  1. Brian says:

I just finished watching the video, and wow! The set looks fantastic! Thanks very, very much for doing this, Paul!

    • Nick Preece says:

Looks Great! Shame they didnt give any of their other earlier albums the same 50th Anniversary treatment…..

  2. probablyrustin says:

2LP version is tempting, but will wait for a better price – not all that comparable to similar sets at the moment.

  3. Eat Me says:

10/10 for the book is right! Still, I can’t justify the price, especially considering that lenticular cover alone justifies a 10-15 quid markup to the overall cost but doesn’t take full advantage of that treatment (and the merest scratch or dent ruins it far worse than would a standard cover).

Nevertheless, thanks for the video, Paul. I’m certainly more interested in the box set than I was before. Maybe if by some miracle I see a used copy down the road I’d pick it up. The 2LP is more my speed since I don’t own Sgt. Pepper’s on vinyl.

  4. Nav says:

Lovin’ it already, can’t wait to receive mine tomorrow

  5. GuillermoE says:

Great, Paul. I been waiting all week for this. Looks marvelous. And I agree about the price, its not cheap, but the time, the people to create a box set like this, needs money and a profit. There’s too many people who think, that they only open one box and everything is ready to assemble. Anyway, thank you Paul for the video.

  6. Peter says:

    Good job, Paul!
    Really looking forward to it..

  7. Steven says:

Great video. Very informative. Would appear the DVD and Blu-Ray are marked region 0 and NTSC?

  8. Ben in Colorado says:

    Paul,
I told myself I wouldn’t watch this video, as I wanted to be surprised when I received my copy.
    Confession: I am weak…I am human….
    So I watched. Excellent video.

Now I really can’t wait! Cheers!

    • Trash says:

Yep Ben I did the same… and did the same!

It looks really superb and despite feeling guilty about spending so much on it I am really looking forward to receiving mine. The book looks like great reading.
My one concern is that I order from Amazon so I am hoping that it will be packaged better than their usual crummy standard.

Thank you for the video Paul (and I kind of have to agree with your reasoning on the price).
      Cheers

  9. Jeff D says:

Great job Paul!!! Thanks for putting it together!!! Crossing my fingers for a SDE version of the White Album next year.

  10. Pieter van der Velde wzn says:

Thank you Paul for looking into Sgt. Pepper. I got an e-mail from Concerto Amsterdam telling me I can collect my box tomorrow. Can’t wait. Everyday is Record Store Day.
I’ll problaby will also buy the latest Bad Company reissues.

  11. Alan says:

    Thanks Paul, well sane!

  12. Alan says:

Er….*done. But quite sane as well!

  13. Keith Droz says:

Whatever happened to the “alternate” pepper album with tracks that were unreleased? wasn’t that supposed to be part of this massive release too?? It was suppose to be a completely different album. Did I not read that somewhere??? or did it fall off the face of the earth?

    • Paul Sinclair says:

That’s on LP two of the double vinyl. But all the versions are included on CD in this box, just not ordered specifically as an ‘alternate’ Pepper.

  14. Sam says:

Hi Paul, thank you for posting this video. Perhaps you can clarify on one point: rumor has it that the BluRay may have Dolby Atmos-compatible audio. Indeed, there is a placeholder listing online for some cinema events where an Atmos surround mix will be played. Can you confirm whether the BluRay has that content? Thanks again!

  15. DaveM says:

If I hadn’t already got the SDE preordered, and I had reservations, that video would have sold it to me. Great stuff.
Only one more sleep till I open mine:)

  16. Auntie Sabrina says:

You’re pouting on the first photo, or is it just me….

  17. Auntie Sabrina says:

    Sam,

Disc 6 (Blu-ray) – Sgt Pepper in 5.1 surround sound and hi-res stereo

  18. Dean T says:

Pay day tomorrow…..but I must resist…. must stick to the plan….2cd until the price drops a bit..will definitely be put to the test when I walk in to hmv on Saturday….good luck to all who have preordered…it’s a great set.

