The Beatles / New ‘Glass Onion’ video

A week prior to the reissue of The Beatles‘ ‘White Album’, Apple Corps and Universal Music have commissioned a fantastic new video for ‘Glass Onion’ which gives fans the opportunity to hear the new 2018 stereo remix and enjoy some rare footage and images of the Fab Four.

The audio synced to the video is Giles Martin and Sam Okell’s new 2018 stereo remix, which features on all physical formats on the 50th anniversary reissue. The visuals takes their cue from the imagery on the poster included with the original vinyl of the ‘White Album’ which is of course reproduced for the anniversary deluxe and super deluxe editions.

The 50th anniversary editions of ‘The White Album’ are released on 9 November 2018. All the format details can be found on this post, while track listings and pre-order links are below.

  1. Blakey says:

They could have done a nice video for ‘Yer Blues’. But I can’t see ABKCO letting Apple use any Rock ‘N’ Roll Circus footage of John…

Has anyone else noticed the screeching sound (now) at the end of ‘Helter Skelter’, just before Ringo’s ‘Blisters’ outburst?

  2. George glazener says:

Here’s hoping that the individuals bringing us these wonderful treasures are gradually getting the message that their efforts are greatly appreciated by we, the fans, and that, come late 2019 and early 2020, the fan base will be primed and ready for the 50th anniversary of that long anticipated holy grail, the LET IT BE SUPER DELUXE EDITION. You want to talk about a sales record being broken for all Beatles products, that will do the trick..!

  3. Rob says:

    A very different mix indeed.
The bass is more in the mix and less dominant, but what I think is strange is that the orchestral parts are shifted to the left channel while on the original stereo version they were equally balanced on the left and right channel. Because of that the new mix of Glass Onion sounds more like ping-pong-stereo to me than the original mix this way.
Overall it sounds pretty good and the footsteps in the beginning are new to me. Will they be on the physical release as well?

    • George glazener says:

I noticed something different too. Ringo’s snare drum double shot sounded closer to a single echoed strike than two distinct hits. Could have been my speakers, but it sounded that way to me. I also picked up some other percussion effects I’d not heard before, like a tambourine or shakers more up front in the mix. But that’s cool, as long as it’s something they actually did at the time, not something being added here in 2018.

  4. peter chrisp says:

Next week will be huge better start saving i see above Stan’s comment with the Anniversary edition of The White Album he’s hoping the box set will reduce in time? Will it happen? It will be interesting to see over the next few weeks if the price fluctuates or the song remains the same and definitely looking at Electric Ladyland also 50th, & Be Bop Deluxe’s Sunburst Finish, haven’t quite decided which one to buy first. I am a little lucky so far have just received a couple of music gift vouchers will use them towards either of the above 3

  5. Craig Hedges says:

I was hoping there would be a new documentary for this release. This is a fascinating time in The Beatles story but all we hear is that they weren’t getting on and the sessions were fraught. But apparently the session tapes tell a different story, whilst there was some tension it isn’t at the level that has been made out over the years. I cant wait to hear the sessions discs next week.

  6. Brian Kelly says:

We need more videos like this! More Beatles!

  7. Steve says:

If you have Apple Music there are a number of tracks available to listen to now. (Probably the same on Spotify)

  8. Tc says:

    Wowza etc

  9. J. Kane says:

Awesome video. Can’t wait for next Friday. In the meantime will just have to be content with Imagine box set and Dylan More Blood More Tracks which was waiting for me when I got home from work this afternoon.

  10. HalloweenJack says:

Was more impressed with lyric videos by the Stones and the Who… audio sounds good though.

  11. Gary C says:

I had to deal myself out too, the 3CD will have to suffice until November is over with at least

  12. Mathew Lauren says:

I’m hoping Giles has finally embraced surround-sound, however I agree with the first, 2 gentlemen below.

Burned 2wce already, I’m not “jumping in” and paying “STREET DATE” MSRP. I’ll wait to both see if the 5.1 mix is any more discrete (better use of surrounds) than “SPLHCB” 5.1 and “Imagine” 5.1, and is mastered for the audiophile, as opposed to being mastered for HTiB-owners, like “SPLHCB.” “Imagine,” despite its tepid “official” 5.1 mix was mastered well, imho, and with Black Friday, Cyber Monday and post-holiday sales starting (around the corner) here in the U.S. (very soon), what’s 2-weeks?

