These Dreams Will Never Sleep: The Best Of Graham Parker 1976-2015

Relive Graham Parker’s four decades in the music business with this career-spanning reissue from Universal Music that covers both his years with The Rumour and his solo output.

These Dreams Will Never Sleep: The Best Of Graham Parker 1976-2015 includes 90 tracks across six CDs, a compilation live DVD, a 36-page hardcover book featuring a new interview with Parker and an overview written by Holly A. Hughes, plus a poster and three postcards.

Following their critically-acclaimed debut album Howlin’ Wind, Graham Parker & The Rumour enjoyed some chart success in the late Seventies and early Eighties, peaking with their last album before Parker branched out on his own – The Up Escalator (1980, which, tellingly, was credited only to Parker on the cover) reached number 11 in the UK and tip-toed into the Top 40 Stateside. The previous album, Squeezing Out Sparks (1979) charted on both sides of the pond), is often held up as Parker’s finest, gaining a slot at number 335 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time list. While his albums since have not had such commercial clout, Parker has enjoyed a long and productive solo career, and he reunited with The Rumour to make Three Chords Good, the first of two new albums together, in 2012.

The first three CDs in this set are anthology discs consisting mainly of studio recordings, plus four solo acoustic demos and four live performances with The Rumour. This is followed a disc of live BBC recordings – at Hammersmith Odeon, 1979, plus a handful of songs for the BBC Sight And Sound in Concert series in 1977 – and, for the first time, a recording Parker’s last-ever gig with The Rumour (and horn section) at London’s Forum which is spread across two CDs.

The 34-track DVD kicks off with a previously unreleased 21-song set, Live at The Brook, Southampton, in 2015 with The Rumour, and a selection of late-Seventies TV performances on Top Of The Pops and the Old Grey Whistle Test completes a substantive audio-visual offering for Parker fans.

These Dreams Will Never Sleep: The Best Of Graham Parker 1976-2015 is released on 30 September 2016. Decent pre-order price from Amazon UK.

  1. Chucky says:

One small correction…Squeezing Out Sparks is from 1979, not 1970.

  2. Richard Harris says:

Also available to order from Graham’s own website with initial quantities signed by him. Actual price from official site is similar to Amazon UK although p&p makes it slightly more expensive.

Only disappointment for me on the track selection is the omission of the wonderful “Temporary Beauty”.

    • Tom says:

I would have thought “Temporary Beauty” and “Life Gets Better” would have been shoo ins for the compilation side of this package however given the reception it gets when performed live, “Local Girls” being passed over is a real surprise. Then again there isn’t a bad track on “Squeezing Out Sparks” so I suppose the line gets drawn somewhere when compiling such a package.

  3. Dean says:

I was initially a little harsh about this set. Actually it’s not bad, and the live material bumps it up considerably.

It’s worth nothing though – all of major albums are being reissued as single disc releases too, some with bonus tracks (though nothing we haven’t heard before). As far as I can tell, they’re coming on both CD and Vinyl.

So while this set isn’t as bad as I have suggested in the past, I think I may well just double-dip on the album releases, since I don’t think the guy writes a bad song.

  4. Robert says:

Very nice. Even though he’s had collections released before I don’t know if any of them covered all the labels he’s been on so this makes it worth it for that.

  5. Jim Horan says:

I am not the HUGEST Graham fan, but this set sound like an interesting one…it’s not purporting to be a greatest hits package, so it’s for the fan that HAS all the original albums, but wants more cool stuff!!

  6. Greg says:

There are weeks that I only listen to Graham Parker CDs. He is without question one of my 5 favorite artists. I even bought a signed copy or this set which cost me (due to shipping to the US and no VAT refund) about $25 more than getting it from Amazon UK. Half of this set duplicates what I already have but I want the other half for listening, not collecting, you can never go wrong with Graham Parker music. My personal preference is his first 6 albums and the live material from that period, which is well represented in this set, but there are many gems thereafter. One would have to be a martian not to enjoy this set.

  7. Stevieb says:

    Why a martian?

  8. Greg says:

A martian is a humanoid creature without a soul. I should not have to tell anyone on this website that it don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing, you silly thing.

  9. Lorne says:

I’ll be keeping an eye out for a major price drop, as just noticed they’re using my pictures for the cover of CD 5 and 6.
I did get paid (!) and knew they were being used for something, but wasn’t sure what!

Too expensive for me currently though, even though it looks a good set.

Amazon Denmark looks a good deal, would it be an English language version?

  12. Keith Wright says:

Looks to be cancelled at that price, just got messgae from Amazon germany.

  13. John Blutarski says:

Yep. Order got deleted by Amazon, because of the price…

  14. John Blutarski says:

Can anybody remember what teh price was, before it was deleted by Amazon Germany? The deleted order was deleted also from my history of stuff I bought.