  19. elliott buckingham says:

id be all in on a abbey road super deluxe I have ordered the 2cd edition of this but I still think its well overated

  20. Jeremy Earle says:

    Paul:

I may have missed it in your unboxing video, but do you think there will be room in the box to fit the double vinyl LP once it’s released?

    • Willy says:

      I was wondering that too.

    • Domingo Martínez says:

      Hi Paul,

      great, great, great¡¡¡

      Thanks for your video. WOW¡

      Cheers.

      Domingo.

    • Trash says:

      That’s actually a good question.
By they way – I think the double vinyl is released on the same day as the SDE.

And to the guy that said that this album is overrated… “You’re wrong” :-)

    • Paul Sinclair says:

I put a random gatefold vinyl in the box and it fits…. just. It’s a bit of a squeeze in truth, but the box will shut and just about squeeze back into the slip case. Not sure it’s worth doing this for fear of damaging the package.

      • Paul Lewis says:

Yeah, I just took delivery of the SDE and the actual vinyl (bought with Grand National winnings… honestly! And I hardly ever bet and never win so how timely!), and just as you say, it’ll just about fit, but I can hear the spine of the packaging creak with the extra stress… so probably not worth it, I agree!

  21. HalloweenJack says:

Great video, Paul! Thanks for all your hard work with superdeluxeedition.com!
£100 is a reasonable price for the set, considering the quality and contents.
Here’s hoping they continue the super deluxe edition releases with the White Album, Let It Be (complete with the film on Blu-Ray/DVD), and Abbey Road… but then there’s Revolver and Rubber Soul too! ;-)

  22. voxstarstream says:

Wonderful presentation, Paul! Thank you so much for sharing with us…mine shipped yesterday!

  23. Chris hampton says:

I have the original Pepper. I was not yet 16 when I bought it. Never forget not only the presentation of the whole thing but the look of the record itself. All the grooves together. As one. No gaps. That this was the realization of what that Strawberry Fields picture sleeve and record in February was all about. The sense of a record with a theme. Beatles childhood. But save Lucy in the sky and A Day in the life in all it’s majesty this was a concert I saw happening that was nowhere near up to the sounds of Strawberry fields or Revolver’s mindblowing groundbreaking Tomorrow never knows. In short take off ‘A Day in the life’ and the whole concept and recording thing and you are left with kind of average songs. Following the playing of the album and nevertheless being stunned, after that June I never really played it again. In all my years I have played Revolver more than any other album I heard or owned. Sadly Revolver never got a fanfare of being the dawn of the Pepper era that it deserves. A mind boggling output that saw it’s closure with Magical mystery tour in Dec 67. This projects music sadly also under-rated. Which all goes back that most of us purists and those who were ‘There’ were all dreaming of a ‘Pepper era box set’. So that would have included the much under-rated George Harrison masterpiece ‘It’s all too much.’ However as I joke when I die I’ll haunt Abbey Eoad and play all the dam tapes myself till eternity!!

  24. Martin says:

Obviously I have heard of this band. Over the years I have become familiar with many tracks. Maybe one day I will listen more closely.

    • Stevie B says:

Thanks Martin, do let us know your thoughts when you’ve found the time to do so.

    • Truthsayer says:

Never heard of them, who are they? Gimmicky name, old fashioned also. Destined for the bargain bins.

  25. Stefano Dalmonte says:

Hi Paul, it seems that in CDs (and vinyl) there are tracks NOT included in the Super Deluxe Edition (i.e. “With A Little Help From My Friends (Take 2 / Instrumental)” and “Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite! (Take 4)” plus some other slight differences in the name of the tracks).
    Is it true??
Or I am sure, buying the SDE, to have all
    Thanks a lot for replying

  26. Kenny Raeburn says:

Great review Paul, now you have me considering it’s purchase.
I was hoping for a mono vinyl version, but that hasn’t happened.
This could cause a divorce coming so quickly on the back of RSD and the Kraftwerk box set lol

  27. Mike says:

Box now 90,39 Euro, 78 GBP at Amazon Germany!