FTR, after being burned by RHINO re: the “FM ‘75” DD5.1 (only) disc, and finding that SAME boxset HALF PRICE 1-month later (used / MINT), and receiving a Styx cd/5.1 BR-A “The Mission” (NOT SW-5.1 style, as PROMISED by Shaw), I’ve decided to only buy STREET DATE “sure things” with the one exception being (a great deal $ on) Jimi Hendrix in 5.1, due next week!

If the “Big 3” cared, they’d put the best-surround mixed & mastered “rock” material on the best (hirez) format, price it responsibly (like Tull, XTC, Yes and Marillion) and call it a day — that’s investing in ones’ future!

As it is, “our music” is dying and we, the fans (“caretakers”) are also, many times, the abused! As of yet, I see NO effort to surround-remix 50-years worth of THE BEST, blues-based, Rock ‘n Roll into a (kid-friendly) streaming, surround-format (ATMOS – as promised by Dolby) — and save for Greta Van Fleet, “all I hear” (new) is (mostly) sh!t!

By the way, the Zep-sounding, Michigan-based rockers recorded in NASHVILLE – not L.A., Montreux, Seattle, Vancouver or even London (I mean, why not LONDON, they’ve “borrowed” so heavily from the Rock Gods (Zep) from the UK – record it there!)

The Michigan Rockers recorded in the “capital of country music,” Nashville, Tn! That alone, says everything (to me) about the state of the Recording Industry!

p.s. (from “Hemispheres” 5.1 banter) SW has the time, pace and is one of only a few that “get it” (embrace, discrete 5.1) with a proven CV! He’s the answer, until those without “the CV,” but 5.1 or ATMOS skills are given the chance. Most of these stereo-only engineers (nearing retirement) have proven ONLY, that they will NEVER understand (or care to understand) discrete-surround OR its appeal.

    • BritinDetroit says:

Greta Van Fleet are out of Frankenmuth, a Bavarian style village previously known for its chicken and Christmas store – the most unlikely of towns. It’s about 100 miles north of Detroit . Production of “Anthem” started at Rustbelt Studios in Royal Oak (Mi) and finished at Blackbird in Nashville. The self proclaimed trio, The Rust Brothers based in Detroit produced the album

Critical acclaim they tend not to receive but try to get a ticket for the 3 nights at the Fox Theatre between Christmas and New Year. No chance. They chose the smaller theatre but could have sold out Little Caesars without a problem. They sit high on the billboard charts and these youngsters (22, 19) are being compared to The White Stripes in the speed of their emergence from the Detroit Music scene.

  13. edji1 says:

And now to watch the video over and over and over again for as much of the weekend as the other half will let me (wink)

  14. edji1 says:

Wow! They can now add this to the beatles 1 video set and sell it me again and I just won’t care. Brilliant video. very very very very very very etc excited for this

  15. BritinDetroit says:

Its going to be quite a week. Bob Dylan Bootleg Series 14, together with the Steve Wilson Home Invasion arrive today and next Friday its the White Album.

Is there a term for suffering from SDE overload ? I probably need to take a break until Christmas.

  16. george glazener says:

Very Cool Video Indeed..! Definitely getting excited for 9 November..! There are many SDEs out there which I have to think carefully about purchasing, but this one is a MUST have. I was eight when the original White Album hit my brother’s record collection, and I well remember the dazzling and varied selection of songs and sound collages. Lady Madonna + Hey Jude had been on the radio all that summer, giving us a foretaste of the very modern and constantly evolving Beatles Sound. This album just blew everyone away, with its depth and variety; sweet ballads, rocking screamers, and totally weird stuff that earned The Beatles even deeper levels of mystique & admiration. Coming just a year or so after the magical imagery which Sgt Pepper gave us, this album truly redefined The Beatles yet again with a sound totally unlike anything they’d done before. Absolutely Brilliant then and now.

  17. Stan C says:

I hadn’t been aware that Capital had been trickling out a few tracks in the lead up to the new reissue… Lord, these are just spectacular.

  18. Ben in Colorado says:

I watched this video a few hours ago and thought it was excellent. They put a lot of time and effort into it and it is very creative. It really got me pumped for the release next Friday. Nice to see that they put some big money into promotion.

  19. Leo says:

It sounds great again! Now i need to wait for a nice price on the deluxe box
