Prince / 1999 super deluxe reissue offers a wealth of unreleased material

Six physical formats • 5CD+DVD super deluxe • 10LP+DVD vinyl box • two CDs or 4LPs worth of unreleased ‘vault’ tracks • Live material

Warner Records will reissue Prince‘s fifth studio album 1999 in November across six different physical formats, including a 5CD+DVD super deluxe and 10LP+DVD set, both of which feature 35 previously unreleased audio tracks.

The 1982 album, which features the hits ‘1999,’ ‘Little Red Corvette’ and ‘Delirious’ was a major turning point in Prince’s career, delivering top 10 singles in the pop charts in both sides of the Atlantic (albeit in Britain it was via a double A-side reissue). The groundwork was effectively laid for even bigger success with Purple Rain (which was re-released in 2017).

The reissue of the 1999 album is more ambitious than the already very good Purple Rain set. As well as the remastered album, the 5CD+DVD super deluxe offers two further discs of previously unreleased ‘vault’ material (23 tracks in total), a CD of seven-inch versions and promo edits, a complete live audio performance from the 1999 tour and a DVD containing another complete, previously unreleased concert from the 1999 tour.

Vinyl fans can rest easy (although not their wallets) since the entire 65 tracks of audio on the CD super deluxe is being released as a massive 10LP vinyl box. And the good news is you get the DVD as well (sense prevails).

I have listened to ALL the bonus ‘vault’ audio on this set and there’s some incredible songs and recordings on here, including the early 1982 version of ‘Possessed’ (the later recording has already been a bonus track on the Purple Rain reissue), the full unedited six minute version of ‘Delirious’, an recording of B-side ‘Irresistible Bitch,’ live in the studio takes of ‘International Lover’ (sung without the falsetto) and ‘How Come U Don’t Call Me Anymore?’ and of course loads of completely unreleased songs such as ‘Money Don’t Grow On Trees,’ ‘Rearrange,’ ‘Bold Generation,’ ‘Purple Music,’ ‘You’re All I Want’ and, er, ‘Vagina’. Most of this was recorded in and around 1982.

The live audio performance comes from the late midnight show in Detroit from 30 November 1982. The early show has circulated amongst fans but apparently this later show has never leaked. The DVD offers the 29 December show (recorded in multi-cam) live at the Houston Summit.

As well as the two big sets (5CD+DVD and 10LP+DVD) Warner are also offering a two-CD edition which pairs the remastered album with the disc of seven-inch edits. This version is also available as a 4LP set. While the edits are welcome in the bigger sets, this being the only bonus material on the ‘mid-range’ offerings should all but ensure everyone opts for the super deluxe! As is always the way, the standard (double) remastered album is available as a single CD and a 2LP vinyl set. All the vinyl sets are black vinyl, except the 2LP edition which is pressed on purple vinyl.

As a correction to what was previously stated, the 1999 5CD+DVD super deluxe isn’t actually a large format book but is presented as in a small box. Each disc is held in a separate gatefold sleeve and these slot into the box, alongside a 48-page perfect bound booklet. The booklet has images of tape reels from the vault, rare photos and new sleeve notes from David Fricke, Duff McKagan, Andrea Swensson and Duane Tudahl. The two big sets are distinguished by revamped silver cover artwork. The 2CD, 4LP, CD and 2LP stick with the purple background.

1999 is reissued on 29 November 2019. Follow SDE on Twitter and/or Facebook to stay in touch with this reissue.

  1. Harcourt Fenton Mudd says:

    don’t worry

    I wont hurt you

    I only want

    to be your friend

This 1999 box set is greatly anticipated! Really looking forward to it…..especially as my original double LP disappeared in the big house move of 2008……and my CD doesn’t even have D.M.S.R. on it!

    What is next?

    1) Parade
    2) Sign O the times (might get PEACH coloured discs here instead of purple ones)
    3 Lovesexy
    4) The rainbow children

bring it on! more unreleased tunes please!

I have loved Prince (metaphorically) for 30+ years….long may it continue….. long may he reign.

  2. Ben says:

FYI, as of Sept. 19th, the price for the 5CD/DVD has dropped to $53.38 on Amazon US.

