Steve Miller Band / Complete Albums Volume 1: 1968-1976 / 9LP vinyl box

Last year’s Ultimate Hits offering was the initial project that marked the start of a new Steve Miller Band licensing deal with Capitol Records/UMe and this continues in May with Vinyl Box Set Volume 1 (1968-1976), a set that brings together the group’s first nine studio albums in a 9LP vinyl box.

It has been fifty years since the first two Capitol Records albums (Children of the Future and Sailor) were issued in 1968 and this new set features newly remastered audio (by Steve Miller and Kent Hertz)

As well as those two records, this new set features 1969’s Brave New World (which features Space Cowboy and the Macca-assisted My Dark Hour), Your Saving Grace (1969), Number 5 (1970), Rock Love (1971), Recall The Beginning… (1972), and The Joker (1973). The latter’s success paved the way for 1976’s Fly Like An Eagle and Book of Dreams from ’77.

Vinyl Box Set Volume 1 (1968-1976) will be released on 18 May 2018. The albums are also available individually (not everything is listed, yet) and there are some limited coloured vinyl pressings available at certain retailers (the box is only black vinyl).

Ordered from AMAZON.CO.UK. Interesting, the download contains everything as WAV files, and according to RECALL THE BEGINNING, you’ll get both versions of A JOURNEY FROM EDEN, the original 6:37 PLUS the remixed alternate version 3:43 which is on vinyl.

  2. Phil Vellender says:

Oh and a PS: the early Capitol albums aren’t in a box. They come with no inserts or extras. The latter I can live without, but some nice contextualisation or photos would not have gone amiss. This is an expensive yet bare minimum release. I would have bought individually had I known how pusillanimous Miller’s team were going to be with his long term fans.

    Steve Miller reissue:
Recall the Beginning a Journey Through Eden
    My review:
‘I bought the remastered colour vinyl reissues with ‘joy in my heart’. I held off listening to his 7th release, Recall the Beginning a Journey Through Eden, until last because, for entirely obscure reasons, this classic record was not put out with the first 5 on CD.

Imagine my horror when, having spent a lot of my hard earned cash, I flip side 2 on of this fabulous record and then settle in to listen to the final eponymous track only to find it has been butchered.

The original six minute plus masterpiece is a truncated, bawlderised 3:44 version which makes no lyrical sense, the dramatic thrust of this dark extraordinary anthem is entirely lost.

This horror is compounded by the axing of the brilliant ensemble playing. Who ideated this nonsense? Why not screw up one of the lesser tracks, ‘Welcome Maurice’ for example. Worse still, and this is verging on commercial misrepresentation, the lyrics are still reproduced complete, as on the original.

I have waited 40 years plus for this release. I feel completely ripped off and very angry.’

    • Phil Vellender says:

      Erratum: Enter not Welcome Maurice!

    • Marjet says:

One reason why I hesitate to pre-order the upcoming Recall The Beginning CD reissue, is the fact that I’m affraid that it also contains the edited version of ‘Journey of Eden’. That would be a hugh dissapointment. Sorry to hear you feel ripped off.

  4. Robert says:

I know that vinyl is more collectable these days. But they shouldn’t threat people who collect CD’s different from vinyl collectors. So why not a similar boxset for people who want these albums on CD.

  5. Wes says:

Paul, is it possible for you to let us know where these records are going to be pressed? Do you get this info or is it kept secret prior to release? These days it’s getting pretty easy to predict the quality of a release by where it was pressed. Pallas/Optimal/QRP/MPO usually equals decent to excellent quality while GZ Media, Rainbo, United usually equals subpar quality. Not knowing where makes buying the set much more of a gamble.

    • Phil Vellender says:

Some have CK or CZ on the cover in tiny writing. So Czech Republic might be one answer.

  6. Dann says:

This should also include Book Of Dreams. They used the artwork image for the cover of the box set. It would neatly wrap up his career through the 70s.

  7. ProgRox says:

If they use the same clowns who pressed the Ultimate Hits set (the USA one at any rate), I’d avoid like the plague. I’ve never seen such horrible looking vinyl right out of the sleeve. Loads of scratches, pits, waves, etc…

Nice poly inners though, so there’s that…

  8. Philip Cohen says:

When Steve Miller signed a licensing deal with Capitol last year, it was stated that Capitol would have unlimited access to Miller’s personal archive of audio, video & memorabilia, and the contract seemed to get off to a good start with the 2-CD set “Ultimate Hits”, whose previously unreleased live and studio tracks seemed to be a preview of further archival projects and deluxe editions to come, but then, what do we get? Verbatim vinyl reissues. Whether they will be pressed by Capitol’s pressing plant of choice (Rainbo Records in Los Angeles) or Universal Music’s European pressing plant of choice(GZ Vinyl in the Czech Republic) they will be poorly pressed.
As for following through with further CD archival projects after pocketing Capitol’s money, it is apparent that Steve Miller decided to “Take The Money and Run”.

  9. Rich Z says:

    correction for Universal pre-order info:
the box set is priced at $197 at usUdiscover store.
the bundle with tote bag ($250) is for the 9 color vinyl editions (without box).

  10. Rich Z says:

The email I received fro Universal yesterday announcing Steve Miller Band tour with Peter Frampton also contained this info and direct pre-order option for the box and individual albums, including color vinyl individual discs — as well as HD digital downloads.

    Pre-Order: Complete Albums Volume 1 (1968-1976)

Nine of Steve Miller Band’s albums will be made available in an unprecedented new 180g vinyl box set, spanning the band’s 1968 first studio album
Children Of the Future through 1976’s multiplatinum masterpiece Fly Like an Eagle.

    Albums include:
    Children Of The Future
    Sailor
    Brave New World
    Your Saving Grace
    Number 5
    Rock Love
Recall The Beginning…A Journey From Eden
    The Joker
    Fly Like an Eagle

All the albums in Complete Albums Volume 1 have been remastered for this box set, and each LP is also available for pre-order individually. All will be released on the same date on 180g black vinyl, as well as limited edition 180g color vinyl for sale exclusively via US.uDiscoverMusic.com.

Universal announced also the HD 96/24 digital release of Children Of The Future via HDTracks immediately, to be followed by the HD digital release of each of the 9 albums – one per week – leading up to the May 2018 release of the vinyl editions.

Book of Dreams they’re apparently holding over to a future Volume 2 (unannounced) set. and the usuDiscover store is now accepting pre-orders for the color vinyl individual albums from Volume 1 ($30 each, vs. $25 for black vinyl) and the black vinyl box set bundled with exclusive tote bag ($199).

  11. Stephen K says:

If these came with a digital download of the tracks, this would be the best Steve Miller Band news in decades. I hope there’s a similar CD release in the future.

  12. James says:

Yawn. More vinyl. Suppose it’s too much to ask in 2018 for a CD version. Fed up of this overpriced digitally remastered analog nonsense.

    • Jimmy says:

Who wants to buy all these again on CD when Edsel released all these albums on CD a few years back?

    • Jaypfunk says:

      Yawn. More Vinyl bashing.

      CDs suck, get over it.

      • Philip Cohen says:

If the vinyl is from Rainbo Records or GZ vinyl, it deserves bashing. Those records’ only useful purpose is as a frisbee.
And CD’s only “Suck” when the record companies intentionally sabotage their sound quality with “Loudness Wars” processing.

  13. eric Slangen says:

So maybe on this board is there someone who wants to swap or don’t need the box?
    Mail me at snake@home.nl

    Eric

  14. eric Slangen says:

So I first have to buy the box for the box only then sell those black albums and then buy the colored one to get my perfect box.
