, I Must Be Going; No Jacket Required; …But Seriously, Both Sides, Dance Into The Light, Testify and Going Back.

There is obviously no reason to get this if you have a complete collection of the deluxe sets, but it’s fair to say that those reissues – curated by Collins himself – were rather haphazard affairs, often missing of favourite remixes, or sought after demos in favour of live tracks. If you only cherry-picked a few favourites, then this could be for you.

This new Take A Look At Me Now box is incredible value at under £20 in the UK and from the image above each album appears to be presented in a gatefold card wallet. The covers are the rather innovative revised art, with Phil re-creating the old covers at the age of 64, although you could argue that doesn’t necessarily make sense if you’re just re-presenting remastered versions of the originals.

Update (25 Oct): There are actually two versions of this box set. The one pictured above at just under £20 comes in a slipcase box and has gatefold wallets for each album, but a slightly cheaper variant (not that much cheaper) comes in a clamshell box and the album wallets are not gatefold.

The Take A Look At Me Now box set will be released on 24 November 2017.

  1. Stephen Leigh says:

Only 3 of these remasters were printed and released in South Africa (Face Value, …But Seriously and Both Sides so I would be keen to get this set. I generally only ever listen to the second or bonus discs on sets like this once or twice so the original albums are what I’m usually after.

  2. Tim-meh says:

Its official. Phil Collins fans are the least exploited/ripped off demographic in the Super Deluxe universe.

    • Gis Bun says:

      “Least” or most?
Take A look… only has the first disc. Good for newbees but not for those who bought the 2CD editions.

  3. Daryl says:

Am I reading that right? All 8 albums for under £20? That’s ridiculous!

  4. Tony Orwell says:

not sure how much appetite there will be for the straight 8 with nothing extra added, having said that I have already earmarked two sets for christmas presents and no doubt that is their target audience.

    • Ben Williams says:

I bet for the casual fans, and for Xmas presents for family and friends, this set will sell well for £20.

  5. Ben Williams says:

Wow £20?! Amazing value! If you didn’t get them last year, and want to discover Phil, this is THE box to buy!

  6. pinkfloyd says:

    hey Phil!
if I pick up this remaster box, won’t it still be incomplete?
what happens to the non album singles then?
    …and isn’t Going Back reimagined?
isn’t it ironic that the title song of the box isn’t in it?

  7. Marc says:

Great price. For that, you even don’t get one coloured vinyl by Paul McCartney.

  8. gogandmagog says:

My wife likes Phil Collins (I hate it  )
She is no a music nut like us here (no interested in mixes, demos, b-sides,etc.)

20 GBP is incredible value, the box could be great for Xmas

I already give her as a present the 3 CD The Singles past year.

Considering that, is anything here in this box missing?

    advice please!!!

    • CJ Feeney says:

Between the 3 CD singles and this box you get pretty much everything officially released . I suppose completeists would want all the Disney music but I wouldn’t know how available that is.

      • Phil Morris says:

No, you are missing all the extras on the earlier 2-CD reissues… which were incomplete in themselves with various b-sides omitted. Then there are all the 12″ mixes…

    • Michael says:

re anything missing, these are all of the standard studio albums, you would still need to have Buster / Tarzan soundtrack albums and a singles compilation for any non album singles – Separate Lives, True Colours etc and then there’s live albums too.

      • Larry Davis says:

Every single one of those non-album singles are on the “Singles” triple!! Every.single.one…as for this 8CD box, for me it’s pointless because I have the box with all 8 doubles in them…and it’s mostly demos and B-sides with some cool live stuff…wish it had all 12″ remixes tho. My biggest gripe is what Phil did with “Going Back”, calling it “The Essential Going Back”, and doing a Morrissey…I need to buy the original double to get the missing tracks…no biggie…until getting this set, I never had any of the albums post-“But Seriously”…hearing the 2nd 4, they are all really good, but “Both Sides” took getting used to because his sound was so big, and that album is so minimal and artful, it’s like Phil pulled a Blue Nile there…all good tho.

        • Disney Mike says:

Every single one of the non-album singles? Where’s “The Man with the Horn”? “I Like the Way”? As far as I can tell, those have never appeared on CD anywhere.

  9. Michael G says:

A no brainier a box with just the normal albums and less than £20.00 at the moment.

  10. Eric says:

Seems like you omitted fnac.fr from the 8CD box set list of retailers although it is marginally cheaper (€20.99 – approx. £18.70 v. €21.62 at amazon.fr).
    Fantastic website though!
    All the best.