  3. Maxwell says:

@ Max, thanks for the deep discount promo code. It’s highly appreciated. The best price I’ve come across so far.

  5. Max says:

DeepDiscount.com has a 15% off code active (FALL15) until Wednesday 9/18/19 at 1pm eastern. I have just ordered the 6CD/DVD 1999 SDE for $50 shipped to Texas. Personally, DeepDiscount has been reliable over the last 17 years.

  6. wayne A KLEIN says:

    I’d rather have a Blu-ray than DVD.

    • andy says:

Indeed. It’s ridiculous in this UHD disc world that record companies producing $200 box sets would even think about DVD as a format at all. I get that the content would be SD but surely they can use Blu-Ray and/or UHD discs to add more content to take advantage of the capacity.

If you can afford a big box set you can afford $40 for a blu ray player.

    • 2wicky says:

      @wayne A KLEIN
It has been explained before: The source material of the videos is not even DVD standard (720p) but rather 480p – what would be the use of putting that onto a 1080p BluRaydisc?
Use the upscaling option of your BluRay player and you will have exactly the same effect…

  7. wayne A KLEIN says:

Looks promising. Hopefully it’s not brickwalled like the “Purple Rain” release.

  8. Steven Roberts says:

That 6 disc CD/DVD boxset looks sweeeet. Would be great if they could stick to that format going forward with future deluxe reissues (the way that Tull hit upon a workable format with TAAB and then stuck with it for subsequent reissues).

Would be even greater if they were to revisit Purple Rain at some point and reconfigure it to fit in with the other titles (the way that Tull did with Aqualung!)

  9. Guy.S says:

Hi Paul, I am thinking of ordering this from JPC de as they have been very good with their deliveries and packaging so far, but my worry is the date is maybe after we leave the EU, do you know what the outcome of goods already ordered will be, will we get an extra charge or will it just- be a bit late, don’t really want to start any Brexit debate here, just maybe some facts on post. ; )

  10. MüllerMüller says:

In 1999 someone told me about a new promo cd with new remixes of „1999“ – there was a review in the German BRAVO Magazine – i never found this promo!?!?
Itˋs NOT the New Master version!

  11. Liam Gillis says:

Haven’t seen in other posts but Rock It in Poole are doing the 10 LP deluxe version for £175.00 delivered and the CD/DVD version for £60.00 delivered. They have a huge selection of all things Prince. They’re also a brilliant shop for merchandise. And they are a physical store. I have no affiliation with this store, just think they are doing a really good job.

  12. Griffin says:

Nice, thank you Paul S. for this post. Does anyone know why they included the MONO edits? Or what’s the point/sense to include those? I’m still thinking of just to get the 2CD or the 5CD+DVD just for Delirious (full length). If they drop the 2 Mono edits they could fit Delirious (full length) on CD2.

    • Carlos says:

Because CD 2 includes all versions and tracks released as singles and Bsides back in the day. There’s no place for Delirious (full length) on CD 2 as it was never officially released.

      • Griffin says:

@Carlos, thank you for your time to reply. I still don’t get when you have the stereo edit why on earth would you like to listen to the mono edit? There is a Delirius MONO edit. Why is that one on CD2 (not that I want it)
        https://www.discogs.com/Prince-Delirious/release/4265761
If they can put Delirious (full length) on CD2. Then why I buy the 2CD set I can have/own all the edit & full length versions.

  13. Guy.S says:

The 5cd/dvd Deluxe Box Set is £59.99 at HMV to pre-order, though I don’t know what their postage skills are like.

  14. Dylan says:

    Really looking forward to this!
Paul – was just wondering, do you know which of your posts/articles over the years attracted the most comments?

  15. Louis says:

Paul, do you know why (at least so far with 1999 and Purple Rain too) they have not added a HQ surround audio format? let’s say BR audio or DVD audio… In my opinion, the music of Prince would be amazing in surround format.

    • Paul Sinclair says:

I asked about this the last time I chatted to Michael. There’s not an interest/enthusiasm to do this right now for whatever reason but I’m hoping it might happen at some point in the future.

