Pink Floyd acknowledge blu-ray issues with The Early Years and will replace

Pink Floyd / The Early Years 1965-1972 box set

After complaints from fans, Pink Floyd have admitted that “a small batch” of faulty blu-ray discs have been identified in their Early Years box set, but say this “could not have been predicted”. They are offering fans replacement discs…

In a post on their website under the title “Replacement of faulty Early Years discs” the band posted the following statement:

“Following reported problems from fans, a small batch of faulty Blu-ray discs from the Early Years 1965-1972 box set have been identified: the 1972 ‘Obfusc/ation’ Blu-ray and bonus package ‘Continu/ation’ Blu-ray 1.

A disc replacement service has now been set up via fulfilment house Docdata. Purchasers with a non-playing copy of PFREY6BD or PREFY7BD1 should contact them at customerserviceteam@warnermusic.com and they will arrange a replacement disc.

We apologise for the inconvenience and stress that this may have caused to box purchasers, although we have ascertained that this unavoidable damage could not have been predicted.”

The Early Years 1965 – 1972 was released on 11 November 2016.

49 responses to Pink Floyd acknowledge blu-ray issues with The Early Years and will replace

  1. baward says:

Good on them to respond so quickly and with the right response. “Obfuscation (n.) the obscuring of intended meaning in communication, making the message confusing, wilfully ambiguous, or harder to understand.”

  2. bert says:

Most massively overpriced box set I own and waiting for the right time to sell.

Two of my discs were faulty, two of the foreign language feature films don’t have subtitles and are essentially unwatchable, the large memorabilia was wrapped in torn tissue paper, some audio worse than bootlegs, the vinyl was out the sleeves and scuffed, wrong track date info, feeble and very brief liner notes, the ‘bonus disc’ balls up and subsequent face-saving lies etc…………….

The Atom Heart Mother Quad is fantastic though and I can’t believe it hasn’t been released on a modern format sooner. I’d love to hear an official statement on the Meddle 5.1 and high-res stereo mix files being accidentally left on one of the Bluray discs.

    £375 my arse.

    • StevieB says:

Surely better to have just asked for your money back as you’ll need to point all of these faults out to potential purchasers when you’re selling them, so I’m not sure how much of the £375 you’ll get back.

  3. Ben in Colorado says:

I contacted them three days ago and this morning I received an email saying the discs will be in on the 28th. They asked for my address and they said they’d send them out. No proof of purchase was necessary.

  4. vikerii says:

Yep, good for them. It’s what they should do, but it seems companies sometimes just rather cover their ears and hope it gets forgotten.

My copy seems to have been spared, in that both those discs play just fine. But I’m absolutely glad for those who weren’t so lucky.

Now if they could spend some more time and find that lost master for the real Seabirds track… :)

  5. Kiki says:

    what a pity…
The new normal nowadays seems to be : The more you pay, the more you have defects…

  6. Gary Hunter says:

How many more times are we going to see faulty products, you never had this years ago, have record companies banished their quality control section ………seems like it to me!

    • Paul Sinclair says:

I don’t reckon mistakes have increased, just social media flags them all instantly and labels have to react.

      • Gavin Hallesy says:

The 1st UK press of DSOTM on vinyl has a pressing fault on ‘Money’. It’s still considered to be the finest pressing and is of course the most desirable (and the most expensive). There have always been ‘faults’ but as said, they get corrected pretty quickly now.

    • emstro says:

The problems are surely amplified only because the number of items per sales unit have risen exponentially; nobody was buying 27-discs sets even ten years ago.

    • emstro says:

Side one of Rubber Soul and side two of Revolver were both recut after the first batch of releases.

  7. Daltronica says:

I’m not the target market for this, but If this is the only error in the entire box, I think people should be very happy. Mistakes are bound to happen with a project of this scale. Seems to happen plenty on boxes with 2-3 discs! (the reason I haven’t grabbed the Sparkle in the Rain box yet). It’s far to say the price of this set is only going to up exponentially.

  8. Juarez says:

Does anyone know when the boxes will start to be sold separately. How was it promised?

  9. Dean T says:

I’m very happy with my set ,it arrived in perfect nick ..not a mark…but one blu Ray would not play ..I had faith this would get sorted as I remember that the oh by the way box set had a few issues and yes it all got sorted out. I’m just starting to make my through the set for a second time and now it’s a little less overwhelming it’s a lot more enjoyable..some of it is just amazing ,the obscure by clouds remix on headphones just blew me away (still prefer the new vinyl cut though) they have made it sound so contemporary it could have been made just yesterday. Can you imagine if a new band came up with that as a debute ..if only..

