53 responses to SDEtv / Howard Jones: Human’s Lib and Dream Into Action unboxed

  1. Mika says:

I own all the original albums + 12″ versions + most of the RISK Fan Club records + HoJo´s own limited edition CD boxes + some Japan Imports etc. Now I payed more than 200 euros for these boxes. I was even one of the first 100 pre-orderers, but I only got a little card signed by HoJo as extra. Just one (Dream Into Action), not two (Human´s Lib) – even I bought both boxes. I must say I’m a little disappointed :( But I still love HoJo´s music. Human´s Lib is one of my favourite albums ever together with ABC, TFF, Human League H17, Depeche Mode, OMD, Thompson Twins etc. So thank You HoJo! Maybe one day I´ll see you live on stage. It´s on my bucket list!

    • SimonP says:

A singer who has been touring for 35 years or more is on your bucket list?! What has prevented you from seeing him already?

      • Mika says:

Unfortunately HoJo has never been big here in Finland, so he’s never performed here. Like Thompson Twins, OMD, Heaven 17, ABC, Yazoo etc.

  2. Richard John says:

Thanks for the review, Paul. I think for my (just shy of) 100 quid, I’ll go with the Loving the Alien box set.

The 2CD/DVD sets here look the best value, and I might drop for those down the road.

  3. AudioDile says:

I’m curious about the new mixes from the SDE’s:

    New Song (New Version)
New Song (New Mix Version 2)
Things Can Only Get Better (Remixed)
No One Is To Blame (TV Mix)

Are these mostly the same or are there interesting differences?

And are the Farmyard versions just demos?

  4. Griffin says:

Thanking you Paul for the video. Now I’m sure I will NOT get these big boxsets. I don’t want the vinyl albums. They just want to ensemble everything together in a bigger box and put a much higher price tag on it. I would expect them (Cherry Red/Howard Jones) to make different package for the CD’s & DVD’s instead of simply put the 2CD+DVD set along with card sleeve CD & DVD. If they can do it that way. They could also do another set with 2CD+DVD plus the card sleeve CD & DVD WITHOUT the vinyl & the big box. They just want to milk us again and again untill the last drop.

  5. chrispy says:

    Thanks, Paul. Nicely done.

I still just cannot wrap my head around the absence of the original LP mix of What Is Love? on the “album”. Even if there is a slight different between the version placed at index 2 for CD1 and the actually labelled-as-“Extended” mix on CD2, the 3+ minute mix WAS originally part of the album and is now not present in this box, with the exception of the DVD where the promotional video for What Is Love? uses it. Sorry but not having it on the CDs is annoying me, and is embarrassing for whoever assembled this otherwise mostly nice selection of audio tracks.

  6. SimonP says:

Dream Into Action “SDE” is now showing as out of stock on Cherry Red’s website.

Also, You Jazzy Nork! on CD3 states it as being unreleased in remastered form, but it is included on the Risk disc in the 3 disc D-Tox reissue from 2011.

    • Neil says:

Yes and you would have thought if he was supposed to been involved with these reissues he would have noticed that.

  7. Craig says:

Great video Paul. Good to see honest good/bad sides shown about these types of products, especially given the price.

My problem with the whole thing is that the box contains mixed media. Even though vinyl is “hot” right now, still a very high percentage of people could care less about vinyl.

The cassette thing I consider to be like the badges and wallet thing – just an extra thing. Even less people have cassette players, but again, I consider it a bonus.

But the real gems in this set is the extra disc of rarities not in the 2CD version, and the extra DVD (especially Live in Japan).

I’m fine with only including it in the box (like TFF did), but there should be a version without the vinyl but with everything else. Yes, it would add an extra SKU, but even with all the times I have bought this material (record, cassette, CD, DTOX sets), I might have gone for a 3CD+2DVD version.

Something for the record companies to think about going forward.

  8. Dream into return action says:

Thanks for the objective review Paul.

It’s not that i’m not grateful for the unreleased tracks are being made available to fans, although there are basic omissions which could and should have been included when sold as ‘super deluxe’ as others noted – it’s firstly about the price on finding out how this has been packaged. I feel ripped-off.

I’m glad I saw your review before I opened my box sets. My hopes had been way to high for the almost £200 price tag for the two.

