With only the one greatest hits compilation in the last 29 years, Paul McCartney‘s Pure McCartney is certainly overdue. Leaving off Flowers In The Dirt tracks still rankles, but two-CD will satisfy most, while 4CD deluxe package lacks rarities.

After a busy 2014 with some superb projects with ZTT and Alphaville, Blank & Jones return in the New Year with volume nine of their long running, and now highly regarded, so80s (SoEighties) series. If you are unfamiliar with them, these collect rare, overlooked and often unreleased-on-CD twelve-inch remixes from the 1980s, where possible sourced from the analogue master tapes.

SoEighties presents Alphaville
DJs Blank & Jones continue their long-running so80s (SoEighties) series this October with a new release focusing on German synthpop band Alphaville.
Best remembered for their 1984 hit singles Big In Japan and Forever Young, Alphaville released three albums on the Warner label in the 1980s but like many eighties pop bands struggled to match the success of the early records in the 1990s.

Rob Puricelli reviews Blank & Jones’ ZTT remix album, for SDE.
THE VERY SECOND I SAW THE ARTICLE that announced that Blank & Jones were to attempt a complete album of ZTT remixes, my heart sank. Not because it was Blank & Jones, but because the ZTT canon is, to me (and likely a great many other people), sacrosanct. The songs and the artists are very dear to my heart as many of them formed the soundtrack of my formative years. And when – under different stewardship than the person currently at the helm of ZTT’s wonderful reissues of the past few years – the label put out a set of Frankie remixes in 1993 and again in 2000, I recall my horror at the way these precious stars in my musical firmament had been subjected to the “Boom-Tish” treatment, being dragged, kicking and screaming into a decade of bland and banal dance music, showing no respect for these jewels and the fact that they formed part of the very roots on which their dull, uninspired and unoriginal musical genre was formed.
So I think I can be forgiven for fearing the worst.

Get the scales out because this edition of the Rush 1974 debut is on 200g vinyl and comes in a deluxe box with publicity photos, a Rush ‘Family Tree’ poster and download card. Word on the street is that these are basically sold out, so get it while you can.

WORLD PREMIERE: Listen to the full 10-minute Blank & Jones so80s Reconstruction version of Frankie Goes To Hollywood‘s 1986 single Rage Hard.
The track is one of 13 brand new remixes that have been created only using audio from the original ZTT Records‘ master tapes and compiled on the forthcoming two-CD release so80s presents ZTT which is out on Monday 28 April (full track listing here).

Behind-the-Scenes: Blank & Jones reconstructing “The Power of Love”
Another fascinating video update from Blank & Jones as they work on their forthcoming so80s presents ZTT remix project. In this video you will see how the duo discovered that Frankie Goes To Hollywood‘s The Power Of Love was originally recorded seven beats-per-minutes (BPM) slower than the released version and you can take a listen to how the 12-minute ‘Blank & Jones so8os Reconstruction’ version of the track (created using only original multi-track parts) is shaping up.

“so80s presents ZTT”: Full track listing and running times revealed.
DJs Blank & Jones have finished mixing the audio for their so80s presents ZTT two-CD release. This project involved going back to original Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Art of Noise, and Propaganda multi-track master tapes and creating brand new mixes ONLY from the existing archive audio.
We revealed the track listing to readers of the SDE weekly newsletter on Sunday, but wanted to bring everyone here up to speed, with the added bonus of having the full running times for all tracks for the first time (see below for details). If you’d like to know more about the track selection for this release, Piet Blank offers some insight in amongst the comments here.
