Sony’s Legacy Recordings are to issue Elvis Presley A Boy From Tupelo: The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings, a three-CD deluxe set that includes “every known Elvis Presley Sun Records master and outtake”, radio sessions and other related rarities.
Disc one of this set includes the masters Elvis recorded for Sun Records, some variations, and the four songs he paid for himself, known as the Memphis Recording Service Acetates. These pre-date his signing for Sun. The songs are My Happiness/ That’s When Your Heartaches Begin (recorded July 1953) and I’ll Never Stand in Your Way / It Wouldn’t Be the Same (Without You) (recorded January 4, 1954)
Disc two covers all known outtakes. Because there have been so many Elvis reissues and box sets over the years, most of these have been issued somewhere along the line, but despite this Sony still manage to unearth seven previously unreleased outtakes.
The final CD covers all the live and radio recordings “known to exist”. Sony are at pains to stress that behind the making of A Boy From Tupelo – The Complete 1953-55 Recordings lies more than 1,500 hours of restoration work and almost 200 hours of additional studio time devoted to the painstaking remastering of the material. The results, they claim, are “stunning”.
This physical package includes a 120-page book designed as an illustrated travelogue and datebook chronicling Elvis’ early career via facts, anecdotes, memorabilia and many rare photos.
A 12-inch vinyl LP will also be issued which includes Elvis’ complete single A and B-sides for Sun Records, plus additional songs recorded at Sun Studio and released on his landmark self-titled debut album in 1956.
Both the three-CD deluxe package and the vinyl LP will be issued on 28 July 2017

For those of you questioning the value of this package, permit me to put your mind at ease. While the FTD version was a first-class deluxe edition, be thankful that Sony saw fit to give this a consumer version release. The original is going for big money on the secondary market. This collection was the passion project of Ernst Mikel Jorgensen, the man charged by Sony with supervising Elvis’ recorded works and releases. He told me in 2005 he was working on this. I can assure any doubters that he left no stone unturned and no lead unfollowed in his efforts to make this package the absolute last word on Elvis’s Sun years. You can debate about what era of Elvis is the best, but there’s no denying that 1953 to the end of 1955 changed the course of music. This collection captures every possible available master, alternate take, live version, photo and press clipping. I owned four different Sun-related collections prior to getting A Boy From Tupelo. It eclipses them all. Don’t quibble over the cost. Just buy it. You will not regret it.

Any word on Amazon US’s delay in offering this? I keep checking but they only shoe download.
Why wait for a cheap public domain release with a really grotty sound when you can have a quality release like this which is likely to sound great. I hardly think that £24.99 is a lot to pay for 3 discs and a 120 page book.

I would say that £24.99 for three discs *is* a lot when you consider that the 4cd ‘Complete 50’s Masters’ set is only £16.99.
Oops – *5cd*, which compares even more unfavourably with the new set…
Fair enough if cheap is your only criteria, personally I’d rather pay a bit extra and get a better sound and this set will be an improvement on the 50s box if the same mastering as the FTD set is used.

This is just a cheap edition of the 2012 FTD release. Without the coffee table book.
But it does have one additional track (the October 29, 1955 performance of I Forgot To Remember To Forget) that was discovered shortly after the original release.

Since I don’t have any of the other collections that are mentioned, I’d get this. But I think “complete” is a misnomer, since I’m pretty sure not all of the Louisiana Hayride performances are included (even allowing for duplicate song appearances).
Also, despite the “more than 1,500 hours of restoration work and almost 200 hours of additional studio time devoted to the painstaking remastering of the material”, they can’t definitively determine the source of the live material? Any number of fansites would have been willing to help, I’m sure.
Hello. The only Louisiana Hayride performance not included is his final appearance on December 15, 1956 which is readily available on other releases (Elvis FTD, Young Man With The Big Beat, etc) and outside the scope of this project.
I should stated “only other known/surviving Louisiana Hayride performance” above.
