The art of the greatest hits
The news yesterday that Universal will issue yet a new Elton John compilation (called Diamonds) signified the start of the run up to Christmas and probably the first of many time-honoured ‘best of’ collections are that are now waiting in the wings.
The greatest hits. Loved by record companies, and people who buy their albums from supermarkets or petrol stations, but not normally admired by actual, proper fans. The reason is straightforward enough – more often than not, they’ve got everything already.

David Bowie & Trevor Jones / Labryinth soundtrack (vinyl LP)
Despite being issued in 1986 between (arguably) his two worst albums, there’s much to enjoy about David Bowie‘s work on the Labyrinth soundtrack. Underground is particularly good and As The World Falls Down is a plaintive ballad. This is a black vinyl reissue but coloured limited editions are also available.

Elton John / Songs From The West Coast available on 2LP vinyl separately

Elton John announced a partnership with Burberry last October and an expensive vinyl box was duly issued, sold exclusively in-store and online by the luxury brand.
The one real ‘carrot’ for fans – who otherwise rolled their eyes at the £225 box set, which was “flecked with gold glitter” – was the inclusion of a two-LP vinyl edition of John’s 2001 album Songs From The West Coast. The reason was simple, it was the only place to find this album on vinyl, until now…

Elton John / Goodbye Yellow Brick Road super deluxe edition box
Universal’s recent 40th Anniversary super deluxe edition box set of Elton John‘s 1973 album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is something of a mixed bag.
Considering this album is Elton’s Band on the Run, his Dark Side Of The Moon, the packaging is a little disappointing. Universal have got us used to relatively lavish sets involving large books, memorabilia and the like. The Who‘s Quadrophenia and Tommy both enjoyed this kind of presentation continue reading »
