The Jimi Hendrix Experience / 8LP vinyl

Sony will issue for the first time (in Europe) a vinyl edition of The Jimi Hendrix Experience box set – also known as ‘The Purple Box’ – at the end of this week.

This eight-LP set was originally released on CD in 2000 (as has been reissued on CD a few times since), and presents previously unreleased concert and studio recordings which span Hendrix’s four year career from 1966-1970.

Beginning with the first known recordings of the Jimi Hendrix Experience in October 1966 to his final multi-track recording session at Electric Lady Studios in August 1970, this box set concentrates on previously unreleased or commercially unavailable music.

This vinyl set contains the original 56 tracks – there is no bonus material. It comes with a large format booklet and is released on 27 October 2017. Very good price of just under £90 in Germany, at the time of writing.

Not first time as I have the original velvet-box.
They must have changed the material from velvet to paper to this new edition?

    • Paul Sinclair says:

Was that issued in the UK? Wondering if this is the first time outside USA?

      • Sam says:

Yep, that must be it that it’s the first time released in Europe.
Also, this has been hard to find on vinyl as new for some time or so..
I think I got this for pretty good price from AmazonUSA by the time when “West Coast Seattle Boy” and “Winterland” vinyl-boxsets came around aswell..

  2. AFGreenwood says:

Ha! this reminded me to buy the CD version which I had forgotten about.

  3. Mark Wita says:

Do we know where the vinyl was pressed?

  4. Paul Wren says:

Ni, it was available in the UK originally at about £60 as I remember looking at it on the wall behind the counter in HMV Peterborough at the time. And no, I didn’t buy it much to my everlasting regret.
Originally 5,000 velvet box copies, still available via Ebay etc in mint condition at about £120 which is the same as current UK new release. I can’t believe that the new reissue will fetaure the velvet box.

    I own the original US 8lp 180 gram version (2000 release) ….

  6. vinyl junkie says:

Paul W – not sure what version you saw at Peterborough HMV, but it never got a UK release on vinyl, according to Discogs, just two US releases (one in the Velvet box, one standard). As far as I remember, I bought mine from Audiophile USA when it was released.

  7. Bought the original 8LP version at Rhino Records in L.A. when it first came out. They were the last place around with the vinyl and I had to drive an hour in traffic to get it. (That is, barely 20 miles from where I lived in “the Valley”.)

JPC.DE also have it for 99 euro. Very good packaging with this company.

And, if you’re a Duane Allman fan, they have the Skydog vinyl box set for 360 euro which is a very good price for that box set. I bought it from them for 400 and I thought I was doing well!

  10. Randy Metro says:

One of the few times that I wish I had a turntable. I would be happy to just sit and stare at the packaging. Gloria (and Angel) may be one of my all time faves by Hendrix. Also love the Doors version of Gloria. Naughty, naughty song.

  11. Mychael says:

The big question though is – will the new release of the box have the original tracks? When Sony reissued the original MCA CD box on Legacy they replaced a few tracks with different versions.

  12. madman says:

This is a fantastic collection. I have one of the CD versions and I never get tired of listening to it. If you’re a Hendrix fan, you need to get this.

Good they’re re issuing this although you can find an original sealed first press from 2000 for around the same price….
