Singles soundtrack deluxe edition

The soundtrack to Cameron Crowe’s 1992 film Singles – which focused on the grunge scene of the early 1990s – is to be reissued as a two-CD deluxe edition and a 2LP+CD set in February next year.

The original soundtrack features 13 songs from various artists, including Alice In Chains, Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam, and The Smashing Pumpkins.

The new deluxe edition (which has been rumoured for a long time) adds 18 tracks to this, including much more from Chris Cornell and Paul Westerberg, as well as tracks like Truly’s Heart and Lungs – a song that is featured in the original film but apparently pulled at the last minute from the final soundtrack. The band – who were on Sub Pop at the time – claim this was “due to pressure from various managers to add more songs from the other major label artists.”

Truly’s “Heart and Lungs” makes it to the deluxe version of Singles

The double vinyl edition of the Singles soundtrack includes the bonus CD from the two-CD deluxe edition (great price right now on Amazon UK).

Singles deluxe edition will be released on 19 May 2017.

Are the versions of the songs on the second disc which are also on the first disc live tracks or demos? No sign of REM or John Coltrane who were also in the movie…

  2. Paolo says:

**** Is it remastered or simply expanded? I have the original CD in my Smashing Pumpkins collection and, as far as I know, the track that’s featured here was included in their ‘Gish’ deluxe reissue in an alternative take, so technically a remastered version of the original is still missing. In such case I’d be tempted to upgrade to this new edition. ****

  3. Friso Pas says:

Yes, Birth Ritual on vinyl! Love that track.

  4. Jonathan says:

That’s great news, since the original vinyl pressing is grotesquely expensive on secondary markets i will definitely purchase the 3LP vinyl edition.
Many thanks for posting and happy new year to everyone!!

  5. Simon Taylor says:

I have the original vinyl and cd although at 65 minutes it should’ve been released as double vinyl. Nice price for the triple, will put a pre-order in but may cancel dependent on what’s included.

I guess there’s no info on whether download code will be included? That’s now becoming an annoyance that so many vinyl releases have one but others don’t. I think it should be all or nothing really or at least advertise that one is included as does sometimes affect what format I choose to purchase on as do want mp3 for my ipod.

  6. Mark R says:

Great soundtrack. Love Chris Cornell’s ‘Seasons’ and early demo of ‘Spoonman’. Mother Love Bone’s ‘Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns’ is also excellent. I’m going to go with the 2x CD for this.

  7. Robert says:

One of the better soundtracks of the decade. I like the Paul Westerberg
songs on this- and for awhile I think this was the only place to get them.
A good , but brief, overview of the grunge sound .

  8. Paul English says:

The original vinyl sound quality was awful.

    • Simon Taylor says:

That’s the 65 mins on single vinyl. I bought my copy fairly cheap, less than £20 and still mint but there should never be more than 45 mins on single vinyl. Jeez, 65 mins for single vinyl Singles original pressing, 66 mins for Exile on Main Street. At least its going from single to triple vinyl.

      • Paul English says:

@ Simon Taylor, yes – loads of LPs from the early 90s had 60+ minutes on one piece of vinyl. Some dreadful sounding albums e.g.
De La Soul – 3 Feet High And Rising
        Anthrax – Persistence Of Time
        Lou Reed – New York
        Neil Young – Unplugged
Public Enemy – Fear Of A Black Planet
        Alice In Chains – Dirt
        Soundgarden – Badmotorfinger

Of course, the labels didn’t give a toss and it was all part of their plan to phase out the format – by offering a substandard option and refusing to accept returns from the shops

  9. BobG says:

I really like this sound track and have been waiting for the vinyl on this one but looking at the track listing on the Amazon UK site, the way it’s listed seems to indicate that the original release will be across 2 vinyl and then the third (previously unreleased songs) will be on a CD based on how it’s presented (Disc 1-4, I would think are “Sides”):

  10. Johnny Feathers says:

I loved this soundtrack–great primer on the Seattle “grunge” scene, and my intro to Smashing Pumpkins.

That said, it’s very much of-its-time for me, and rarely revisited except when I’m feeling nostalgic. Can’t say I have much interest in a deluxe version in 2017.

  11. Charles K. says:

I never understood why they didn’t exclude theHendrix and include the Citizen Dick song, it was certainly a more original artifact from the movie. Either way this makes up for all and I’m definitely getting it!

  12. Steve Burke says:

The soundtrack has been remastered and unfortunately pretty heavy-handed dynamic range compression has been applied. The 24-bit remaster from Epic Soundtrax was made available through some of the usual online high resolution retailers and I took a chance on the 24/192 download from Acoustic Sounds (they confirmed the files were sent from Sony) – there is no sonic info above 48kHz in the download so if anyone else is looking at it, save the coin and just buy the 24/96 version.

    Original CD – DR 12 – http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/27946
    Remastered 24/192 – DR 7 – http://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/119262

There is no doubt in my mind the 24/192 files will be the source for the vinyl album cuts but would love to hear more info if Paul is able to get it.

Yes I am aware that the DR score isn’t the only consideration when it comes to sound quality, but the tracks by Pearl Jam, MLB, SG, AiC, all suffer pretty considerably. The orignal sounds better cranked to me, the remaster sounds better converted to 16/44.1 and burned to a CD-R in my car where I’m listening with lots of ambient background noise.

Amazon UK changed the release date to May 19th.