  10. Thanks for the info, Paul.

Anyone know which tracks to test for errors? I haven’t gotten to these discs yet.

  11. Ben in Colorado says:

I also collect classical box sets. The quality level on those is incredible. As an example, the new Mozart 225 box set has 200 CDs, and there is not a single issue with any of them. Out of the many I have bought over the past 5 years, only one had an issue where a disc was duplicated. Not a bad track record.

  12. Dave says:

I ordered mine from Italy and was charged just $377.00 US dollars. Luckily both Blue Ray discs play but now I have a disc with no where to put it. Seems the production was before the planning because set 6 should have had a double plastic holder on the inside opening cover to hold the 2016 OBC’s remaster. Because I am a huge PF fan and this set is really more than I hoped for, I can move forward and forgive the production team that put everything together.
As for the sound, a lot of footage can be found on bootle dvd’s that sound a lot worse than these. I am just glad that they were able to get the sound good enough to release it with footage otherwise we could have had a box set with most of 70, 71 footage put back in the archives for –
PINK FLOYD THE EARLY YEARS REMASTER SUPER DELUXE MILLENNIUM EDITION!
HAPPY HOLIDAYS and thanks for all the hard work you put into this web site, Paul.

    All The Best
    Dave

  13. Paul Soper says:

I’m hoping (in vain) for a Black Friday deal on this set.

  14. Fat Old Bloke says:

My blurays play no problem in my Oppo but would not play in anyother Bluray player so I will get mine replaced.
Is it the manufacturing technology changing that doesn’t agree with many players?

  15. RJSWinchester says:

Looking forward to buying the “Replacement of faulty Early Years discs” Super Deluxe Edition.

  16. Simon F says:

Good that this has been acknowledged but no mention of replacing both the DVD and Blu Ray featuring the missing subtitles for Le Valley and More (PFREY7-DVD 2 / PFREY 7-BD2) …. Anyway hope I can get my PFREY 7 BD 1 replaced. PFREY 6 BD plays fine. I’m watching it whilst writing this!!

  17. eric slangen says:

I’m incredible happy with this set. It’s a set I have waited ages for.
I’m a Floyd fan but not a diehard so most of the music and video is new to my ears.
And yes they made some mistakes but you can NEVER satisfy a diehardfan.
I’m glad they replace the discs so quick and easy.

  18. Frank Gerhards says:

“Couldn´t be predicted…..”? Same Thing with the DSOTM immersion box set when it came out. The first batch of multichannel blu-rays were faulty. Why such things repeat? Simple:
“Money, it’s a gas. Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash…..I’m in the high-fidelity first class travelling set and think I need a Lear jet” and they want it fast! What about quality checks before such expensives boxes are released? Now its our problem and takes our (!!!) to get those faulty discs checked and replaced. I don´t like this kind of “P.F. Business”

  19. ANDREW r says:

Moan moan moan .I remember back in the day returning 6 copies of DSOTM
to shops because of pressing fault after fault . I finally gave up and kept the best
one available. Nothing new under the sun . There has been much comment on the price
but Superdeluxe itself is selling the Moody blues box for £350 which has less content and less discs. Lastly there are, as of writing, less than 900 sets available worldwide . I assume that when the standalone sets come out this boxset will be deleted. This should make it collectible? As ever you pay your money… Me i am just grateful this stuff is still being produced it’s a niche product and while expensive can’t have been that profitable for the company?

  20. Richard says:

I had one cd with a scratch on the surface, the second from the AHM period, Amazon has already shipped a new set to replace. I have tested almost all BluRays by watching them on my pc (and are now working through the last one) and have tested all CD’s and DVD’s with the use of software that I use to get the data onto HardDiscs…

Great to see the extra disc with Pompeji audio and hope to find some software to get the Meddle 5.1 extracted from the BluRay (cannot be accessed through the menus).

  21. Richard says:

I see lots of comments regarding subtitles on More and La Vallee, but I have seen somewhere a statement from Pink Floyd that they could not retain the rights for these two films to add the subtitles.

From previous releases of these two movies on DVD (do not know the BluRays) only the second releases had some subtitles (subtiteling French, German but not English).

  22. Uncle Meat says:

I ordered mine from amazon.it and there was an extra cd in a slim cardboard sleeve on top of the box. It says: “Replacement cd disc for OBFUSC/ATION PFREY6 – CD (stereo 2016 mix of Pink Floyd Live At Pompeii cd supplied in error)”.

