Ry Cooder / 1970-1987 box set

albumcollection

Rhino will release an eleven-disc Ry Cooder box set on 11 November 2013.

As the title suggests, 1970-1987 collects the American musician’s solo albums over a 17 year period (the Warner era), starting with his 1970 eponymous debut and calling a halt at 1987’s Get Rhythm.

Expect the usual no-frills approach with vinyl replica card sleeves, housed in a clamshell box, with no booklet(s).

This is must have box set. I will buy this in my local record shops. It’s cheaper than amazon. For example ZZ Top box set in my local record shop cost only 20,54 pounds (189 HRK – Croatia). Same thing is happen with ‘The Smiths ‘ box set – only 27 pounds (around 25o HRK). Randy Crawford – 5 albums – under 10 pounds (89 HRK)…

I’m not familiar with his albums however I do like these compact style box sets as long as the sound quality is good. Some from Rhino and other labels sound great but I’ve also noticed that sound quality can vary on some of the albums in these sets and some sound great while others don’t.

Marko, When you buy a copy of this and have a chance to listen to it, can you post your thoughts concerning sound quality?

As far as sound quality goes…these sound exceptionally good three titles appear to be remastered from wht I’ve read while the remainder from the set are Lee Herschberg (and others) original mastering(unless a title was secretly remastered). They are nice and dynamic.

Packaging is nice as well with Into the Purple Valley in a replica of the original gatefold sleeve. I do wish (and have written to Rhino about this) that they had included a booklet with the credits and some info on the making of each album (even the brief three or two paragraph descriptions that were in the original booklets for some of these would be fine).

I ended up creating one myself.