  11. mixa says:

Frankly surprised they have the nerve to charge anything for it.

  12. LMTR14 says:

Pat Bateman is glad this is released because he wants to get all formats.

  13. Chris says:

    Hi Paul!
There are wrong prices for the deluxe editions for amazon.de :-/

  14. R.nauld says:

I like the card sleeves but the new artwork really puts me off (that may seem unimportant for some but it is for me). I wish the albums had been re-released as they were with his 64 year-old self on the cover of the album booklets only.
What a missed opportunity this time not to add to this box set a couple of bonus discs with all the demos that exist! Would have made it a better collection, even if the price increased because of that.

I really find his come back was badly orchestrated and feel like there was no “lesson” learned. He came back as a weakened artist, on the defensive with an autobiography that was too matter of fact and not detailed enough when we know the stellar career he has/had (despite its end reeking of MOR) + a series of remaster editions tossed like a salad with the minimum fuss to find an edge that would have enhanced the main albums. A shame really…

  15. Gis Bun says:

Was not impressed with the original 8 CDs. Liner notes for [I think] all 8 had the same first few paragraphs before it switched to something about the album itself.
Unsure why some 2nd CDs flipped from live to a demo or studio track before switching back to live tracks before going back to other demos and studio tracks.
No remixes. That’s good and bad.
Some songs omitted [Take A Look At Me Now was in demo form only for example].
12″ers CD not included – will it ever get remastered?
Going Back became “Essentials” and had less tracks than the original release. Threw only 1 of 4 digital tracks found on the CD/DVD release.

  16. Chris Squires says:

He should have done what Abba did and have a single (or double) 9th disc with all / many of the collected extra tracks or demos. Forget the live stuff, just the alternate versions.

  17. Art says:

Thanks Paul, I ordered one from Amazon uk.

  18. Dean says:

I think some of you are forgetting what this is – a budget product for casual fans. If the bonus material had been included there’d be complaints about being ripped off last year. Same if they included remixes etc.

I think they’ve done well here. Love the cover art change, which makes it easy to tell reissues from the originals.

Having said all of that, I only really enjoy the first album, so a single disc of that is more than adequate. However, we should applaud when labels do it right, and in this case I think they have.

  19. Ken Evans says:

I’d say it’s right for what it is – except, why on earth would you name a box set after a song that is not part of the box? That’s incredibly bad because some casual fan out there is going to buy this assuming that track (which I don’t particularly dig myself but still) is on it.

    • Larry Davis says:

It is and it’s not…the title is sort of a joke and the punchline is the new set of covers…the song itself is on the “Singles” sets, as are all the other soundtrack and non-album singles…

  20. Rob says:

Thanks for the info. As I write, price on HMV website is 16.99GBP post free in the UK.

  21. Jake says:

I’m not enough of a “solo-Phil” fan to buy this, but it’s still a great set for casual fans who might only have one or two albums, or used to have his stuff long ago but don’t anymore.

I’ve bought packages like this before where I’m enough of a fan to want the albums, but not so much that I need deluxe versions with demos or other material that I’ll only listen to once. Or in other cases where I’m a newcomer to an established artist and I can get all their albums in one purchase.

Cheers to the record company on this one.

  22. WILLIAM ENGLAND says:

While not personally interested in PC – I think that Warners should be given “two thumbs up” for the pricing alone…. and I rather like the recreated covers – quite a nifty idea really.

  23. Daibbsy says:

Pat Bateman is the new Snood! (Sorry couldn’t find a dancing banana emoji). Hoping to hear more in the future. Btw surprised we haven’t heard anything about the new Steven Wilson 5.1 of Rush AFTK. The usual shenanigans online because the BD is not available as a stand-alone disc.

  24. Aaron says:

Whatever happened to the box set of collaborations/ productions he talked about in interviews? Is this the end of the reissue campaign? Disappointed if there is nothing else such as a b-sides/ remix collection or dvd box set like the Genesis movies box.

Also wonder if there will be a Bowie concert films box set after all the album boxes are out…?

    • Paul Sinclair says:

Well remembered. Not sure if his reissue campaign is officially ‘over’ or not.

    • Ben Williams says:

Phil also mentioned that not all the B sides were on the deluxe editions because the others were “available elsewhere”. The way he said it sounded like there was another set with all the rest on. I wouldn’t be surprised if next year we see a set like that. Fans would definitely want a set that had all the other B sides on and various outtakes and demos. We know they’re out there!

