Glenn Frey’s and JD Souther’s Longbranch / Pennywhistle album from 1969 will be issued as standalone CD and vinyl editions in September.
The album was recorded in 1969 in California (after the pair had moved from Detroit to California) and issued on the Amos label. While the country rock/folk outfit were short-lived, Souther would go on to co-write a number of great Eagles songs, such as Best of My Love, New Kid in Town and Heartache Tonight.
This album was first issued on CD in May this year as part of Glenn Frey‘s Above The Clouds set. That package wasn’t overly expensive, but if you just want the Longbranch/Pennywhistle album you can now order it by itself! In addition to the standalone CD a vinyl version pressed on 180g black vinyl will also be available.
Longbranch / Pennywhistle will be reissued on 28 September 2018.

Nice! I got this album when my friend Paul undertook a long road trip through America (1973/4). He also brought with him the Shiloh album (Don Henley/Al Perkins/Jim Ed Norman c.s.), The Rockets (Crazy Horse), assorted early Nitty Gritty Dirt Band records and quite a few others I can’t remember straightaway.
Those were the days, a friend willing to browse record-bins with a list you provided (together with the needed dollars), looking for albums he never heard of. Thanks again, Paul!
Would anyone know if this stand alone is the same remixed and remastered version which was in the box set?
Looks like a 70’s Loggins & Messina album cover (especially the font). Can’t remember which album though.
Has Frey and Souther. Should be pre-Eagles interesting.
This is good news. The Longbranch Pennywhistle record is has been one of my Holy Grails but I didn’t know if I wanted to have the boxset because I’ve already got Glen’s Solo Collection CD & the Live CD. Now I know I shall not buy the boxset.
Nice cover, packaging looks good, will check the music out and consider as possible purchase.