  28. Daryl says:

I am a Stones fan first and foremost, but do enjoy The Beatles music. I wasn’t considering this at all, but your video has me on the turn…
Now, a Revolver set like this would be a definite for me (my favourite of their albums by far!)!

  29. Gra says:

Great work Paul.. the work you do is appreciated. Brilliant review and you have me excited! Cannot wait for my package from the U.K. here in Australia

  30. Chris Squires says:

    What a morning!

The SDE and Vinyl of Pepper turned up in the post and the Gold vinyl Hunky Dory hand delivered by the owner of my local record store…now there is service.

Don’t know how I will get any work done today….

  31. Patrick says:

I pre-ordered the boxset almost two months ago so I’m a bit miffed that Amazon haven’t actually dispatched my copy yet. I always assumed that one of the perks of pre-ordering was getting the item on release day at least.

  32. Jeremy Earle says:

    Paul:

Thanks for your comments (and test) re: whether the double vinyl LP might fit in the box. It looked as though there might be some wiggle room in there. Thanks for confirming.

  33. Despite having no intention of purchasing the set, I enjoyed that video, thank you Paul.

I daresay you’re right and The White Album will be next. You only have to look at the RIAA certifications to see the commercial logic. Personally I’d far rather see (and definitely buy) expanded versions of Rubber Soul and Revolver, when they were (and obviously this is my opinion, not an absolute truth) genuinely evolving rather than fracturing — and with much better songs.

  34. Jeff D says:

It looks like Amazon US is sold out of it, at least for now.

  35. Peter Stanton says:

I was 16 in 1967 and very into music and, like many of the contributors here, I didn’t really like Sergeant Pepper and preferred other Beatles albums. I wasn’t going to buy this.
However, having watched your video, and seeing the price on Amazon Germany, I just hit the button.
I have also just bought Dylan’s Bootleg 10 deluxe box from Amazon UK, £54.
    Good job it’s pay day.
Thanks again Paul for a great site.

  36. Adrian Grove says:

I have got the 2cd set and the deluxe 6 cd collection, and they are well packaged editions and paid a penny under a hundred pounds for the box and under 16 quid for double disc, got both from a local independent record shop here in Cheltenham. The hardback book with the deluxe box set is brilliant but the booklet for 2dc set is good too

  37. Derek says:

I don’t normally buy these expensive boxsets but treated myself to this one earlier- the stereo version sounds wonderful. Will check out the rest over the weekend

  38. Dean T says:

Ok I give in ….ordered sde from Germany …now how about the vinyl edition to listen to while I wait for it to turn up…..I’m so weak ….but look at it …who could resist…
Mind you so far this year it’s only this and the next Bowie box set that I’m really after,so it’s still a quite year for me…last year was a bit expensive….

  39. Steve says:

Thank you, Paul for a thoroughly enjoyable and informative video on The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper box set. I will have to wait on this as the price is too high right now. It’s looks fab !

  40. Tim says:

White Album would be nice but my heart is set on a SDE of Abbey Road

  41. m m says:

God ,having a real proustian moment with that new remix-this is amazing work by Giles Martin,it sounds like it could have been recorded yesterday. He should feel really proud of this-I bought the lp when I was eight years new in 67(or rather my parents did!) and I am so knocked out in the same way 50 years later! Absolutely brizzhot!

  42. Gaz says:

Amazon orders come with the MP3 – if I order the vinyl, does anyone know if I’d get the same tracks as the 2 CD set, i.e. Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields as well? Thanks

    • David M says:

Try it and see. The tracks will immediately appear in your library. You can then cancel the LP before you download anything.