    • Phil Morris says:

I missed any reference to a collaborations compilation in all the interviews I saw and read. Whilst great to get all these collated together, the rights issues will be horrendous and it’s bound to be hideously incomplete, given the number and range of work he did. Saying that, I’d love to get the Nova album on CD.

  25. negative1 says:

i liked the 12 inchers compilation. but that doesn’t count
    as a regular album release.

maybe an update, with more newer mixes would be nice.

  26. R.naud says:

Honestly, no “casual” fan of any artist buys box sets, they’ll buy a ‘greatest hits’ compilation or maybe a live album (as a souvenir of a concert they went to). Box sets are by nature aimed at the real fans and in the cases where demos are included, to the completists. If the low price is meant to open the box set market to a larger ‘casual’ audience, I doubt that audience actually exists. To me it just cheapens the artist’s integrity (or what’s left of it… ). Let’s face it, only the first 2 albums are good and have some originality, the next 2 established him but he had already started repeating himself, and all the rest that followed is just uninspired and forgettable.

    • Chris Squires says:

You are probably right but, at under £20 or so it also hits the Christmas present market squarely on the head. It’ll be the absolute perfect present for a person of a certain age. It’s cheap whilst certainly seeming more expensive than it is. And that is perfect.

      • CJ Feeney says:

I’ve paid £25 for Leonard Cohen complete; £30 for Joni Mitchell’s 9 CD set same for Alan Parsons and the Byrds sets. There was not a lot of bonus material in those. I’m in the market for this set as I was unimpressed with the “deluxe” sets.

I think this is good value compared to the many similar boxes on the market.

        • Larry Davis says:

The cheap Leonard Cohen “complete” was never complete because it doesn’t have the live albums in it (the set with them goes for over 400 bucks)…and it’s now not complete studio cuz it doesn’t have his final 3 in it either… Old Ideas, Popular Problems & You Want It Darker…I’m waiting for a full new complete set now, thank you.

          • Chris Squires says:

The ELO classic albums box set is very similar to the Joni Mitchell / Leonard Cohen boxes and it has all of the bonus tracks / alternate versions and out-takes at the end of each album. I have all three sets and would thoroughly recommend them as a great entry point to each artist…
Plus I didn’t pay more than £25 for each set. Bargains all…..

I am not sure whether there is anything to be gained from trying Joni’s “Love Has Many Faces: A Quartet, A Ballet, Waiting To Be Danced” Box set, it looks lovely though, does anyone here recommend it?

    • Mike the Fish says:

I bought a (nearly) complete set of albums in a box of an artist I was casually interested in. The price was right and I wanted to hear their musical journey. Different strokes for different folks.

  27. Jake says:

    > Honestly, no “casual” fan of any artist buys box sets, they’ll buy a ‘greatest hits’ compilation or maybe a live album (as a souvenir of a concert they went to).

In one sense, I can see what you’re saying. But when you can get an artist’s catalog for not much more than the price of a two or three CD best-of set, it’s not a huge jump. Especially if this is being sold in places like Wal-Mart, Costco, Barnes & Noble, or Target… an impulse buy or a gift for Christmas. Only the record company knows for sure who they’re targeting with this and what they reasonably expect to get out of it. Maybe it’s more accurate to refer to this as a “box store impulse buy”.

I think you’re right… the traditional box sets are for the hard-core or completists of an artist. And in our minds, we interpret “box set” a certain way. Those folks probably bought the PC deluxe editions when they came out. I can’t figure out who else this set would be aimed at if not casual fans even if they’re trying to expand what “casual” might mean.

I would be curious to know how well they sell. A search on Amazon for “complete studio albums” and related terms show a boatload of these types of packages at various price points. So this package isn’t a new idea. (Just spotted a UFO package of 10 CDs from 74-86 is due in December. Hmmm.)

    • Ben Williams says:

I wouldn’t agree that causal fans don’t buy sets like this, I have bought these cheaper less-than-£20 box sets before of an artist I have casually liked (e.g. had a single disc best-of or like hearing them on the radio, compilations and/or streaming). The recent ZZ Top Warner albums box springs to mind; £20 and I snapped it up in Sainsburys. I think if you’re inclined to buy physical discs, and a set like this has a nice design and is great value, then it can be tempting. And it is a good way to get into an artist IMO. And with Xmas approaching, I can imagine many stockings having a copy of this set in for the price.

