The Cure’s Mixed Up and Torn Down confirmed on 2LP black vinyl

As well as the triple CD deluxe edition (announced yesterday) The Cure have confirmed that the Mixed Up and Torn Down remix compilations (being issued as picture discs for RSD) will both be released on black vinyl in June.

These will be half-speed mastered pressings, mastered by Robert Smith and Tim Young at Metropolis Studios.

Mixed Up was originally issued in 1990 and as he approached the project, Smith realised that some of The Cure’s earlier remixes didn’t stand up to the newer ones.

Robert singles out Brian ‘Chuck’ New’s dub style remix of Pictures Of You as the one that inspired him to take a more adventurous path: “That mix turned the music on its head, but at the same time left the essential heart of the song intact. As soon as I heard it, I updated the entire Mixed Up plan. My revised ambition was to compile an album that was contemporary without being dated, immediate without being obvious, musically inspiring, rhythmically exciting and sonically great!”

As most fans are aware two tracks on the album, A Forest and The Walk, were re-recorded entirely, as the multi-track tapes for both songs had long been lost.

For the Torn Down: Mixed Up Extras 2018 album Smith originally thought that it would be “Cure songs re-mixed by choice artists, rather than by choice re-mixers… that then got me thinking maybe I should have a go at one… so in early August 2017, I decided to experiment with Three Imaginary Boys. It is a pretty sparse multi-track; I pulled it apart at home and finished the initial re-mix in one session – and I really enjoyed the whole process”.

Interestingly, the self portrait cover of Torn Down was originally intended as the sleeve for Mixed Up. Another thing worth noting is that while both Mixed Up and Torn Down are available on 2LP, disc two – “Remixes 1982-1990” in the three CD set is exclusive to CD and isn’t being issued on vinyl at all.

The 3CD deluxe set, and both 2LP vinyl releases are out on 15 June 2018.

  1. Gary Anderko says:

Robert Smith mentioned in liner notes that Primary, Lovecats & Inbetween Days remastered Extended Versions that didn’t make remix cd would be available digitally. Any idea where and when?

  2. John Kearns says:

Just got the deluxe version in the mail today. I was reading the liner notes and RS said:

”’The three that “got away” (albeit available in digital format) are Primary (extended mix 1981 – remastered 2018 – basically it’s a 7″ instrumental mix cut into the 7″ single mix – I don’t think either me or Mike Hedges were very much into this ‘remix’ ideas at the time.” The Lovecats (extended version 1983 – remastered 2018) – “not really a remix”…this is actually the mix of the original recording – it was simply edited down a bit for the 7′ single release; and Inbetween Days (extended version 1985 – remastered 2018) – “this was extended by person or persons unknown but they obviously had a razor blade and were determined to use it! Only released in North America – I can honestly say I had nothing to do with it…”’

I have no idea what he’s talking about regarding these three versions. I don’t see them available digitally anywhere and it’s not included in the digital format for this deluxe version. If anyone can shed some insight would be greatly appreciated as I would love to purchase all three remastered tracks.

    Thanks!

    • Neil says:

The Lovecats (extended version 1983) is on Retro:Active6 (Rare & Remixed) Inbetween Days (extended version 1985) is on Retro:Active4 (Rare & Remixed) There are no 2018 remasters of these tracks and Primary (extended mix 1981) has never been released digitally.

      • John says:

Neil – I understand that regarding the three tracks but as I said before RS specifically said in the liner notes of the Mixed Up expanded CD set that they have remastered those three extended remixes. I simply asking the group here if this is true and if anyone has seen it online to purchase.

  3. Grant says:

I believe I heard it mentioned that the RSD ‘Torn Down’ vinyl would have a download code. My (USA) version doesn’t seem to. Anyone?

  4. paul says:

    • paul says:

was already available on CD on 1987 UK CD Video 080 180-2

[we can rip it from the Greatest Hits DVD but all fans do not know how to do that]

by the way, 4 different acetates of “Why Can’t I Be You?” were cut, with various 7inch mixes, why can’t we get them too?

from the same source (GH bonus web site), where are “Let’s Go To Bed (1982 ‘Duke’ Remix)” and “Wrong Number (1997 The 16b Crossed Line ‘Warm Vocal’ Mix)”?
plus, needless to say, I suspect other songs were remixed, not used and shelved when “Mixed up” were being prepared back in 1990?

  6. Renato says:

I’m still waiting for the last three Fiction albums to be remastered. Wish is the only one I really… well, wish () to buy, but I’ll end up buying Wild Mood Swings and Bloodflowers just to complete my remasters collection. Wasn’t really expecting Mixed Up to be rereleased at all, to be honest, even though I read an interview with Robert Smith in which he said he planned to remaster it (years ago, so I thought it was shelved). Gonna buy it anyway, even if it’s definitely the least essential of their albums.

  7. Jonathan Robert Muirhead says:

Hi guys. Do we know if the 3 CD will be available on iTunes?

  8. Gary henn says:

Great idea to let real fans know that these are being issued, on black vinyl (better) and after RSD (mania). Mr Sylvian take note re: Dead Bees….

  9. Steve says:

After a couple of fallow months following purchasing frequently from Paul’s updates during 2017 I was concerned that he might be losing his touch. No more! Thanks for this update, Paul, it’s much appreciated.

  10. Ken.e says:

These are instant purchases for me. I picked up the last two Greatest Hits on vinyl and both were great. These are a bit more interesting to me as I always thought the Cure were great on 12″ extended and Mixed up was a fantastic compilation.
Looking forward to the Amazon.ca links.

  11. Wes Headley says:

Lana Del Rey and the Cure in the same breath? Why not? She’s excellent, as is the Cure. Now maybe mentioning the Cure and Bon Jovi in the same breath, that might might be approaching the heretical.

  12. Mihael says:

Apart the obvious troll from your comment, i was clearly speaking about packaging not music. Everybody is free to like any kind of music.

  13. Michael says:

and the wish album is on the way… i know my english is not perfect but Robert Smith says something about the fact that the remaster of the Wish album is done. (at 2min.33 > BBC radio itw https://youtu.be/Rz-ZKCQJcf4

  14. Tom M says:

“Remixes 1982-1990” in the three CD set is exclusive to CD and isn’t being issued on vinyl at all.
With the exception of “Why Can’t I Be You?” (Extended Mix 1987 – 2018 remaster) ?

  15. DJ Control says:

I’ve been secretly pining for a 12” mix compilation from The Cure and disc 2 in the cd set has most of what I was wishing for. The RS remixes will be interesting too, I’m always curious when an artist revisits their back catalogue, some can’t even stand listening to the past let alone remixing it.

  16. Mike the Fish says:

Mixed up certainly needed remastering. Hope it sounds good!

  17. Kyle Gedge says:

Too bad the vinyl doesn’t include the tracks on disc 2 of the deluxe CD.

  18. ed says:

the good news with this is this means if u dont want a picture disc or to queue to get this you dont have to! whilst its not a surprise this is getting a normal release it seems odd to do this before record store day, still im sure they will still sell out the RSD editions

    • probablyrustin says:

RSD is this month, these come out in June.

      • ed says:

Yes I know RSD is this month, the point being it seems to take the shine away from the RSD release as its coming out anyway. Normally RSD releases that get re-released are announced after RSD has been and gone like the David Bowie Live album alst year for example

  19. Mihael says:

So cool. Maybe one day there will be a kind of box with all 4 discs. Like the Lana del Rey paradise édition.
