shineon

Procol Harum‘s 1968 album Shine On Brightly will be reissued by Esoteric this June as a three-CD deluxe edition.

The band’s second studio long-player has been remastered from the original tapes and this new set includes both the original stereo mix and the mono mix, with the latter previously unreleased on CD.

As well as those two versions of the album, this deluxe edition will include 20 bonus tracks (nine previously unreleased) drawn from studio sessions, single mixes and three BBC radio sessions recorded in 1968.

Packaged in a clamshell box, this package features restored artwork and an illustrated booklet with sleeve notes by Procol Harum Biographer Henry Scott-Irvine. You also get a poster.

This Shine On Brightly deluxe edition is released on 29 June 2015.

  1. Nick says:

Hopefully this will be the correct speed and not the top fast by about 2.8% Salvo version.

  2. BritinDetroit says:

Grand Hotel or Exotic Birds would definitely get my attention.

  3. Rob says:

According to Burning Shed, the debut album will get a 2 CD reissue too:

A 2015 remastered deluxe double cd edition of Procol Harum’s classic debut album.

Expanded to include 27 bonus tracks (8 previously unreleased), including A Whiter Shade of Pale and Homburg, along with rare B-sides, alternate session takes and stereo mixes and seven previously unreleased BBC Radio sessions from June and September 1967.

Includes a lavishly illustrated booklet fully restoring the original album artwork and a new essay by Procol Harum biographer Henry Scott-Irvine, along with a facsimile promotional shop poster for the release of the album in January 1968.

  4. Runicen says:

A bit of a bummer as it looks like some of the bonus materials from the last issue of this album haven’t made the cut.

I was unaware that there was a speed issue in the Salvo version (I only owned that version digitally and never did an A/B with my vinyl copy).

  5. Jim says:

Will also include text that has not been proof read, wrong tracks used and audio glitches.

    Presumably.

I have bought enough deluxe editions now to be highly cautious of the final product.

  6. Dave says:

Looking forward to these. Never heard an Esoteric release that wasn’t excellent.

  7. John says:

It’s on my wish list. I got a similar product from Esoteric of the Moody Blues’ ‘Magnificent Moodies’ and it’s a good set with excellent notes. Could do without the poster though… any poster that fits inside a clamshell has to be mere filler.

  8. Mark Hanson says:

UK price at present is pretty much the best for me in the USA, since they deduct VAT. I can stand the wait.

  9. Thomas Casagranda says:

The first four albums, reissued via Salvo, have been deleted rapidly.

From Broken Barricades up to Something Magic, you’ll find nothing deleted. I’d love to see A Salty Dog reissued with extra CDs, as it really is a wonderful album. I’d also like to see the Edmonton Concert as a three cd set, though.

I always think of Gary Brooker as a fairly-together guy, and that the Procol material should undergo a proper, structured reissue programme. Quite what went wrong with Salvo is beyond me, but if someone could explain, I’d be happy.

    • Phil Cohen says:

The “Procol Harum” material is under two ownerships. The first four albums(and the singles & outtakes from that period) are owned by “Bucks Music”(A.K.A. “Fly Records” & “Cube Records”). In the 1960’s, these recordings were released in the Uk on EMI/Regal Zonophone. The “Bucks Music” recordings by “Procol Harum” & “The Move” have indeed been taken off the “Salvo” label.
The “Procol Harum” albums from “Broken Barricades” through “Something Magic” are owned by Gary Brooker via “Strongman Productions”. These recordings are still under license to “Salvo”

I would expect Procol Harum’s “A Salty Dog” & “Home” albums to also be reissued by “Esoteric”. And I wouldn’t be surprised if “Bucks Music” also licenses the first three albums by “The Move” to “Esoteric” as well.

  10. Dave says:

My question exactly Thomas and thanks Phil for giving us the answer. I had always wondered about that split between the first four and the rest over the various reissues over the years. Another thing I struggle to get my head round is why Broken Barricades was out of print for much of the nineties when its one of the greatest albums ever!

  11. Thomas Casagranda says:

Can I express my gratitude to Phil for answering my query.

I noticed a peculiar anomaly as the recent Inside/outside Salvo compilation had studio material from Broken Barricades to Something Magic. The live material on disc 2 went from Edmonton up to recent, post 1991, reunions. AWSOP, Salty Dog, Shine On Brightly, were post-Cube recordings. I already have the Salvo reissues, from the first album, up to Procol’s Ninth.

Now that I am enlightened over the split concerning the first four, I am still pondering some imponderables; will there ever be a 3cd set of the Edmonton gigs, or will we just have the 1cd Salvo, with just the three bonus tracks ? I’m sure Procol and the orchestra recorded many more tracks at that gig.

I also think there could be a Procol box set, entitled the Trower years, which could be limited to both studio and live sessions with Robin Trower.

    • Phil says:

I don’t know how much of the Edmonton gig was recorded. It should be remembered that the few Edmonton outtakes that have surfaced were from a pre-concert soundcheck. And also, there was some dissatisfaction by Gary Brooker with the choir on the gig, whom Brooker found to be “an amateur choir”.

And, it may well be that certain tapes by Procol Harum may still be held by Universal Music(whose “A&M” & “Deram” labels once released “Procol Harum” recordings in some territories) and may not be available to Gary Brooker or “Bucks Music”

  12. Phil Cohen says:

I’ve purchased the 3-CD “Procol Harum-Shine on Brightly”, and it sounds superb, has the correct tape speed, and attractive packaging, however, things don’t look good for the “Esoteric” label 2-CD release of “Procol Harum”(debut album). Amazon.co.uk has contacted me to announce yet another postponement(the second) for this 2-CD set; from 29th June to 10th of July to 17th of July. This doesn’t bode well for the other Procol Harum expanded editions that the “Esoteric” label was planning.

    • DaveM says:

      Hi Phil,
I just got SOB 3CD and the packaging is really nice as you say. Going to have a first listen this weekend but sounds like I will not be disappointed.