The packaging and presentation looks as though they dreamt up that super deluxe price then forgot to provide the goods and quality. The extra unreleased tracks, are presented and packaged as though they forgot to include them, so threw them in, in cheap card sleeves with home-CD-designer looking artwork along with tat looking as cheap as kids’ stickers found in cereal packets. And i do not like the messy cheap looking picture discs.

The sad thing is, even if the price was much, much, lower it’s still disappointingly packaged and could have been so much better, ironic as CR own HJ’s catalogue. HJ’s own released box sets on his Detox label were of a high quality and I was happy paying a higher price for that.

I’m returning my box sets unopened. I hope CR realize how outrageous they’ve been with the price for the poor quality, design and packaging.

If CR want to turn dreams into action for this price point, give fans 5.1 mixes on blu-ray and unreleased tracks on extra discs in a hard back book, with it’s production outsourced to a high quality designer and printer.

  9. Kauwgompie says:

Paul, thanks for this great video. Some of the things you mentioned would completely get lost on me had you not pointed them out. What I also like is that you said you got the box sets from Cherry Red but you still produced an independent, neutral review. Kudos!
I’m glad that HJ told you there may be a 5.1 version of the albums. That is actually big news! I would be the first to buy them. Hopefully that will happen as the box sets are quite flawed in my view. Wayyy too expensive for the things you get.

  10. Dan says:

The vinyl is 140g but the prices are £30 each??

    • David M says:

Weight of vinyl has nothing to do with sound quality (or anything else really)

      • Dan says:

I never said the weight impacted the sound quality? My point was if you’re going to charge £30 for a 1LP Vinyl then at least press it on the most popular premium weight, other I’d expect to pay £18.99 for an LP of this calibur.

  11. Igor says:

Great video! Waiting for my Deluxe Box this days… :-)

  12. David Carter says:

Thanks for your video Paul, I was tempted by these and your review has helped me decide to perhaps wait for a price drop.

  13. Michael says:

I personally think they should do them the way the Marillion set was done. I have similar ones like the Blancmange and Miles Davis Bitches Brew sets and they’re neat, tidy, and shelf friendly. Leave the vinyl for a separate purchase. Its still a specialty item and inflates the price considerably. I remember Air (of whom I’m a huge fan) did something similar with Twentyears where, if you wanted the third cd which was made up of remixes they’d done for other people, you had to buy the box set.

    • Caroline says:

The Bitches Brew set you have is a cut-down version of a hefty behemoth with a vinyl pressing and reproduction memorabilia as part of the package. Sony were really good at this for a while, re-issuing these sets with simple card packages and not mixing formats but, sadly, didn’t do this for all their Miles deluxes. I agree with you and greatly prefer those smaller, neater packages too.

(Actually, there are 2 different BB deluxes in this kind of package…)

  14. Elizabeth Hirst says:

I’ve been ploughing through my copies of both boxes and am loving some of the rarities, especially the really early visual demos. They were pricey, but a pretty good job has been done with them. I don’t like paying over the odds for stuff any more than anyone else, but these are two of my favourite 80s albums, so there was never any question I would get them.

  15. Glenn says:

Nice video Paul. Ordered the 3 disc versions yesterday (was cheaper to ship to US from Amazon UK than Amazon USA). Would have spent more for the additional CD/DVD content if they had done as you suggested in the video. No interest in vinyl/prints/fan club reproductions/badges etc. Missed opportunity here but looking forward to the 3 disc versions which look really nice.

  16. Ian says:

I’m sure I read that the original LP version of What is Love? was to be used for this issue. Annoyingly I can’t now find where I read this…anyone else recall this?

  17. Carsten says:

That’s a great unboxing video and I agree with everything you said regarding the packaging and formats.
Apart from too many omissions for such an expensive box set, the following things also bug me:
    – Yet again using the original CD version of Human’s Lib with the extended mix of What Is Love? (and China Dance following the title track) even though it’s also included with the 12″ mixes on disc 2
    – Several original b-side songs (Change The Man, It Just Doesn’t Matter, Tao Te Ching, You Jazzy Nork!) missing from disc 2 and relegated to the box set
    – There’s a major cock-up with the full-length Total Conditioning (which was only included on the remastered 12″ Album/Action Replay box set in its edited form because they apparently couldn’t find the master tapes). At the end at 7:53, during the last of the vocal snippets from all the songs on the original album plus Always Asking Questions (which was a genius reprise) several words have gone AWOL: “Let the mind shut up and the heart do the rest” is reduced to “Let the mind and the heart do the rest”

