  1. Rob says:

Any news on a separate release of the Bluray?

  2. Danny says:

Why on earth can’t the discs to be on spindles, like the Jethro Tull book editions?

Do they really think we want to be squeezing discs in and out of those cut-outs? If the discs aren’t scuffed on arrival, they soon will be. Design stupidity at it’s finest and reason enough for me to pass on this and await a standalone Blu-ray in a proper case.

The discs are the most important part of deluxe sets and their protection seems to be consistently given the least thought.

    • richie says:

I have no trouble taking out and replacing the discs form the book, no squeezing involved.

This is a magnificently presented package as it should be for the price (even the £46 I paid) and duplication (If you own as I do the previous releases including the soon to arrive Mobile Fidelity SACD & Mono LP, yes I`m mad!).

Can`t wait for the 75th Anniversary Box.

  3. I’m interested to know if the Blu Ray is the same mixes that are featured on the DVD-A. Any insight?

    • Paul Sinclair says:

Pretty sure they are… but that’s by no means definite.

    • Tom M says:

I understand the mono mix for this re-issue is from a different source than the DVD-A. The 1972 master is being used, supposedly superior.

      • Philip Cohen says:

The original mono master (the so-called “Los Angeles Tape”) was mislaid/misplaced many years ago, and now only exists via a 44.1Khz/16-bit DAT copy. Many releases of the mono mix have used the so-called “New York Tape”, a second generation copy made(in the 1960’s) for Capitol’s East Coast pressing plant. The”Carl Wilson Remaster” is yet another second generation tape; this one created for the Brother/Reprise U.S.A. 2-L.P. set “Carl and The Passions/So Tough” + Pet Sounds”

    • Philip Cohen says:

Yes, the surround mixes are the same as on the DVD-audio and the CD+DVD “40th Anniversary Edition”, except that the Blu-Ray disc adds an instrumental mix of the album, and omits the supplemental video material that was included in the CD+DVD “40th anniversary Edition”. On other internet forums, other people have also reported encountering scratched CD’s. In my case, it is “Disc Three”, with a huge scuff that covers 40% of the playback surface. Astonishingly, the disc plays normally on the first disc player that I tried it on (Oppo BDP-83) and also on my iMac computer. I had considered sending the disc to a disc polishing company, but if the scuff is at the metal layer, polishing wouldn’t help. Returning the entire set to the internet dealer that I bought it from might result in receiving a set that is worse. That is what happened to one consumer who returned his set to Amazon.
I wish that I had ordered the Japanese SHM-CD edition, despite its higher price. Unfortunately, pre-orders sold out the entire production run, and the Japanese pressing is now being scalped on Ebay at nearly double its intended selling price. Hopefully, Capitol’s Japan affiliate will produce a second production run. Why not? People will buy them.
In the meantime, I created a scan of my “Disc Three” and my receipt (as proof of purchase), and I included them in an e-mail to Universal Music in the U.S.A., so hopefully, they’ll reply.
The damage to my “Disc Three” is blatantly visible if the disc it viewed at an angle, but a disc player’s laser views the disc straight on, so the many marks may not be visible (or only be visible out of focus) to the laser.

@Philip Cohen “I wish that I had ordered the Japanese SHM-CD edition, despite its higher price.”
MusicDirect states they are shipping it this Friday – $29.99.

Oooo! Ahhhh! Nice! :) Not perfect. I in theory would prefer the shirt as well but I would need an XXL soooo…that probably wouldn’t happen. The beach ball is mildly cute and the bag while not the worst thing in the world is rather trite to me. I do understand some nick nacks like this are done to prevent bootlegging which is fine. I mean the nick nacks. Not the bootlegging. Lol.

  5. AlexKx says:

I still don’t understand why the whole audio collection is not on the Blu-ray. I guess so that they can resell it? That’s fine especially since an anniversary edition in my mind and judgement are limited editions so having it unique or not complete (with the intention of an updated re-release at some point) is o.k. for the most part, eh.

  6. Jim Horan says:

just got my from Amazon US the other day…a nicely done package, and yes, i own about 4o other versions of “Pet Sounds”, but as a graphic designer myself, and cd designer, i am always a sucker for packaging! That said, I do get bugged in packages like this where you KNOW there are tons of source material like photos and memorabilia, etc that Capitol Records has, but there is soon much dead space on the pages….yeah, kinda nitpicky, I know, but you only get to 50 once, so I guess I was expecting a tad more….detail maybe?

  7. RJSWinchester says:

I’ll be sticking with The Pet Sounds Sessions box set. Live tracks hold no interest whatsoever neither does the DVD. It’s worth buying though for the Stack ‘O’ Vocals tracks which are truly amazing. The tote bag and beach ball are just pointless tat. Got to admit Mr Sinclair, you always seem to treat things in a more heavy handed manner in these unboxing videos than I ever would! And I’d have cut out the sticker on the cellophane and popped it inside!

  8. Leemer says:

    Brilliant, thanks for sharing!

  9. Charles Hodgson says:

Heh, Glad I’m not the only one who carefully cuts around those stickers on the outer cellophane and sticks them inside the case or box!
I can still remember the horror of tearing off the wrapper on Husker Dü’s “Wharehouse Songs & Stories” nearly 30 years ago and chucking it away before I realised the title sticker was on the outside off the cellophane and not stuck directly on the album sleeve.
And ripping through the outer label on Neil Young’s Archives Vol. 1 Box.
    (Shudder…)
    (I almost envy ‘normal’ people…)

  10. Paul says:

I got this, I love it.. I never had the previous box set so great for me, each disc is a different experience…+ the goat is furry!

  11. CJ Feeney says:

That looks lovely. Glad the signature is genuine after the discussions we had here when the set was announced.

Anti-static sleeves are the way to for the discs, I use them in the Dylan Bootleg series deluxe sets which have similar storage.

  12. Auntie Sabrina says:

A real shame they didn’t use a similar style packaging to the Beatles 1+ which might stop the discs becoming damaged.

  13. Dennis says:

Hasn’t this been reissued enough? Talk about overkill.

  14. adam shaw says:

I received mine from Universal as well.
Not talking about the music but I was disapointed with thw autographed poster .
I thought it would have come with some sort of certificate or even a number .
All Ive got is the receipt that came in the box as some sort of proof .
It will have to be put in a frame as its just a thin bit of paper .

    • Paul Sinclair says:

My thought was that they could have put it in a tube. Was in reasonable condition but could easily have been creased etc.

  15. Jason Paskowitz says:

@ Charles Hodgson – Same experience with an original Elektra LP of The Cars Candy-O 35 years ago. And I’m still annoyed when record companies use super strong glue on the backs of stickers. I prefer to peel them off the shrink wrap where possible.

  16. DaveM says:

This looks great. Now dreaming of a 50th aniversary Sgt Pepper next year in a similar format, with newly remastered stereo, mono, Giles Martin remix, different alternative takes to Anthology and a new documentary:) I wont hold my breath.

  17. baward says:

Arghh! Not another tote bag! Has anything ever actually been ‘toted’ in a tote bag, I wonder? And what’s a tote anyway?

The rest of the package looks like a winner though.

  19. Robert Lett says:

Are the autographed editions still available? If so which link would I go to. Thanks!

  20. Robert Lett says:

    :-( Thanks!

  21. Mark says:

Really good deal on Amazon Canada for it at the minute if you’re willing to wait 1-2 months.

  22. George says:

Dumb question from a newbie – so Japan is the only place you can get the shm version of the deluxe blu-ray set correct? There was only one production run and that is sold out. Where are the best places to order shm versions in the future? Will there be another production run in the future?