  43. Trash says:

Listening to Stereo (re)mix on headphones via iTunes as I write this (I won’t be able to listen to my physical copy for a while – my girlfriend confirms that it has arrived though).
I have to say it really does sound excellent – just having more of the instruments and vocals in their own ‘space’ makes a huge difference to the listening experience.
And Giles has managed a few tricks that must have been painstaking to achieve (listen to the way the individual notes in the keyboard part to Lucy in the Sky are dotted across the stereo image for example).
I’m only on the fourth track so far and it is really getting better all the time!

    Lovely!

  44. Sean says:

Ha, my credit card didn’t like the Amazon Italy charge…cancelled. I’m taking that as a sign that my 2009 mono will do

  45. Scott Sparks says:

How many of the outtakes from CD 2 and 3 are also on anthology?

  46. Erik van der Scheer says:
  47. Brad B. says:

Thank you Paul for doing presentations like this, and for all the information you provide on your site!! As a dare I say ‘casual Beatles fan’ I’m certainly convinced a purchase of at least the 2 CD edition will not disappoint, along with letting people ‘window shop’ with your unboxing videos, just to let people look before they leap with their wallets (I’ve made 2 purchases and counting just from these videos!). Keep up the good work!!

  48. Simon Franklin says:

The stereo mix is amazing! Simply stunning! If you get anything get this. It’s defined the music with great separation, everything is louder and clearer – you can hear the individual backing vocals.

I have it on good authority that although the music content hasn’t been sourced or agreed the artwork has been designed for many more anniversary releases and retrospective realease – the intent is to space them out! Be excited

  49. Mic Smith says:

I was undecided about whether spending this much on the Sgt Pepper box set was justified. I really wanted the mono mix more than the out takes and new stereo mix and 5.1. But the details revealed about the book in your video tipped the scales for me. Placed an order with What Records before seeing the Amazon.de price but I would rather support the smaller independent retailer than Amazon so all is good.

  50. Mike appleby says:

Sgt Pepper Super Deluxe just dropped on Amazon Germany to 80 Euros

  51. Tim Baldwin says:

Just bought on Amazon Germany and it only charged me 67 Euros even though it’s marked at 80!

  52. Daran says:

They must be compensating now… back up to 100 Euro’s!

  53. Danny says:

The last bit of A day in the Life after the pianochord on the mono edition (cd four of the box set) is not on the cd. Just 2 or 3 seconds and then starts Strawberry Fields. Did anybody noticed? Of am I the the only one. Please let me know. Or just listen and find out.

  54. Phil Fogel says:

Was just at my local record shop Sunrise Records which just opened after HMV closed their doors here in Canada. The box set is ridiculous priced at over $200, Amazon Canada wants $172. I was going to buy the 2 CD set which was originally listed around $18 but is now $26 (in store)-$28 (Amazon Canada), WTF. Why is there no vinyl in the box for that price? I was going to just buy the vinyl but at $50 it is still too much, I almost considered it but does it come with a digital download? Without it, it’s stupid, most vinyl comes with a download code. I have a record player but what happens when I’m travelling and only have my phone? The sales clerk said that the Beatles record label/distributor just upped their prices on all Beatles products 3 days ago. With so much music theft, how is this going to entice people to buy music? Needless to say I left buying no Beatles :(

  55. madman says:

Wow, amazing review Paul. You gave the exact reasons I passed on the super deluxe editions of the Zeppelin catalogue; mainly a book that you won’t look at more than twice. But this looks like it’s worth the price and then some. Can’t wait to get my copy!

  56. Wayne Klein says:

Does anyone know why a needle drop of the Capitol 45 was used for th Penny Lane alternate mix with the ending horn solo by Dave Mason?

cd four track 19 of the set – penny lane US promo mix – the needle drop of penny lane, was the only source available as the original master tape was lost or destroyed. so they had to use a beat up 45 recording from a CDR as the source (or so the internet would have you believe)..i love the extra fanfare at the end of this version and always have, but i wont be listening to it, as i’m my opinion it is sounds terrible and distorted, especially knowing the background to it, its just more of a curio..apparently the original 45 released are worth a fortune because of the rarity, but then begs the question, couldn’t they get hold of a better version to include in this set from collectors out there? id be lying if i didn’t say i loved this boxset though, just a very slight niggle with this penny lane senario, there are debates going on at reddit and stevehoffman forums currently, as well as this one, but its because people who love music tend to be very anal about such matters.

hell, i have a fan-sourced rip of the US “Rarities” compilation from the 80s and it is in STUNNING quality – very unfortunate what happened here, and idk why they didn’t try harder.