  16. memoryboy says:

Hey guys, thanks for clearing up my confusion regarding thw “Let’s Pretend We’re Married” 12″ Extended Version. I now realize that the album itself contains all full-length or extended versions of the songs. Something I never really noticed or thought about before.

‘1999’ looks to be an extended version itself on the album. I always wondered why they never did an extended mix of ‘1999’, but now it’s clear it was there the entire time.

‘Little Red Corvette’ is a full-length version on the album, so makes sense there is an actual Extended Version elsewhere.

I am very excited to get this as it’s one of the greatest albums from the 80’s and him. I’m already getting excited for the ‘Controversy’ Box Set! Can’t wait for that as well.

    • John M says:

The released full length version of 1999 is in fact edited (there’s a Latin section that was omitted). Would have been good to see this unreleased unexpurgated version on the super deluxe release.

  17. Phil Vellender says:

    Hi all
I have to confess I’m a little confused. Weren’t we all rooting for blu-ray as the preferred option vis a vis DVD? So is this box’s offer of DVD not a step backwards? Maybe I’m missing something. Feel free to set me right!
    Phil

    • Paul Sinclair says:

The quality of the footage is decent but a blu-ray would add nothing in this instance. I don’t think it’s surround sound either, so no advantage there either.

      • Alan Mitchell says:

This is a snippet of the video on the official Prince channel…

        https://youtu.be/udkRI514KSI

Quality on my little phone screen seems okay. I’m sure it’ll be fine on a tv for those that choose to watch the dvd. I’d just like a bluray of the last HitnRun tour with the Hair Bear Bunch edited out of the Manchester gig. I was at that one :)

    • blink says:

Personally I do not care at all whether the box includes a DVD or BluRay disk. What format a disk I watch 0 times has is irrelevant to me (going by how often I watched the video content of other SDEs here…) – and given the age / quality of the footage, it would not matter even if I actually cared for that disk…

  18. Larry Davis says:

Ever since people were suspecting that this 1999 SDE was next on the list, I’ve been licking my chops in anticipation…and yep, it’s as great…or better than I thought it would be…I saw write-ups about these sets a day or two before Paul did his, and my mind was racing on the 1999 piece on SDE, Paul’s reaction & fellow readers…not only that but a new Howe interview too…nice…this might be best reissue/box of 2019 easily…and 1999 is one record that changed my life as a 15 year old kid…seeing him do the title track on US show Solid Gold, with those grand opening chords, lights all flashing & hosts acting all excited Prince was about to be on, introducing him…the song itself blowing my mind…then buying the full album on cassette while on a shopping trip at summer camp, 1983, Great Barrington, Massachusetts, the tape getting all eaten up in my boombox deck multiple times cuz the tape itself being thinner than most cuz of the length of the album, a double…then ordering the album on 2LP vinyl from the Columbia House record club while at college, 1985…the record label being his eye…the original CD a 2CD set to fit all 11 songs, then reduced to one disc but removing DMSR to make room…this was before CDs could fit 70+ minutes of music…then reissuing the album on 1 CD with all 11…ah memories, and everything to do with my personal music buying habits and tastes…1999 the album itself is one of Prince’s best and one of the best of all time by anyone…I would preorder it, but have a feeling the 5CD/1DVD will be on sale everywhere come November 29, so no need to preorder, & hardly any difference between the US & UK preorder price…with Moonbeam Levels on this set, it frees up 4Ever to do with as u wish…not exclusive to that set anymore, better in context on the 1999 set anyway… question, with the 3 Legacy titles (Emancipation, Chaos & Versace) out Friday, and the 1999 set just announced….mmmm, what’s next?? I’m loving this constant engine humming of rollouts… release then announcement…this will be some fall & winter, then my cruise, amazing!!

  19. O(+> Peter B says:

The 6-disc set is beyond what I was hoping 4, I’m so excited (delirious?) about this.

  20. Josh says:

This is going to be amazing! Think I’ll go with the five CD version, as the price is incredible and flipping 10 LPs would probably make me more likely to just stream it anyway… Between this, the R.E.M. Monster release and Abbey Road — gonna be an expensive fall!

