Cabaret Voltaire / Methodology '74 / '78 Attic Tapes vinyl box

7LP clear vinyl box • Includes signed print • Limited to 500 copies • Comes with hi-res audio download

Methodology ’74-’78. Attic Tapes is a new, highly limited 7LP box set of clear vinyl records that charts the development of Sheffield’s electronic music pioneers Cabaret Voltaire.

The audio in this set starts from their early experimental period of 1974 and 1975 and this set features the original recordings of tracks such as ‘Nag Nag Nag’, ‘No Escape’, ‘The Set Up’, ‘Baader Meinhof’, ‘Here She Comes Now’ and ‘Do The Mussolini (Headkick)’. These would all later be re-recorded with new equipment and released by Rough Trade in the late ’70s.

If you’re a vinyl buyer/collector, this package appears to tick all the boxes; it is very limited (only 500 units), the records are pressed on clear vinyl, you get a hi-res download and each box set comes with a signed print!

Methodology ’74-’78. Attic Tapes is released on 6 December 2019.

  1. Bob D says:

This is fantastic ! What box sets should be . The music and no 200 page coffee table book to jack up the price . The Cabs have always ruled .

  2. poptones says:

Excellent release. As John Murray mentioned, the Sheffield scene ruled in the late 70s with the Studs, Cabaret Voltaire, Clock DVA, The Future, Human League, etc.

  3. roboter says:

but CODE album in deluxe remastered edition ?!

    • Martyn Alner says:

Now THAT would be good! And Groovy Laidback and Nasty, which has an undeserved reputation for being lightweight.

  4. Martyn Alner says:

I would love that, but it’s too expensive for me at present. Luckily I have the CD version.

Bizarrely when I was in Spillers Records in Cardiff a few weeks ago they played ‘The Single’. I wonder what customers thought as it’s very strange!

  5. Dr Volume says:

Looks tasty. I have the CD box and it’s a really good collection and as Caroline says they got some surprisingly decent sounding results from their primitive 70s kit. I like some of this music better even than some of the earlier album tracks as they’re a bit more pared down and a bit more playful and absurdist. Certainly if you dig early Cabs you need this. NB according to the Mute website it’s not signed by the whole band, just Richard H.Kirk

  6. John Murray says:

I was lucky enough to live in and around Sheffield in the late 70’s and early 80’s when The Cabs (alongside the Mark 1 Human League) we’re putting on some fantastic multi media shows and musically pushing on from the constraints of punk rock. Some great memories, and this set looks like a great insight into those early first steps of a great band.

  7. Jhonn says:

Great news, thx. Amazon UK already sold out.

  8. Caroline says:

I have the original 3CD edition of this and it’s absolutely thrilling stuff, well beyond the usual standard for early/outtake releases of this type. The recordings may be comparatively primitive but the invention and imagination absolutely shines.
