Marillion’s Misplaced Childhood deluxe edition gets limited repress

Marillion / Misplaced Childhood 5-disc deluxe edition

Final chance to acquire this superb set a ‘normal’ price

The superb, previously out-of-print, 4CD+blu-ray deluxe edition of Marillion‘s Misplaced Childhood is now available again in limited quantities!

This set features a 2017 remaster of the original album, a lossless 5.1 remix of the album created by producer, musician and surround maestro Steven Wilson, a concert from Holland across two CDs (including Misplaced Childhood performed in its entirety) and a disc of demos and rarities “remastered exclusively for this set”.

On top of all this great content, the blu-ray delivers an hour-long documentary about the album and promo videos for the singles Lavender, Kayleigh, Lady Nina (which was the A-side to US EP Brief Encounter) and Heart Of Lothian.

The entire five-disc deluxe edition is presented in a case-bound ‘bookset’ that includes a 60-page booklet with sleeve notes written by Dave Everley.

There are only 2000 0f these available for the whole of Europe, so don’t miss out this time around and place an order with the SDE shop using this link or the button below. Read the SDE interview with Steven Wilson about his 5.1 mix of Misplaced Childhood.

Stock is available shortly so these will ship next week.

  1. Daniel Emond says:

    Paul,

First time order from SDE. Very impressed by the service and quick turnaround. Delivered to my place in 4 days from England to Canada!

Hopefully will renew this experience when the Fugazi box comes out!

    Cheers

    Daniel

  2. Michael says:

If I wouldn’t visit your page at least once a day I probably would have completely missed out on this opportunity to get one. The day you posted this, it was already sold out in your shop so I preordered one from Marillion’s store. The box arrived save and sound today and now I finally have all of them and my collection is complete unless they release some more albums in that format. After seeing Marillion live during the Misplaced Childhood Tour (1986) and a second time at their Clutching at Straws Tour (1987) I’ve completely lost interest in them after Fish left the band and I’ve never gave them another listen until now. Love their stuff and Afraid of the Sun is a beautiful album. Thank You for your fantastic reviews, they really get me discovering again. I understand we live in different times today, but you almost transport me back in time so I can almost feel like that little adventurous kid inside a record store that I once was. Cheers!

  3. John says:

Received my set yesterday. Many thanks Paul! I played the first disc last night and it brought back to me why I was ambivalent about this record all those many years ago…Some excellent material and (for my taste) some tedious sacarin pop songs. Kayleigh is the very bottom of the pile..

It is however a lovely set and very well considered in compilation..

    Thanks for the tip,Paul.

  4. Thilo says:

JPC.de lists it today, claims the it will be available within one week. It‘s 29,99€, so probably you can give a chance.

  5. Shaun says:

Received this morning. Great packaging.Thank you. Unlike some I have never had issue with Amazon’s packaging, just the sheer amount of it. Really glad to have this finally as I saw them premiere the album at The Hammersmith Odeon back in 1985. Several dealers were selling this on Discogs this morning for around £80!

  6. Tomasz Janosz says:

    Hello Paul,
I see some people have already got a Marillion box set. Unfortunately to this day I I haven’t received a confirmation of this album being sent to my e-mail address (order #SSD24708). I ordered a box set on 2nd of October. I decided to choose the safest method of shipment (tracked and signed). Please tell me, if there is a chance to ship the parcel next week? It’s very important to me because it’s a gift for my wife of the wedding anniversary (14 th of October).

I will be grateful for your response.
    Have a nice weekend,
    Tomasz.

  7. Chris B says:

    Paul,
I am a long time subscriber to your site. Received my MC box from you this morning. Others have mentioned how well you package the items and I now have confirmation for myself.
First time I have ordered from you but will not be the last.
    Cheers
    CB

    • Paul Sinclair says:

      Many thanks Chris.

      • Carl says:

I can only echo what Chris B says.
Thanks for the opportunity to purchase from you Paul. I’m already listening to the 5.1 mix for the third time. The Kraftwerk Coloured vinyl that i received around the same time haven’t had a look in yet!.

On that note, please can you have a word with Amazon on how to Package orders as they could do with some pointers?.
        Great site,
        Carl

    • Steven Horsler says:

Thanks Paul. Enjoying it right now

  8. John says:

I thought that I was hallucinating when I saw the green button earlier! Very well done Paul!

Jump in those who had given up hope…

Should you come by the other special editions please let us know…

    Best wishes….John…

    • Ian Bullock says:

As a newbie to the shop and having placed my first order on the Misplaced Childhood set, do you send out an email when items are dispatched, Paul? I am nervous of the vagaries of international shipping in these Covid affected times, so I’d like to at least know my box is on its way.
      Cheers.

  9. Wow how did you manage to get more of these?..thank you and looking forward to this .great work paul

  10. John says:

Thank you for obtaining these,Paul. Might well have passed me by otherwise . Fortunate to obtain one last evening.

I was rather unsure of Marillion first time around..As a dyed in the wool old progger I found them a little lightweight..although I bought all the albums.Sorry to have missed the special edition of ‘Straws’ as it contains a concert at the Edinburgh Playhouse that I attended..

  11. Spiral Scar says:

Many thanks Paul, for this alert. I was reluctant to spend insane prices for this elsewhere, after staying on the fence too long when this first came out. The last thing I thought I’d hear about was news of a tiny re-press. I rarely get on the computer before work (the coffee kicks in too slowly) but I did yesterday, and, well… I woke right the **** up! So little time to spare after grabbing a copy that I’m getting around to say thanks today. And I see it’s gone again. Shopping ain’t what it used to be but it would be a heartbreaking nightmare without a site that “gets me” like SDE does. Congrats to anyone else who managed to procure this set during that brief window of opportunity.

  12. Glenn Schryver says:

Nabbed one! Many thanks for your awesome work Paul!

  13. Brian says:

Thanks Paul – order placed! Was just stunned that shipping to U.S. is almost as much as the discs themselves – WOW!

    • Paul Sinclair says:

Sorry… not going in my pocket, I can assure you.

      • Brian says:

Oh I know – not blaming you at ALL! Was just venting/surprised. Guess I better get used to it as I plan my entertainment budget for next year. Keep up the great work – my wallet is lighter but me ears & head are MUCH happier! :-)

      • azuro says:

Thanks Paul. I love your site and think you do a wonderful job for us music lovers . Ordered a copy of MC and suggested a friend do so as well which he did. Thank you.

      • Jabber says:

Nothing to apologize for regarding shipping to the US Paul. I figure for the price I pay to get something from you not offered here, it makes up for all the time I would have to spend each day checking numerous music online magazine website to find what SDEs are in the pipeline. And I’d still miss 90% of the offerings out there if it wasn’t for your site. Gladly buy from you periodically to keep your site up and running. Who else would post sometimes three and four SDE offerings a day without a cast of writers. Keep up the excellent work, and well informed track listings (plus links)!

  14. neil haggar says:

    Nice post Paul.
My favorite (& only) Marillion album. I’ve worn out 2 vinyls, so this is most welcome. Especially with all the extra`s.
    Cheers.

  15. jmm says:

Not that much of a “normal” price after adding overseas shipping for almost as much as the boxset itself, but worth it nonetheless.

    • wahmbeck says:

      I was too late. :-(
It’s really a nuisance with these limited editions. But I am sure that the box will be available very soon for 100 Euros on ebay or discogs.com. Irony off.

  16. Leo says:

    Ordered – -thanks Paul

  17. jazzydog says:

Thanks Paul – ordered. Switched to here to give a bit of support

  18. Billy Jinchereau says:

Now available directly from Marillion at marillion.com!

  19. Stephen says:

Missed out in the morning. Ordered in the evening. Thank you.

  20. Chris Lancaster says:

Thanks, Paul; ordered. Very pleased, as my original copy fell foul of the “tripping over one of our cats while carrying a pint mug of tea” incident last year. That was very bad news for several of my Marillion box sets, as well as a few on the shelf below, which now have a brown hue they didn’t have when they left the factory.

  21. Brixet says:

Great that so many are being fulfilled by this repress. But also odd that so many obviously huge fans didn’t bother buying this first time round. I recall reading the news piece on here and then casually pre-ordering a few days later. (Ditto 5 Years…)

    • just jake says:

Hi Brixet – agree it is odd and in hindsight it does seem strange that so many of us faffed in getting this set when it is clear from some of the comments that we have grabbed the other deluxe sets on the week of release. It is clear that i was not alone in kicking myself once the original pressing sold out and the scalpers started ramping up the prices.

But i am very glad that i have got this second chance.
Ditto for the Tears for Fears boxsets as well

  22. Kauwgompie says:

    Thanks Paul, ordered!!

  23. John Orr says:

Yep, ordered as well. Always a pleasure Paul.

  24. AlanB says:

Thanks have ordered here rather than Townsend appreciate the website and Pauls efforts

  25. Jabber says:

THANKS PAUL! Nabbed one. From the other side of the pond, I’m doing the “Carlton” dance! Oops, too old – just threw my back out again. More time to sit around and listen to SDE’s. Can’t wait for the postage to come back down (at least partway), so I can support your independent shop more often. Cheers, Paul!

  26. si Rogers says:

Yiphee just got one after looking for one for years does very bad dad dancing around keyboard

    • Ashley says:

Hi,I bought the original one of these, how different in terms of packaging will these be?& how can you tell which one is the first press?

      • Paul Sinclair says:

        They should be identical

        • Phil Robinson says:

Hi Paul, if you look at the picture above and compare it to the original pressing as featured on your very fine web site by doing a quick search for marillion they do appear to be different on the spine area.

  27. GentleRabbit says:

Order placed with you, Paul! *does happy dance*

Had my order placed elsewhere but owe a lot to SDE and wanna support your enterprise. Stay safe amongst all that’s going on in the UK, please. We need you about

  28. Jazzydog says:

Just in case Paul can’t get anymore, as of 10am Friday Townsend records have some

  29. AlanB says:

Hi Paul any more in stock?

  30. Steve Ballinger says:

Seems I saw this too late, regrading Misplaced Childhood. If anymore become available I will definitely order.

  31. Daniel emond says:

Is it already out of stock?

  32. Colin says:

It’s available on townsend music web site

  33. Glenn says:

Still available on official Marillion website.

  34. David says:

Thanks for the update, Dave… sounds good…

  35. Nick Doggett says:

Jeepers, that was quick! Can they print 3000 instead, I’m well gutted I’ll never be able to afford the second hand price, I wonder how many of these have been bought to make a killing whilst us Pauper fans go without again!

  36. Mathew Lauren says:

This was available early this a.m. when I woke here in L.A., but as I check back (now), the allotment is already out of stock :(

I want to congratulate SDE for scoring this 5.1 SDE re-press.

This SDE contains a wonderful 5.1-mix of an album that (I feel) has broad appeal!

I’m very happy for those of you that scored one of these 5.1 SDEs today, but implore “the powers that be” to do a “hearty-run” of this 5.1 SDE set — and not just limit the distribution to Europe!

(Maybe I’d even p/u another one. In fact, I know I would!)

This (STEVEN WILSON) 5.1 mix is one of his best (IMHO), and its (the 5.1) gotten such great reviews, that I’ve no doubt that it will sell-out (again) – and now it looks like it did!

(Anyway, regardless of its current status, such a small-run WILL sell-out quickly)

More allotment and distribution of this 5.1 SDE, as well as some OOP TULL (hint hint, IAN – “TAAB” 5.1 and “Benefit” in a 5.1 SDE bookset) for example, is GOOD thing!

…and of course, c’mon UMe, set “Layla…” (ES 5.1) free in a “lossless” format!

This re-press, however, is a small-step in the right direction!

Let us keep up DEMAND (and requests) for more quality, (NEW) surround-sound albums!

    Cheers, ALL!

  37. Robert says:

I have two questions : Is this boxset still available ? Is the SDE-Shop the only shop where I could have bought this set ?

  38. Just Jake says:

damn, just too late. Missed out last time by faffing about and thinking there would be plenty of time to buy it. Boy was i wrong. Hope you can get some more in Paul. cheers.

  39. The Alien says:

Some copies apparently still available from Townsend Music.

Quite a bit with postage to Australia, though… does anybody have any experience with Townsend’s shipping/packaging quality and reliability? Want to order but worried re receiving damaged product. Also hoping from more copies from SDE.

  40. Dieter Marchsreiter says:

    Needs another reprint! :)

  41. Chris Bennett says:

Also opened email as soon as received. Too late. Would like to know if you get any more in please.

  42. Nigel says:

Is anybody else noticing the increasing amount of previously limited edition releases being re-released?
There seems to be little or no point making these items limited if you are going to release them again a few years later.
Sorry to say I am also starting to get fed up purchasing what is described by money grabbing record companies as so called definitive limited edition, collector’s edition, super-duper edition limited, never before available in this format, limited edition.
How many times do record companies think Joe public will fork out their hard earned cash on the ultimate limited edition collector’s box set (now reissued for the last time ever but includes never before heard vocal sung by ‘whichever artist’ whilst sitting on the toilet or singing in the shower)?
Limited should mean limited, not we will reissue again.

    • Paul Sinclair says:

Damned it you do, damned if you don’t. There was recently a discussion about ‘why don’t record companies reissue in-demand box sets’ on SDE. Stuff like Bowie’s Five Years, and this Marillion repress fits into that category too. Unless you are planning to sell off your entire record collection to fund your pension in old age, I really don’t see the problem with this. I’m not going to enjoy owning my 2017 pressing of this any less, now that I know 2000 more people own a copy. Anyway, the definition of ‘limited’ is a grey area anyway. It was available in limited quantities for a limited time period. So it was limited. Just because 3 years later they are making some more, doesn’t change the fact that in 2017 it was limited and sold out.

      • Barry says:

        It’s an interesting point.

I didn’t think this was ever marketed as a limited edition; indeed, returning to the original SDE news item, there’s no mentioned of a one-off run, limited numbers etc. _except_ that in the comments, someone posted that Fish’s online store mentioned that they were told by Parlophone that it was “…a limited product so we are only doing one factory run! Once it’s gone, it’s gone “. Not exactly broadcasting from the rooftops.

I missed the first release as I waited to pick up later (I try not to buy too much at once otherwise I know I won’t listen to it). If I’d known it was limited, I’d have grabbed it immediately, so this re-run is welcome.

        • mike says:

I think the only people who care about the issue are people who buy music to sell it on, which I am not condemning as we all have to make a living, but people can hardly complain at £30 for a 5 disc set, which is clearly great value.

        • CJ Feeney says:

The exact same comments have been made about Richard and Linda Thompson’s set. Andy Batt said more would be pressed if demand existed, the UMC statement said it was sold out, and no replacements sets would be available from retailers. There is “wiggle room ” in these statements, and some people like to convnince themselves they have a limited edition, and ebay sellers and record companies are slow to contradict them if it encourages sales at higher prices.

      • Howie says:

Perhaps the record companies are looking at the resale/scalper prices which these are going for on eBay and thinking something’s wrong here as they seem to be the ones making the least amount of money from the items in question. As somebody who missed out on the original release but managed to grab a copy from SDE yesterday I am certainly glad they are doing this.

  43. ALEXANDRE says:

Where can I buy with shipping to Brasil?

  44. Dave Finch says:

Gone! I do despair with who is running things these days!! Things like this should be catalogue items!! Same with the career spanning box sets, they ALWAYS sell! But i suppose they are more interested these days in putting out overpriced coloured/ pic disc Vinyl than keeping stuff as catalogue!….

  45. Neil says:

Too slow as well. Crossing fingers for tomorrow. Surely if demand is there they can print more!

  46. Christophe says:

Oh my god…too late ? or the link to order will be available in a few hours or next days ??

    I hope so…

  47. Simon George says:

    Thanks Paul

Order accepted – Wow – missed out 1st time around although I have all the other deluxe boxes. Sorry to see that others missed out!

Also looking forward to further JT box sets as I have them all also – only my 3/4th copy of some of them of them over the years (LP, 1st CD, Remaster CD and now deluxe) – I must be a sucker for punishment.

  48. Juerie says:

Nowhere else to order, so I think Paul just found a unopend box from 2017 in his vault. Hahahaha.

Hope to get one, missed it on the first rund and missed it now. Fingers crossed.

  49. John D says:

    Gutted missed it again

  50. Dave says:

Arrrggghhhh!!!! Too late. Press more ye beggars :-)

    • Dave says:

Sorry I didn’t buy my copy from your site, Paul. Panicked and had to make sure! :-). Thanks for a great site and all the great work you do for us.

      • Paul Sinclair says:

No worries… glad you got one, anyway. We’ve sold out and that really is it now… all 2000 have gone.

  51. Chris Lancaster says:

Aarrgghh! Missed it. Flipping work meetings; they ruin everything …

  52. Gary Howell says:

Is it available elsewhere, or did you have all 2000?

  53. David says:

Already selling for silly money on EBay. Really disappointing – I’ve been waiting for this for ages, like many others.

  56. Paul Ward says:

    Sold out already

  57. Steven Sturman says:

    All gone!?

  58. Kevin Aston says:

Paul if you have some tomorrow can we order and pay for these now or do we have to wait for your confirmation, missed this as at work

    • Paul Sinclair says:

Best to wait… I don’t want to be selling stock I can’t fulfil.

      • Christian says:

Timeshedule available when 2nd run will be online ?

      • GentleRabbit says:

Understandable and truly hope you can get some more, Paul.

Also gutted to have missed this sudden opportunity to get this great set… just want to know, if you do happen to get some further copies, will they be put up around the same time of day that these were, just so we can try to check back at the right time?

  59. David says:

    Missed it. Any more??

  60. Dave Sullivan says:

Hi Paul, that was quick, tried to order, all gone ? too slow

  61. christian says:

    Sold out….. :-( :-( :-(

  62. jazzydog says:

They went quick, was looking one minute and then it was gone.Hope you get some more

  63. Stef says:

    Great NEWS!
Any news on the upcoming Fugazi deluxe edition?

  64. jmm says:

    Sold out again? Really? :-(

  65. ian whiteford says:

Thanks Paul. Ordered immediately as missed out on first run ( actually had two faulty copies sent from Amazon and didn’t order a third) really pleased to have this.

  66. Gunther S. says:

Hi Paul, ordered from SDE. Thanks!

  67. David says:

… and wouldn’t it be great if something similar were to happen with the out-of-print Jethro Tull boxes! It’s nice to be able to dream…

    • Dave says:

Dave. Good news is benefit book stlye on the way ok . Also broadsword in pipeline .!!

      • Klaus says:

That leaves only “Thick As A Brick” to be desired…

      • CJ Feeney says:

Re: Tull, there is a post on the “A New Day” FB page, but no offciial announcements on the official Jethro Tull site. Releases are said to be Benefit bookset with material not included in the digpack (2011?), then A almost ready and and Broadsword is in the “early stages” of development. I would expect one of those to be out for Christmas.

But there have been lots of instances of “sort of” announcements from fanzines and magazine interviews over the years – Animals and The Wall surrounds, Seeds of Love on this site. Just because one party says it’s ready, doesn’t mean it going to see the light of day anytime soon. I won’t really believe it until I see it here or on Burning Shed.

As for this set, it’s great (apart from missing the 7″ of Lavender).

I really like the interview format here – sitting with the master tapes playing and letting the music unlock the memories.

      • David says:

Thanks for the update, Dave… sounds good… but boy I wish consideration would be given to re-pressing the boxsets, especially ones like “Minstrel in the Gallery” and “War Child” which can only be had if I cash-in most of my savings.

  68. Marty D says:

Blinding work there Paul. Ordered from your good self as soon as I read the email.
Cheers to you for all the excellent work you put into SDE. I’m somewhat less well off these days but who cares?!

  69. Alexander says:

    Hi Paul,

great news. Is it available only from you?

    cheers
    Alexander

  70. Richard Cosgrove says:

Great news – I’m just in the process of selling my signed copy (I paid £150 for it, having missed the boat the first time round, selling it slightly cheaper to raise funds), so picking one up at this great price means I can hopefully have my cake and eat it too :-)

  71. DaveySussex says:

Brilliant news, I’ve been kicking myself over missing out on this for ages. Copy ordered.

  72. CJ Feeney says:

    A sad day for EBay.

  73. Bruno says:

Nice one Paul – this will complete my set of Marillion original line up boxes. I guess no chance of a signed picture of Fish or the rest of Marillion !! I know you will pack this really well unlike Amazon UK so it will not arrive knackered like my Prince SOTT box set. I should learn my lesson.

  74. Robert Morgenstern says:

Good news for those who missed the Edition. Is the design a little bit different on the spine than the first one?

  75. Steven Roberts says:

Looks like they changed the packaging slightly to denote the re-press (the blue spine).

    • Paul Sinclair says:

Actually, I think that was an early image which turned out to not be totally accurate, so I don’t think this is the case. It should be identical.

  76. Howie says:

    Great news, ordered.

  77. Barry says:

Thanks Paul – I couldn’t order this any quicker.

I waited on the original run and then missed out when it sold out quicker than expected. I have kept an eye on Discogs but it rarely comes up and when it does, it’s often 150 to 180 Euros.

    Made my day.
