Hear an early instrumental mix of Tears For Fears’ Sowing the Seeds of Love

Another bonus track to whet your appetite

With just over a month until Tears For Fears‘ The Seeds of Love box set is finally released, here’s an opportunity to listen to one of the many bonus tracks: an early instrumental mix of the lead single ‘Sowing the Seeds of Love’.

Unlike its follow-up, ‘Woman in Chains’, no instrumental of ‘Sowing the Seeds of Love’ was ever issued, so here’s a rare chance to examine the layers, take a good listen to Chris Hughes’ drums and that solo organ courtesy of Ian Stanley!

Although this instrumental is fairly well developed and the structure and most of the components are in place, it is still an ‘early mix’ so there’s little guitar and certain synth sounds that will have you running to the original to check if they are they’re in the finished article!

This version of ‘Sowing the Seeds of Love’ is exclusive to box set (it’s on CD 3: “The Moon: Radio Edits and Early Mixes”) and along with the other formats, that will be released on 9 October 2020.

SDE had a great deal of involvement in this set and as such we are selling the box set – and the black vinyl edition –  over on the SDE shop. Use this link to pre-order or alternatively make use of the buy buttons below. SDE stock allocations are guaranteed – if you pre-order we will supply!

Woman in Chains (Townhouse Live Jam Session) is up on YouTube.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohBXbj9ghWo

Hopefully this post works (as my posts with links in mostly don’t). I posted about the “Sowing the Seeds Instrumental” before Paul put up the announcement for that, but it didn’t go through.

  2. Donnie Biscuits says:

I think that I will be buying the full CD package. Grr. Need mo’ money.

  3. Joel Coffing says:

But weren’t digitally recorded albums recorded at 96/24K? Like Peter Gabriel’s Security? Shouldn’t they be able to release a 96/24K remix? Is the SACD of Security then from a 16-Bit master??

  4. Nelson Lee says:

Anybody see Curt and Roland playing in their previous band Graduate this morning on Runaround currently showing on talking pictures tv.

    • Chris Squires says:

Yep, I thought I was the only saddo watching old TV. Mike Reid was giving it his all.
Seeing Curt and Roland trying their best to get absolutely nowhere reminded me of watching videos of Abba singing People need Love or Benny trying to dance with the Hepstars. There’s some old film of Mike Oldfield playing with Kevin Ayers in Paris. You have these young people who have absolutely no idea what is around the corner. The Q-tips is another one. Future stars, world stars, schlepping around cold dance halls and hot studios. Hoping and dreaming and yet in a few short months / years every dream would be realized, for better or for worse. Are you prepared for what is just about to happen? It’s a shame no footage of The Executive exists akin to the Graduate footage.
Then you think of the hundreds and thousands of bands who were right there with them, startups that got nowhere until you give up and become a teacher, a sales rep or an accountant.

  5. Tim K says:

I love this stripped down version of “Sowing The Seeds”, although I did think that they nicked the backing guitars and organ from “I Am The Walrus” ! It’s great when you can hear a track like this and really appreciate the hard work that went into its production. Looking forward to its release.

  6. TRACY says:

This instrumental is fantastic, thanks Paul.

  7. stu says:

I appreciate that this may be a controversial view on this site, but the Seeds album always left me cold. I have all the time in the world for Big Chair, and enjoy the Hurting, but just can’t get on with Seeds… apart from the (almost) title track. Might even be my favourite TFF number, and the more versions of it that are out there the better. Absolutely love this early version and looking forward to hearing the other two versions (or more, I’ve lost count!)

  8. Michael says:

The early instrumental mix sounds like it could be a cool soundtrack for a yesteryear movie. Love the prominent retro-Hammond organ sound, and the ‘Ringo Starr’ drumming style, yet still unmistakably Tears for Fears.

I challenge every TFF fan to listen to this track all the way through, and try really, really hard not to sing the chorus, “Sowing the seeds of love!” I know I can’t (LOL)! Anxious to get the box set so I can hear the whole thing on my sound system.

  9. Derek Langsford says:

This is probably my most anticipated boxed set release since the SftBC box was issued. I know I am going to be listening to the extra discs a lot and hope the 5.1 lives up to the expectations that I am trying to keep under control.

  10. Erik says:

I keep telling myself I don’t need this, I don’t have the money, I need to be responsible, then you keep posting more “clips” like this to convince me otherwise!

Just to really punish you, Paul, think I will purchase it from the SDE shop. ;-)

  11. Ken Evans says:

    Fantastic instrumental mix.

Paul do you have any insight as to why these are appearing on the various high-res streaming providers in 16/44.1 rather than in 24/96 like most recent remasters? (Flaming Pie, Goats Head Soup)

    • Paul Sinclair says:

It’s because the album was largely recorded digitally and is therefore locked in to 16 bits and 44.1 kHz. The remaster and original mix on the blu-ray will be the same. Can’t get a proper hires unless you remix the album, which Steven Wilson did actually do, but he was very clear about not wanting his stereo remix to be released.