  21. Tim Joseph says:

Currently the 5CD/DVD version is only £15 more than the 1CD/LP “Originals” “deluxe” package. I wonder if the overriding of the earlier album backfired on them? I still haven’t bought it.

  22. Eduardo says:

Yesterday I ordered the 2lp edition from the link to Amazon France as soon as I realized they were actually selling the 1999 purple vinyl edition. Today the item I bought has been labeled as unavailable and the info below states that only the first batch of issues will be purple. Should I be afraid of they delivering a black vinyl instead? I am worried because no other Amazon site has announced the purple vinyl variant for sale.

  24. Andrew says:

    Paul,

do you know if the 10 vinyl box will be sold via Amazon UK? I can’t find any listing although they do have the other editions.

  25. madman says:

I’d love to get this on vinyl, but that price is a little steep for me. The CD version, though, is a great price. Especially with all the bonus audio.

  26. Alex Stassi says:

I managed to pre-order the super deluxe 5cd/1dvd last night on Amazon UK for £54.

  27. Kevin says:

Now this is what I call value for money. Nobody can moan about this price. Loads of rarities and yours delivered for £65. No rip off here.

Then I look at the pricing of the Gene Clark set at £140. I know it looks a lovely set but £140. I own every legal Gene Clark issued in the US and UK but will have to pass on this. I will get the 2CD set.

And some of those David Bowie sets……….

  28. stephan says:

    @Paul

I read somewhere that a new interview with Mr Howe the Archivist about this release is due to be posted soon ??
    thanx

  29. Kevin galliford says:

This will be my Christmas present to myself : “To me, Merry Christmas , lots of love , me x”

  30. Johnny Spasm says:

This is a must own. 1999 is far & away Prince’s best album, and probably the greatest funk album ever made. Can’t wait on this one!

    • RJS says:

Whilst it’s not short on funky moments, I’ve never considered 1999 to be a funk album.

      • Alan Mitchell says:

I’ve never considered any of his albums as funk albums as he always threw in the odd ballad and other bits and pieces. It’s why i loved Prince. Took me a long time to understand that other bands tend to stick to one genre and only play 1.5 hour gigs.

        Fuck i miss him.

        • Johnny Spasm says:

Alan, you must be one of his younger fans who is not all that familiar with his early funk. There’s no question that all his albums were funk through 1999. As much as I love 1999, I find Purple Rain a bit confused, specifically the album version of When Doves Cry. The ending, instead of being the funk jam many of his early records had, just came across as, “Oh God, when is this gonna end?” RJS, Lady Cab Driver, DMSR, Automatic, the title track, that’s over 30 minutes of straight funk. What’s your definition of a moment?

  31. memoryboy says:

“Let’s Pretend We’re Married” (12″ Extended Version) seems to be missing. I have a copy if this. That’s the only thing In can see missing.

  32. Chris says:

The comment on the video content being exclusive to the physical box and not appearing on digital download almost confirms that this will appear as a download also. Given that msg previous Prince re-releases have also been released in hi res (24/96) then I would guess there is a good chance that the download of this will also be available as hi-res.

I would love this in hi-res and am not too bothered about missing the video content, so do I hold out for release to see if all 5 CDs appear in hi-res or do I put in my preorder for this to get the better price…….

Any inside info Paul on whether this will be released in 24/96 ?

    • Chris says:

In answer to my own question, I see that qobuz now have the 1999 Live In Detroit track available at 24/88, so I am hopeful the rest will be in hi-res.

  33. Wahmbeck says:

WoW! Great News. Especially the Vault CDs are very interesting. Can’t wait for it!!! :-)

  34. Shane says:

Amazon fr now shows “currently unavailable”. It was a bit cheap… Wonder what will happen to our preorders

  35. Francis Maher says:

No complaints here . Waited so long for this . Will devour this while waiting for the next one . Great price too .

  36. Joseph Stone says:

Purple Rain included a hi-res 24/96 FLAC file of the album, any chance of this?

  37. GentleRabbit says:

Spectacular! Even for us diehards who have hunted down bootleg-quality versions of many of these (often astoundingly good) unreleased tracks, there is a wealth of sparkling bonus material still here to devour.

