FIRST PICTURES / Miles Davis: Bitches Brew repackage

front

Out this week is Sony’s repackaging of Miles Davis‘ 1970 album Bitches Brew. This is effectively the 40th anniversary content minus the vinyl records, so you get 3CD+DVD in a nifty ‘bookset’ format. Check out an SDE photo gallery below to view the new presentation.

What’s with the ridiculous price (£130) on Amazon UK, Paul, compared to the other countries?

  2. Neil Wilkes says:

Why is the Quad mix not included?

  3. Fergus Carmichael says:

It was £19.99 on uk amazon 3 or 4 days ago stan.
Suddenly it rocketed . Price gouging to fleece a few unsuspecting souls as its release was imminent . Cynical dogs!!!

    • Andreas says:

Back to 25 quid. Assume an error? Poor soul who paid 130 for it a mere day ago (although I’m sure amazon would refund)!

  4. Roel Glas says:

Grooves-inc.com have it for a little under 16 Euro. Bargain!

    • Fergus Carmichael says:

That’s not for the 4 disc set Roel.
That’s for the single album version only.

That Amazon price (£130) must be a mistake, but this is Amazon we are talking about. But in the market place you can get it for less than £12 which is more than likely less than the Amazon price will be when they rectify it.

Being a new convert in a way to jazz and Miles Davis, course I`ve heard stuff before, I`ve taken a leap of faith and ordered the S.E. with the LP from Amazon Italy for less than £47. Bitches Brew is an album I am familiar with, much more `rocky`, I remember there was a lot of flack fired in MD`s direction at the time for releasing a `non-jazz` LP. Sounds good to me.

Two comments Paul and I hope you don’t mind. One relates to your product photography. I have to say that the plain white backgrounds you use to use at the beginning were a lot cleaner. I’m not a fan of the white foam for a background. Otherwise the detail you present in your photos is great, especially for someone who will not purchase the particular physical product, but would like a closer look anyway.
Second comment relates to the physical state of the items you often show in this blog. I’ve noticed lately that many items have slight dents or bends in a corner, something that I’m sure many collectors find extremely annoying. I too have found a lot of products arriving in the mail have a little damage, especially from Amazon. They often place large items in a box and simply stuff some paper on top of it, hoping that nothing will happpen in transit.

Amazon also squeeze cardboard cover CD digipacks into the wholly unsuitable narrow slim envelopes, which always results in the spine being creased. Plenty of my deluxe set orders have been replaced due to that at their expense.

      • Stan Butler says:

Well said Jim. Why can’t Amazon use suitable boxes for deluxe issues? I’ve also had to return CDs due to creased spines. I remember HMV and Play.com (when they were alternatives to Amazon) used decent sized boxes.

Excellent points! The quality of the photographs on SDE, in terms of detail, is still amazing. I enjoy just looking at those sometimes even if I have no intention of buying them either, as with the new Yes boxset. But I can’t help wincing at any signs of damage!

If anything’s damaged from Amazon, I always return it. They should take more care with the way they package and post things (I’ve also noticed more cases of leaving the item somewhere, and not even trying to find out if someone’s in).

Thanks for the feedback. I agree it’s annoying about small nicks and dinks etc. This is the one area where going into a shop and buying product offers an advantage.

  7. Fabry65 says:

Got it fir some 17€ from amazon.de. On the shelf already!

  8. Grimble says:

now £24.99 on Amazon, although a lot of third party sellers have it for around £10!

  9. Ron says:

Thank you for the article. It looks great. The link for the U.S. shows a 2010 edition, though. I will check it again in a few days to see if Amazon updated it to the new version.

  10. Charles Hodgson says:

Never thought to return my Deluxe Digipacks to Amazon ‘cos of damaged spines. Maybe I should “raise my expectations”! I suppose they rely on the majority of customers just accepting that as a risk of the delivery process. Also, those plastic “teeth” which keep the CD’s in place are often broken. Infuriating! If I felt I had to return every one of those I’d be as well moving into my post-office!
What’s worse recently is the new delivery service “Amazon Logistics”. Twice in the past couple of weeks they’ve posted my parcel through a neighbors letterbox. The most recent package was handed to a neighbor and a “you were out” card posted through my letterbox. This despite the fact that:
    1. It was a CD and the package would easily have posted through my letter box.
    2. It was NOT a “signed-for” delivery!
I expect a BBC Watchdog expose shortly. Dolts!

    • Alan says:

Have to agree with you about Amazon logistics, total waste of time. My neighbour is a post office and they will not leave items there. Now have them delivered to my brothers shop as at least there is always someone there. Used to prefer royal mail as if the item didn’t fit the letterbox at least they left a card. Will use dealers more than Amazon now because of this delivery change.

  11. Jim says:

I always thought this was a bit lacking in new content when it was the full size box. But a tenner on Marketplace makes this worthwhile.

A shop near me was doing individual discs from the Complete Columbia Recordings box for £3 singles and £4 doubles. I wish I’d known then that BB from the box was the original mix. I only know the remix.

  12. graeme ewan says:

    16.99 euro on Amazon.de right now, 18.13, 29.05.15. ordered.

  13. Morgan says:

if only the rest could take a lesson from amazon japan with their packaging, theirs is always exemplary

  14. Piotr says:

I was reading through these posts again and realised that Neil Wilkes at the top is right. Where is the Quad mix? Surely if it’s available to “get” as a bootleg it must be in existence. It’s a shame it wasn’t included. Maybe Sony is holding it back for a future release.

  15. ANDREW r says:

On the money with the amazon packaging scandal, the best example the recent Superdeluxe Zeppelin box sets sent out in a large Amazon box with a few strips of paper inside! All went back for refund and i later paid more
to an independent store that shipped correctly. There is a lesson there, but greed and Amazon’s low low prices hook me back in, time after time.