  28. Bernie says:

This is fantastic as I didn’t buy the 2 disc sets as the second discs material didn’t impress me..Now I will have all the single remasters with oversees shipping on Amazon.UK it’s just under 26 US dollars..Deal too good to pass up!!!Pre-Ordered!!!!!

  29. Spencer E says:

What a Spectacular deal! I’ve always liked PC but for some reason, never felt compelled to get the albums. Here’s my chance. Thx for the heads up, Paul!

  30. Daryl says:

I’m not sure if i’m being thick (probably), but what is the bottom box set? The top one appears to be all single-disc albums in one box, yet the bottom one looks to me as though it is a box containing just two double-disc versions, yet is more that double the price…

    Am I reading it wrong?

  31. bertielego says:

The only way such a box set would appeal to me, i.e. a box set containing albums without extra tracks or extra discs:
    1. replace the cheap cardboard covers by state of the art Japanese mini LP replicas;
    2. replace the cheap box by a sturdy Disk Union Style box;
    3. optionally press the discs onto some collectable format (HQCD, SHM-CD, Blu-Spec CD…)

And I could even imagine two variations of such treatment, one with original artworks, and one with TALAMN revisited artworks.

In other words, if you want me to pay for something I already own, make it worth…

  32. R. I. Piped Off Again says:

So, after spending about £15 per set on the 8 2CD versions last year (£120), and a further £15 on the singles compilation in order to get tracks that should have been on the album bonus discs, we are now stabbed in the back with the complete album collection for under £20. Another example of the true fan being ripped off and the record company showing their true colours and admitting the true value of the heritage acts they supposedly hold in high esteem. Not the artists fault, but a kick in the balls for their fans.

    • Phil Morris says:

I don’t feel ripped off in the slightest. Not least for the reason that there is no “need” to buy this latest collection. Unless a casual fan or collector. Falling into the latter category, sub-£20 for these sets makes me feel even less ripped-off than I have in other reissue campaigns. And you clearly over-paid last time: I think I got all of the double CD sets for less than a tenner. Likewise the 3 CD Singles set. And didn’t pay much more than that for any of the vinyl reissues, excluding the clear vinyl But Seriously…

  33. elliott buckingham says:

having brought the vinyl boxset and not buying the dbl cd reissues because the bonus tracks were lacking I only by bonus disc albums if the disc has 12″ versions on this is on my xmas list no brainer at that price

  34. Adey says:

Paul, there are 2 links on amazon uk, the other link is cheaper at £15.99 (still sold by amazon uk not third party).
To get even more of a bargain, i would advise fellow music lovers to check their amazon accounts- i went on the iphone app and clicked on a promo link for “amazon top up” where it stated if i topped up by £25 i would get a “free £5 credit” added to the balance. I topped up £25 and checked the balance about 30 seconds later (its now £30 so i think i will treat myself to the queen is dead boxset!!!)

  35. Adey says:

The asin code on amazon for £15.99 version is B076JKKYBZ

    • Paul Sinclair says:

There are widgets for both on the post, so not sure why you feel the need to post this information…?

  36. Adey says:

Sorry my fault didn’t read it properly duh!!!

  37. Paul Berney says:

I’ve been waiting for this set, having held off on buying the individual releases, knowing this would happen. I was excited when I saw it finally being announced. I was even more excited when I found out there were two versions. I immediately assumed that one would be the 8 album discs, while the gatefold set would have the 2-disc sets of each album. I never believed they’d split hairs over gatefold sleeves. If they wanted those sleeves, why not just release it like that? Why bother releasing the other one? Is it just a mean trick to make us think those gatefolds hold two discs?

  38. Colin says:

Deluxe issue of 12″ers will be next with ALL the 12 inch mixes by the Phil myster on there! You heard it from me first

  39. Ron de Joode says:

These boxes are value for money. All the latest remastered versions of the albums containing the content of the versions released back in the days. Extras and bonus remixes are funny, but sometimes not necessary. Replacing the original versions for a reasonable price and with an updated remaster are the main reasons for me to order this cheap X-mas present to myself.

  40. Philip Birtwistle says:

I sort of think that this and the 3 disc singles box will do for a Phil Collins collection very nicely. Don’t need all the B-Sides and remixes and live tracks and demos and stuff.

  41. Philip Birtwistle says:

If you tuck this up alongside the Deluxe singles set you should have all the Phil that the casual fan needs……