    • Glenn says:

      Carsten,
Im confused about what you write about Total Conditioning being a “Major Cock up” and “several words have gone AWOL”. I have listened to the CD just now and I can assure you at 7:53 Howard sings “Let the mind shut up and the heart do the rest”

The CD version of the Humans Lib album was put out just as the CD was released ( except originally in Japan) with the Extended version of What is Love?
However, the version on CD 2 may seem the same, but for some special audiophiles and superfine out there, they will notice that at 2:52 on the extended version (Track 2)on the album CD there is a vocal/drums breakdown.
On the 12 inch mix the vocals have a 2 beat delay (echo) effect causing the words “what is love” and “does anybody” to repeat.
The effect does not appear in the long version used on the CD album. Other than that they’re pretty much, if not exactly, the same but different at the same time.

      • Carsten says:

        Glenn,
Thanks for the clarifications. As regards Total Conditioning, I haven’t listened to the CD yet, so it was probably just the digital file that was corrupted.

  18. Ian says:

I bought both of these for £79 each delivered, so I don’t feel too ripped off…spent most of Friday night and Saturday morning going through the content of HL, which is amazing. The Kid Jensen version of Human’s Lib is brilliant and you can hear the prog rock influences (!) on the early videos on the 3rd disc of the standard 3 disc set. Haven’t had chance to listen to DIA yet, but the running order on that set seems more logical as the extra disc has all the demos on the same disc. The 3 disc versions do offer the best value though, and definitely justify the £25 price tag.

  19. Eric says:

Excellent video, Paul. It’s helped me make a definitive decision on whether I give in to temptation (knowing full well the earth will rebel?!), because Human’s Lib is one of the most important albums of my life and remains a deep favourite. When you began showing the outside of the box, and all the contents displayed on the rear text, I felt I was going to have to get this (and Dream Into Action).

However, now I have seen just what is inside, I think they are hideously over-priced. Even if they were, say 48.99 – like the Tango In The Night SDE was on release – I’d have felt a bit guilty and indulgent, because they are not remotely good value for money. And it saddens me to say that, because surely I am exactly its target audience and I would jump at the chance to own some of the stuff inside the box. But not at extortionate prices.

Funnily enough, I don’t mind the design things that bother you about the front covers and the picture discs, it’s always a personal taste thing with the visuals. At least they matched up the fonts to the album titles, so it’s not too incongruous.

I wonder what Cherry Red/Howard’s defence of the price point would be. Thanks for the video, though!

    EG.

    • Paul Sinclair says:

Glad the video offered some help. I suspect Cherry Red plan to market the picture discs separately at some point, which might explain logos, track listings, stickers on the front, etc. One of the worst aspects is the tiny CD-sized booklet where you have to go to find any text/interviews etc. That’s fine if you are spending £25 but is not really good enough for a £96 box set.

  20. PChris says:

I was holding out on these boxes since the price was quite steep and so many other re-issues lately. Thanks to this vid I’m gonna skip these. Will settle for the 3 disc and probably the colored vinyl.

  21. Jeff Weinbender says:

Great unboxing video. I really appreciate what you do.
However, to me, music is more about hearing than seeing. I would have included a 5.1 mix (like the Marillion) or at least a high res (24/96) stereo master. They still can do this as a separate product, (hint, hint). I will gladly pay 50 for a download of a proper 5.1 mix! (not just an up mix like Howard’s promo video collection)

  22. Daniel ( from Berlin ) says:

i heard no differences between “what is love” lp version and extended mix.
have anyone better ears ? ;)
meanwhile: the mixes of “new song” and the instrumental of “bounce right back” are great !!

    • Neil says:

He has used the extended mix on the album yet again. It’s as if he doesn’t like the original.

      • Daniel ( from Berlin ) says:

yes neil i understand, but why then use the same version twice on the double cd ?
        cd 1 as track 2 and on cd2 as track 2. ??
paul have you any idea ? what can be the message about using the same mix again
        on the same release ?