      • Trash says:

That’s interesting Paul, I had read that he didn’t want to do a remix because he felt the original was already perfect. I didn’t realise that he had *actually* completed a stereo remix.

Having said that – I don’t feel that any of his stereo remixes, that I have heard, have improved on the originals (I’ve only heard his TFF and XTC remixes). I’m sure his 5.1 mixes are great but I don’t have a 5.1 system so I am in no position to judge.

        • Paul Sinclair says:

Steven always does a full stereo mix before hitting the 5.1. It’s part of his process. Get the stereo worked out, understand what you have to play with and create a surround mix. He said to me that Seeds is one of the best sounding CDs ever, in terms of the recording and mixing, so in his mind literally no point trying to compete with it.

      • Ken Evans says:

That makes sense thanks. Neil Young has said that he really regrets recording most of his albums from about 1988 through 2003 directly to redbook.

  12. Rob says:

Worth the admission price on its own. Wonderful to listen to. Thanks for sharing, Paul.

  13. Josh says:

That organ sounds like it came straight out of Bob Dylan’s “Is Your Love In Vain?”! That is fantastic, and something that I never thought I’d heard in Tears For Fears’ music.

  14. Tom m hans says:

Ohhh, a new outtake from Sgt. Pepper, wonder why it was not included in the box set as a download couple of years ago. Did they just find it while rummaging through Paul’s archive?
    Great version.

  15. Andrew M says:

Wow, I love this. Absolutely fantastic to hear…….

    Thanks Paul.

  16. -SG- says:

Interesting stuff… this demo makes the song sound so much more ordinary. My one question for you Paul is, I remember reading on the liner notes on the Woman in Chains single about My Life In The Suicide Ranks, and how it was taken from a long jam session and there was a lot more recordings from where that came from. Was there any truth to that? And what exactly did that song develop from? I’ve always wondered about that era of the creation of SOL as it really veered in sound from anything else they were doing. Almost like they were working through a period of frustration. Obviously that material if it ever existed was not deemed releasable, but is there anything else that actually resembles a song or was that simply a one off thing?

  17. Craig Hedges says:

It really needs John, Paul and George harmonising. Look forward to a mashup with the vocals from ‘Because’ on YouTube soon.

  18. Mike the Fish says:

Interesting to hear some of they key ingredients and yet how far they had to go still! Did Roland have a clear idea of what he wanted it to sound like at the start or did they just work at it until it sounded ‘right’?

  19. Chris Hopkins says:

    That’s awesome

  20. patjoller says:

Epic track, so cool to hear it like that.

  21. Kauwgompie says:

This sounds great. Thanks Paul, I’m so excited about this box!

  22. Nuno Bento says:

Getting psyched for this! What a phenomenal release this box will be.

(if only they included a properly remastered Going to California…)

  23. Marc says:

    Hi Paul and everyone,

initially Amazon NL offered the 4CD/BLURAY box for 18,99 euro, – still not cancelled- .
Now the price is 30,66 euro. Don’t know if this will hold, but it is by far the cheapest.
It might be a good idea to include Amazon NL in the list, they have some great prices at times.

    • mike says:

They only appear to deliver to NL addresses, which is good for them!

    • Kauwgompie says:

I bought it for €18.99 as well. It was that price for at least 2 weeks, maybe more. It was their number 1 selling cd during that time and advertised as such. It’s hard to believe they don’t honor that. It seemed it was sort of a promotion to draw attention to Amazon.nl which only recently started operating. Still today they sell it for €30 which is obviously far below the other Amazons.

      • Larry Davis says:

Hey!! I tried ordering the box from Amazon Holland…it’s still 30.66 Euros, nice…but they are not shipping to the US…I guess you were able to still as you may still have a Dutch address, even tho you moved to New Jersey!! Good thing I still kept my UK order up & didn’t cancel before trying to order from Dutch Amazon…but anyhoo, that mix is pretty epic Paul…

    • Chdx says:

Hi Marc, thanks for the tip, no brainer at this price: scored mine for 30,66!

  24. Alan Jones says:

Pure enjoyment. Found myself in silent karaoke land throughout. Excellent.

  25. Trash says:

I love hearing this kind of thing:
    – early mixes that show the development of the song
    – Instrumental versions that allow you to hear elements that often get buried under the vocals (the deluxe editions of the XTC albums feature instrumental versions that are a real revelation – they allow you to really appreciate the detail that goes into the arrangements).

This has really increased my anticipation of the release (not that it wasn’t high already).

Also a quick plug for Paul’s SDE shop – I’ve ordered a number of things over the years and have always been pleased with the quality of the packaging (I’m looking at you Amazon), the fact that things always get delivered on time AND they have never let me down in terms of stock (again I’m looking at you Amazon!).

    Cheers
