Caravan: The Decca/Deram Years (An Anthology) 1970-1975 / 9CD box set

Studios albums • Bonus tracks • 2 discs of live at the BBC & more

Universal Music will issue a nine-CD box set that features expanded editions of English ‘Canterbury scene’ band Caravan‘s albums recorded for the Decca/Deram labels in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The Decca/Deram Years (An Anthology) 1970-1975 features five studio albums all of which include bonus tracks such as demos, single mixes and alternates.

Additionally, this collection features The Story of Our Lives: Live At The BBC 1970-75, two-CD of live at the BBC performances largely from radio shows such as ‘Sounds of the Seventies,’ ‘John Peel’s Sunday Concert,’ and ‘BBC In Concert.’ Another live album, 1974’s Live At Fairfields Halls completes the nine discs.

The discs are housed in eight gatefold card sleeves, featuring original album art and sit alongside a 48-page booklet with notes detailing the history of the band.

The Decca/Deram Years (An Anthology) 1970-1975 is issued on 6 September 2019.

  1. roboter says:

    the remastering is old (2001)

  2. Otto M says:

Sinclairs and Coughlan’s daughter had zero say on it, the Hastings perhaps. Once again another quick cashgrab from Universal while the going’s good despite the impending box set to end all coming from Madfish in a year’s time – a box set for diehards yes but one presented with consent of the original band members unlike Universal’s recurring operations.

The debut is not in there because UMC lost the rights they had previously held on license. The other side is still Sony, a firm that don’t really care for their vintage assets, but recently have been told that the band may have recovered the lost rights through their old manager.

  3. stephen gilmour says:

Paul – for us Aussies – is there going to be a JPC or an Amazon USA link soon – can i get alerted when there is? Thanks

  4. mpb says:

Madfish are making a caravan box? hm… well, as a Madfish box customer i have to say, Madfish boxes are a DRAG. they’re crazy-expensive. typically the bulk of the contents are recycled. the family studio box had 3 discs that had 2 songs (>8 minutes) each on them, and they still managed to miss out on 2 b-sides. the family BBC box was hawked with “unrealeased” tracks that turn out to be OFF-AIR broadcasts of album cuts (!) with DJ intros, and an entire cd which was on the other box (as a “live” album). the hillage box had 8 or so cds of amazing new stuff… amazing enough to extort me for the other 14 cds AGAIN. i’ve been fans of these groups for a long time. who else would splash out on this stuff? but such marketing is an abuse fan-base goodwill… if not the environment. Madfish knows this. i love caravan too. but there’s no point in regurgitating the familiar material again. it’s a WASTE OF PLASTIC. just please sell the “new” stuff. sorry paul, as i see you’re trying to move some hillage boxes. i thought of getting another one for the signature, but i gotta save up for caravan next year. :(

  5. Barrie Sillars says:

Interesting in Universal releasing this now, as Madfish (behind such massive boxes by Steve Hillage, Wishbone Ash and Family) are planning a huge 30 disc box for later next year which will include all this plus lots more. It will be pricey though!

  6. Jan says:

Isnt it a bit overkill? Who needs that?A 4-Cd compilation has been released 9 years ago.

  7. Saxon Dave says:

Given the fact I only own 2 albums right now out of these 9, I don’t mind if I will have two copies of those. :) Fantastic looking box set, and the price is quite fair, given the fact it includes 9 albums, and book, etc. Caravan deserves it!

  8. mpb says:

odd that the 1st s/t album (originally on Verve/MGM) is not in this set. it was part of the original group of cd remasters. is the Verve catalog owned by someone else now? maybe that’s got something to do with why they left off the ’68 tracks from the bbc discs.
some of the bbc tracks were edited on the original “show” cd. maybe the omission makes room for unedited versions? that could be nice.

  9. Dan says:

I assume their 1968 self-titled debut was not a Decca release (all music lists as Decca/Verve)?
I have the Decca box “The World is Yours” which I really enjoy and has tracks from the debut. Seems odd to be omitted.

  10. David B says:

It seems that this re-issue is using the 2001 remasters . .so no new sonic upgrade then . .shame ..

  11. johneffay says:

I like Caravan a lot, so I’ve already got all this. However, even I didn’t I don’t think I’d bother. You can pick up all of this fairly easily for £50 or less. Admittedly in jewel cases and without the booklet, but an asking price of £65.98 seems a bit steep to me.

  12. Simon George says:

I have the ITLOGAP 40th Anniversary edition which not only has these demo versions, live tracks from John Peel and Video from Beat Club but also 5.1 and new stereo mix by Steven Wilson (as at 2011). Is the stereo mix that is in this box set the SW version?

However I might just buy the box and slot in the version I have, if there is room? I only have original CDs of the other studio albums so this should be better sound quality.

  13. Wayne C says:

Would have bought this for sure if released on vinyl, I saw them on “yesterday” channel on a Prog At the BBC a few months back and really liked “The Dog, The Dog he’s at it again” which was part of the programme. Bought the “Plump in the Night album” the day after seeing that. No doubt I will buy this if I get a deal alert from Paul in the months to come!!.

  14. Taffey Lewis says:

Caravan in their prime. I’m particularly fond of the lineups including Richard Sinclair. This is a set I will definitely buy. By all appearances this is exactly how a boxed set should be presented. I would also love to see a combined Hatfield & the North / National Health boxed set.

  15. pupton bluton says:

This is a nice looking set, especially the replica sleeves, but as others have said, there’s nothing new here musically and you can still buy the 2001 albums separately on Amazon for £5 apiece, so not sure who this is really going to appeal to. I’d rather see reissues of the post-Deram albums, many of which are unavailable on CD unless you’re prepared to pay through (grandad’s) nose.

  16. JB says:

They cut the first two songs from the original Show of Our Lives release, from December 31, 1968. I wonder if it’s because they are labeled “off-air recordings?”

  17. Ran says:

Any info on the remastering / remixing / provenance of this boxset?

  18. Francesco says:

Superb box set but way too late. As has already been said, no unreleased tracks amongst the bonuses but a good way of getting these albums all in one place for anyone who doesn’t already have them.

  19. Simonf says:

This has made my day! They must have read my mind; only the other day I was thinking how wonderful it would be to have a box set of Caravan albums and now it’s going to happen!

My Caravan collection currently consists of a worn, battered, much played and much loved copy of the 1976 double compilation Canterbury Tales The Best Of Caravan and a slightly less worn copy of Blind Dog At St. Dunstans’, so this is all great news, and although I have officially run out of storage space for any more box sets, I’m gonna somehow make room for this beauty.
Excellent news and an excellent package.
Think I’ll give Canterbury Tales another spin tonight to celebrate.

  20. JF Verreault says:

Not 100% sure, but from a quick glance at the bonus tracks on each album, I don’t think there’s a single unreleased track on this set; they’re all available on the previous “expanded editions” released a few years ago. That said, this is FANTASTIC music!!