    • Glenn says:

      Hello Daniel from Berlin.
As for the What Is love versions, have another listen.
They are the same length, and if you didn’t listen carefully, appears to the be the same version.
At 2:52 on the extended version (Track 2)on the album CD there is a vocal/drums breakdown.
On the 12 inch mix the vocals have a 2 beat delay (echo) effect causing the words “what is love” and “does anybody” to repeat.
The effect does not appear in the long version used on the CD album. Other than that they’re pretty much, if not exactly, the same.
      However…it is different :-)

  23. Roelant says:

Paul, you did it again. Just like to say to you I appreciate your work and all the content you present here for all those years already. Thumbs up!! This time – knowing that you like HJ’s music – you delivered a very informative and objective unboxing video. Thank you very much. I ordered PY’s forthcoming singles box set without blinking but wasn’t sure about this new re-issue (after buying HJ’s ‘own’ nicely done re-issues a few year back). Now I know… Maybe the standalone 2CD/DVD sets but not these boxsets.

PS: I’m still enjoying those Aztec Camera re-issues that I won in one of your competitions!

  24. Paul English says:

    Very informative video, Paul.

My two Super Deluxe sets are on the way from Amazon. Slightly disappointed now when I see the packaging. I’d have preferred jewel cases rather than cardboard and the coloured vinyl instead of a picture disc. Presume no download card for the cassette?

  25. rickjapan says:

Paul, as always a great and objective review.
I fully understand and agree with your points. I’m one of those who avoid vinyl like the plague, so I just went for the CD sets. Of course if the rare audio had been available on these I would have been prepared to pay more.
These box sets certainly seem overpriced for what you get.
Thanks again for all the useful information!!

  26. John Orr says:

Excellent unboxing video once more, enjoy watching these. They say the world would be a boring place if we all agreed, but when it comes to this particular subject, our hobby of buying/listening/collecting music etc, I do agree with your comments again Paul. The packaging is shocking quite frankly, especially the inside of the box. It looks like some of those early box set attempts from the 80’s, like that Eric Clapton one? Cheap and nasty, and certainly not worth the price tag they’re asking. Maybe they’ll come down in the future, but it looks like the 3 disc version for me as it currently stands.

  27. Steve F says:

As always, an honest review from yourself Paul. really good to see what these look like and the contents in detail. I agree with all of the points you made. Obviously, the most important thing is the additional content on the CD’s and DVD’s. I still want to buy this but agree, there’re better ways the physical contents could have been presented. The absence of a book with photo’s, essays etc. etc. is unfortunate. A surprising omission for a Super Deluxe Product.

I can’t afford either of these at the mo, but they are on my Amazon Watch List so hopefully, they won’t go out of print before I can get hold of them.

Great video. Thanks once again Paul.

  28. John Archbell says:

I tend to agree with your synopsis Paul. However, I was waiting for you to perhaps be a little more critical on the ‘value for money’ stakes. I think you’ve been generous with your 3/5.

I’ve yet to explore inside my own copies but after having seen your reviews I’m thinking Cherry Red have gone for the spacious car with more leg room approach. Human’s Lib and Dream Into Action are the only two HJ albums that I’ll purchase in this particular format. They were both instrumental to my youth and followed me as I made my transition from a young boy, to teen, to young man. So naturally I wanted to know more about the projects and learn about the history of the two albums.

I’m a little disappointed with what you actually get for the money. As you said, you can buy the standalone 2CD/DVD for £25 (ish) and I was in two minds to just get those plus the two coloured vinyl. However, my eyesight is not the best these days and getting the magnifying glass out is not practical on a sunny day.

I really do like the box presentation and I don’t think the text on the front, detailing what it is, is too much of an issue. For example I don’t keep the hype stickers on the cellophane – straight in the bin. Like yourself, I think the card inside does give the impression of going a little cheap. Having said that, production costs have to be recouped somewhere for such a limited quantity I suppose. In comparison to the Soft Cell ‘Keychains and Snowstorms’ boxset it is far better in looks, although at least there is a lovely hard back book that slots in nicely – but plain blue discs inside? Really? I do think Cherry Red could have added a decent book to use up that empty space though – in both of the HJ boxsets.

Still, I’m happy that I purchased and I have no regrets. That will be the end of purchasing the Howard Jones catalogue for me.