There´s no mention of Live At Pompeii as cd version in the track listing, only DVD/BR. And there´s no holder for the cd in set six. Is the Pompeii cd really a pleasant “error”? A happy accident? Did I receive something extra that wasn´t even meant for the box (but perhaps for a possible later single cd release)?

  23. HalloweenJack says:

This set was a big disappointment for a number of reasons.
Here’s hoping A NICE PAIR box set will be released next year will BBC upgrades and additional outtakes not included on this set.

  24. Paul Kent says:

Looks like I’ll have to check mine out before Christmas now, then, and make sure none of mine are faulty. Don’t want tears in the eggnog, do we?

I understand the disappointment and frustration, but only up to a point. The error has been identified and a solution has (very promptly) been arrived at – and, from a reply above, without having to provide proof of purchase or incurring any additional costs. Maybe I’m missing something but, to me, that is above average customer service.

As for sub-bootleg quality audio, any text I read prior to purchase indicates that the sound on some recordings ain’t so hot. So, I bought knowing this.

And, finally, having More and La Valee sans subtitles is no biggie for me as I had no intention of watching them as received wisdom tells us they are both absolutely turd!

Oh, and you’ve got Live At Pompeii on CD as a bonus. Rejoice!

    • Paul Kent says:

… and the 5.1 of Meddle is on the relevant disc, I believe. They removed the option from the disc menu but the data is still stored on there, apparently.

    • DaveM says:

@Paul, given your circumstances and as that this will be a very special present to you, why don’t you just get the replacement discs anyway and leave the box intact till Christmas. That way you are covered and don’t miss looking forward to it. Just a thought.

    • dom says:

You’ve misunderstood the bootleg quality audio reference. There are existing bootlegs of a better quality than the sources used for this set.

  25. Dean T says:

    Hi Andrew
Just read your post and would like to ask were you got the only 900 sets from . I’m not disputing you ..it is out of genuine intrest …if that’s true then this will become quite collectible.
    Regards Dean.

    • ANDREW r says:

The guy who sold me mine as an independent retailer said he only had three
and his computer was showing Warners as only having 973 as of that date still in stock for request worldwide. Added to that is the fact that when the standalone sets come out the main set is to be deleted. He is a reputable dealer and it was in the course of our conversation that he revealed this info. I see no logical reason to doubt it.

  26. colm47 says:

I was not going to play mine until Christmas as it’s a present for me.
I had opened the box just to check it was all in there!

But having just checked the 2 discs mentioned, mine don’t work and I have sent away my e mail.
Hopefully they will be replaced quickly enough.

I’m interested in how limited an edition the box set is as Andrew mentions above.

  27. ANDREW r says:

Reading my post again i hope i didn’t give the impression that there were only 900 sets
produced .That wasn’t my intention there may have been many thousands produced .There were as of last week just over 900 (probably less now) left in stock unsold. Hope that clarifies it.

  28. Dean T says:

    Hi Andrew.
Thanks for the reply.yes I can see this set being deleted quite quickly. Also i read on the brain damage site(Floyd fan site)that the pompia cd will not be included in the stand alone set.
As for numbers ,there’s a post on the Steve Hoffman site that gives a figure of 2800 but does not go into detail . May be one day we will find out .
Hope to here about the replacement disks soon ,I think there going to be available by about the 28th so I guess there just collecting emails for now, just have to be patient.

    • Eddie says:

      Dean,

The figure given on the Hoffman site was 28,000 not 2,800.

      “Here” = hear?

      “There” (x2) = they’re?

      !!!

  29. Sean says:

I was thinking of buying this from Amazon Germany….are the dvd/blu rays included all NTSC or PAL if purchased from European source?

  30. Zongadude says:

Just bought this box set (in France). Here are the specifications, as printed on the side of the box:
-NTSC, region o (dvds), region ABC (Blurays).

I guess ALL copies are NTSC worldwide.

  31. Gerry says:

I have just requested my replacements today. I included my postal address and where I purchased from. Hopefully get the replacements soon.

  32. Michael says:

What do you guys think about the inclusion of the ’74 live version of Echoes on the last disc? Besides being totally out of place, I don’t understand the purpose. I assume, they ran out of material from the early years and had to fill the space.

    • Johnny Feathers says:

I’m of the mind “the more the merrier”, especially for the price. Now I’m trying to figure out just how to organize all of the audio material in iTunes–one big batch (which is how I currently have it), or split up into the component segments/years. I do think I’ll resort the live ’74 material as one “album”, though, since it’s finally complete.

  33. Dean T says:

Looking into the replacement disk program I have sent two emails to the given addresses and received the same reply..basicly because I did not buy from the warners web store I am not eligible for replacement?…not a good start …anyone else have some info?…