The contents are just fab, starting with the 3D slip cover to the 5.1

Is this the best SDE ever ? And/or sets the standards for all SDEs ?

Answers on a postcard please and you might win a Blue Peter badge.

Great video! I have a question and I’ll throw this out to everyone. I was listening to my box today on my iPhone and an the mono mix disc, A Day In The Life, the tag at the end cuts off after 2 seconds. I thought it might of been a syncing error, but I put the CD on in my car and the same thing. Has anyone else experienced this?

  62. Robert says:

Thanks for this great unboxing video, Paul ! This boxset looks awesome !

I want to have this boxset, but there is one thing from that kept me from buying it. There are so many different reactions to the sound of the new Sgt. Pepper remix. Some reactions are positive, other negative.

And that is why I want to ask everyone this question : How good or bad is the new stero mix ? And how is the soundquality of this boxset ?

I hope that someone can give an aswer to my questions …

Greetings! I reacted fast enough and got the box set version from amazon Germany, for €80. Now, I’m torn between keeping it or returning the whole thing and getting the 2 CD and vinyl versions instead. I heard that the vinyl edition is the way to listen to the new stereo mix. Anybody’s thought or input on that? Thanks guys!

    • Paul Sinclair says:

Don’t really see how the vinyl version would be any better than the CD and especially the blu-ray/DVD. This is a digital remix remember. My advice would be to hang on to the box, you might regret getting rid of it. The book is amazing.

  64. Michael says:

Thank you Paul for your advice. Yes, I’ll probably regret it returning the box. Makes sense what you’re saying. On a sidenote – Another big thanks for the attention you put into responding questions and doubts. That is not always the case on other sites and it makes one feel welcome here. Have a relaxed weekend.

Keep the box…..pick up the vinyl sometime down the line when a good deal turns up and your finances recover a bit from buying the box .
I can speak for the vinyl version as I have both box and viny set…it sounds amazing….and it’s a perfect pressing (at least mine is) half speed Abbey road master ,I think there’s something on you tube about it .Having said that absolutely nothing wrong with the cds…
All I have to decide is where to keep my rsd penny lane 7″…in the box or with lp…any thoughts
    Anyone …

Too many instrumental outtakes, sure there were more takes with vocals. I will keep the box, of course, but a bit disappointed.

    • Philip Cohen says:

Starting with the “Help” album sessions in 1965, The Beatles no longer always attempted to sing live while recording the basic tracks. Starting at that point, The Beatles often focused on achieving a good instrumental track, then they added vocals.
Actually, I’m surprised at the amount of “Sgt.Pepper’s” alternate takes that Do have vocals, even if some of them are flat(especially McCartney’s) or ragged. These were rehearsal or “guide” vocals that were never meant for public consumption. They weren’t serious attempts.

  67. Michael says:

So far only heard the DVD’s audio on my TV. And that’s already a fat sound! Now it’s time for the CD’s in my stereo…I’m surprised how heavy some of the songs are sounding. Like they came alive again. Drums all the way in the front. Guitars like George and John are sitting right next to you!! Ahhh, and the weirdness of time… Isn’t it ironic that Sgt. Peppers now has kind of a 3D-ish, plastic cover. An eye on Their Satanic Majesties Request perhaps…The eternal battle between Beatles and Stones continues!

  68. Michael says:

Hey Paul! Do you, by any chance know if Jefferson Airplane’s Surrealistic Pillow will get a 50th anniversary treatment as well? Was wondering, since The Doors and Grateful Dead got their ’67 albums reissued as 50th editions. Thanks and regards!