    Great video Paul, thanks.

  29. Tim says:

    Interesting and useful video.

  30. -SG- says:

Thank you for the unboxing video. I have to say I am disappointed by the presentation. It’s great these are getting an expanded reissue, Human’s Lib stands as one of my favorite early 80′ s records, right up there with The Hurting by Tears For Fears, which really makes me blink here, because of the kind of choices they made in making these sets. I am really glad you were involved with the TFF sets as they are excellent in content and in value. For one this should be the last word on this era and it is really incomplete, taking for granted that anyone who would buy this already has the expanded sets from 10 years ago. I can say I did not get those and was not aware of them when they came out, and now they are difficult/expensive to get secondhand, and at this price this should include everything, risk disc material, and all 12” mixes and the 12” album and Action Replay. Instead, the presentation is cheap and it is pumped up with some tat that really offers little value, am I really going to hang that picture disc on my wall, probably not. A much smaller box should have been created with an expanded book and all of the material which may expand things to another 2-3 discs, per set and no vinyl and the early demos on the CD instead of only on a cassette. I was really shocked they just included the 3 disc set in there with cardboard and a flimsy book. It really looks like the boxes are just big to sell at an inflated price and take up more wall space. I was really interested in these sets and would have gone for it if they were comprehensive and did not cut corners in the presentation, but due to how they chose to do this I am not very excited.

  31. Andy Patchell says:

Spot on review….a wasted opportunity for the high price.

  32. Stephen dC says:

Fascinating viewing [I haven’t watched an unboxing before] and I agree with you about price etc.

I have always wondered about these kinds of things, do they have to repay the original design company for the artwork? For me, £96 for something that already exists is super expensive. Looking at it in basic terms, it’s some nice paper and card with rearranged artwork on it.

And the audio is already there, no extra studio costs are involved.

I may be missing something but would gladly be enlightened.

I certainly agree that it’s just a cheap option putting the extra content in slip cases. It might be environmentally friendly but they could have made the main case a bit bigger.

And yes, I have a bugbear too about the ‘limited edition sticker’ being on the outside cellophane. I’d rather it be on the box.

    • Straker says:

“I have always wondered about these kinds of things, do they have to repay the original design company for the artwork? ”

No but it’s common courtesy, and an unwritten rule, that you credit the original designers on the repackaged edition if you’re honouring their design. Having said that I’ve had some of my original design work from 30 years ago used in re-release CDs where that wasn’t respected, one in particular for Gary Numan where the hacks used to do the reissue gave themselves complete and sole design credit when they’d done next to no new design for the project. Pretty disgusting stuff really – Intellectual theft if you ask me.

      ……

On the specific matter of these HJ sets – Np marbles, NO sale!!

  33. Heinerich says:

    Great video, thank you :)
Well, I do like the coloured vinyl, especially the nice green one.

  34. Ian Ellis says:

Nicely presented as usual Paul. Thanks very much. I had a laugh at the rapid way you showed off the Human’s Lib badges for about half a second before tossing them back in the slot. As a 57 year old man who remembers the times and the album, I am of course looking forward to wearing those badges. cough….not.

    • Caroline says:

I enjoyed that too. After all, how many Pink Floyd fans pause to heft the marbles?

Or, indeed, Wham! fans, the shuttlecock…

I had both of these albums as a young ‘un, HL on cassette, DIA on vinyl. I’m watching the price of the 2cd+dvd options but wouldn’t touch these with the proverbial. Cherry Red frequently do an excellent job but they’ve misjudged the price-point here.

      • Neil says:

I have a feeling that Mr Jones set the prices for these himself like he did with his overpriced remasters about 10 years ago. Cherry Red despite their mistakes have always been fair with their pricing even on box sets but the prices for these are ludicrous for what you are actually getting.

        • mike says:

except the dtox remasters were well priced especially if you got the Risk discs. The superdeluxes this time arent well priced and shouldnt be more than £50.

          • Neil says:

I would hardly say £30 for the Action Replay EP and the mini album The 12 Inch Album as well as the screwed up Specially Selected 12 Remixes was well priced.

          • SimonP says:

The Risk disc has now been fixed at long last. Just email the HJ webstore and they’ll send you a new working one.
