Ray Davies / new album Americana

Ray Davies returns in April with Americana, his first solo album in 10 years.

The 15-track long-player shares the name of his 2013 autobiography and when the Kinks frontman spoke to Billboard back in early 2015, he told them he’d penned “100 some songs with that I need to start recording” for the this very album.

Americana is co-produced with Guy Massey and John Jackson and like the book, is very much an autobiographical work. Indeed it includes a number of short spoken-word passages from Davies’ memoir. Americana also features a duet with The Jayhawks’ Karen Grotberg.

Americana will be issued on CD and 2LP vinyl on 21 April 2017.

Great news, I have been listening to Village Green, Arthur, Showbiz, Muswell Hillbillies, Lola vs Powerman almost exclusively for months…total genius.

Amazon’s listing has the release date as 21st April (which is a Friday) and not April 15th (which is a Saturday)

That is great news to be seeing another Ray Davies album, Working Man’s Café was a fantastic album. The interesting thing about about Working Man’s Café is that many of the songs are from real life stories that can read about in Americana. So interesting that this album will be called American give that the last one seemed to be so strongly tied to the book. Perhaps it’s a reflection of the controversial presidential selection. Ray has always had political and social commentary weaved through his songs in an untypical manor.
If you haven’t read the book or heard Working Man’s Café I strongly suggest that you do both. Ray is an interesting writer, this one is a bit more strait forward then his book X-Ray but still not your standard autobiography.

I look forward to you getting us more details on the new album as they come Paul. As always thanks for the great updates.

Working Man’s Café is a great album, so really looking forward to this release.

  5. Ollie Carlisle says:

Brilliant. I saw Ray do a few of these songs at Union Chapel in 2014 and they sounded great. Spoke to him around the same time and asked when the album would be out and he said it would be the Spring. Should’ve asked which year!

  6. Richie says:

I’ve never held out much hope for a Kinks reunion I think if it did happen it would end tears. And on that happy note can I say that I love Ray’s solo albums and the release of a new album is great news.

  7. AlexKx says:

    I’m ready for Kinks reunion!!!

  8. HalloweenJack says:

I’m also very much ready for a Kinks reunion! :D

If Ray and Dave do actually come to the point where they share a stage again you can probably keep your coat on and get your egg-timer out…

Sadly they still seem to make the Gallagher brothers look like the epitome of brotherly love by comparison. I think it’s what you call a complex relationship.

Still, looking forward to this album. ‘Other People’s Lives’ had some good songs too; particular soft spot for ‘Things Are Gonna Change (The Morning After)’s rocking mix of regret and resolution. Nice one, Ray.

Great news and great price – Surely that Kinks back catalogue should be due a vinyl re-release?

  10. Bruce nicholson says:

Martin – there is the mono vinyl box set which came out before Christmas which includes the first 8 albums plus a live album and a compilation album.

  11. Greg Viner says:

Can hardly wait hope he tours in support of it. Great cover too Ray loves his sunsets

  12. Daniel Wylie says:

Just read that The Jayhawks are his backing band on this new album. That will make it even more interesting as The Jayhawks are a great band in their own right.

  13. Dockofthebay says:

Just came to leave the Jayhawks comment but someone beat me to it! They are backing Ray on the album:
