    Great news.

And do yourself a favor and read the great Ian Penman’s brilliant The Wire piece on Nina Simone. One of this weeks free articles on Rocksbackpages (You will need to sign up).

  2. Ern says:

I think a fair majority of the extra tracks might have been taken from the compilation Tell It Like It Is.
As that compilation only had 25 tracks, it will be interesting to see what the other extra tracks are.

  3. Ann Coates says:

This might be a stupid question but I’m not a Nina expert… Is there a studio version of Mississippi Goddam? I’ve only ever heard it played live.

    Thanks.

    • Ern says:

Not a stupid question at all.
I have never come across a studio version of the track and in all honesty the live version on the Philips 1964 release In Concert perfectly articulated how she felt at the time. A studio version would never had picked up that emotion.

  4. AndyB says:

Although listed on the box, my original pressing from this set did not contain the last 2 bonus tracks for ‘Sings The Blues.’ Hope it is corrected, but even if not, this set, especially for the price, is pretty amazing!

The Leonard Cohen set in this series is great, too, if you don’t have anything by him. $24 for 11 albums at Amazon US!

  5. Ern says:

The albums released on the Philips label which preceded these albums are just as essential.
Unfortunately the Philips set can be difficult to find and also pricey.

  6. Shane says:

I cant see that there are anything near 35 bonus tracks in the listing above?

    • EW99 says:

If only there was some sort of easily accessible online encyclopedia where one could go to check these things. Oh hang on, according to wikipedia these are the tracks that weren’t on the original versions of these albums.

I make it 36 but that’s near enough to 35 for me.

  7. Ian Skelton says:

I got this set when it was first issued and it is indeed a great place to start. Think there were a few other sets issued by other artists in this series. Worth checking on to see if any are still available.

  8. H says:

Thanks Paul – sorry to admit don’t know a great deal about her work so at this price it’s a cracking introduction.

  9. plasket says:

I hope that if this does well they do more of these. A lot of these boxes have stuff that isn’t available in regular circulation.

  10. MARK LEVY says:

I thought there might have been a vinyl version of this.

    • dominic says:

Music On Vinyl released them individually a few years back. I bought Silk & Soul and Here Comes The Sun (one of my favourite album covers), both still in print, during one of the Amazon.de multi deals Paul alerted us to.

Still tempted to get this as it’s fantastic value, but yes, a vinyl box would have been splendid.

      • António Manuel Santana Araújo says:

“it is finished ‘ has just been reissued by Music on Vinyl for it’s 45th anniversary!!