I suppose the next best thing to having our Prince still down here amongst us really is the advent of these long-awaited archival releases. Please keep them coming, thick and fast.

Are we all ready…? On the one!

  38. Mearsi says:

I believe Prince is talking to my wallet from his Paisley Park in the sky. “Don’t worry, I won’t hurt you. I only want you to have some fun”.
When I read that it was 10LPs I thought I would have to settle for CD as I’m getting fed up with how frequently vinyl needs to be flipped over – but they’ve got a good amount of music on each side. LP box for me.
This recent trend of splitting an old single LP release into a double is annoying me (not talking about 1999 here) as the momentum of the LP is lost. There was an album recently that I wanted to upgrade to the new version, but the double album difference stopped me.

  39. Steven Roberts says:

    Bah, humbug!

It’s a handsome-looking set, and no mistake – but I can’t help feeling for an archival release to merit the title of a “SuperDeluxeEdition” release it should include hi-res or 5.1 options (and preferably **both**).

    Just sayin ‘ :)

  40. Rashers says:

Yet another super deluxe box set that comes in several editions but no blu-ray. Virtually all the CD content could have been included in a 24/96 blu-ray plus the concert in uncompressed sound. Why are the music industry still persisting with 1980s digital audio and 1990s digital video (and of course 1940s analogue audio)?
    A big meh here!

  41. James Barler says:

Come on Paul!! How does the bonus material sound. Do you think they are from a cassette or are the remastered from the original tracks? Just your initial thoughts would help with the excitement. We’ve been patiently waiting for a release like this for a LONG time. Hopefully this will be the start of many great box sets to come! Fingers crossed!!

    • Paul Sinclair says:

Tomorrow, there will be a post where Prince archivist Michael Howe talks through some of these bonus tracks, just for SDE readers :)

      • AndyB says:

Can’t wait. You were very tight-lipped regarding Prince re-releases (or was that Howe?) Please sell your secrets here (although I know you can’t.)

      • Michael says:

Paul wonder why Extraloveable is unfortunately not on this release? It’s a good song.

      • Tom from FIN says:

Fantastic, exclusive news, Paul. Job again well done.

This vault explosion from Prince estate was expected, but this amount of bonuses from 1999 sessions is overwhelming. Is it a world record amongst re-issues, really?

      • Stephan says:

        Great Paul

        Thanx

        ps
I wish that u can question about this one to Howe > When will we get the chance to listen the 1st Version of WHEN DOVES CRY (LOnger & lot more produced version of the song + bass) thanx if u can ?

        • Seth Hollander says:

Seeing this 1999 package has made me think that a second Purple Rain package could come out in the future. The already released one was lovely for the price, but there is so much more that could be released. The summer ’83 gestation of the album tracks in the studio and on stage was ignored on the already released set; there’s easily 2 CDs and a DVD to be pulled from that material. Throw in a deluxe book and a not-so-brickwalled remaster of the album and you have a whole new high-priced product!

  42. Charlie Waffles says:

    Well done, Warner Bros.

Paul, how did you get the chance to listen to all of the unreleased tracks?

    • Paul Sinclair says:

I had a brief chat with Michael Howe about this the other day so the label allowed me to have an early listen.

  43. Alex Cho says:

Sad to think back to a time when Prince had to fight Warners to release a triple LP set (Original Crystal Ball), but that was a very different time – I’d have a hard time affording it myself
    Still, super excited for this!!

  44. william says:

That’s one of the cheapest SDE prices I’ve seen ever for a new release/preorder. Definitely worth it.

  45. STÉPHAN LIMONGI says:

@Paul …..can u say more about the remastering work on the Album himself & more about what the best surprises for u about Vault trax ? Thanx in advance Stephan

  46. Ben Williams says:

Now this is how to make a deluxe edition! Great news!

  47. Paul w says:

This is the best of the best , and great price,, pink floyd you can keep your box set

  48. Sean says:

I haven’t even read the article but “hell, yeah!!!!!!”

  49. MattJames says:

UK orders up at Rough Trade… £180 for vinyl or £65 for Cd.

  50. Miguel Rocha says:

THIS is the motherlode!!! Forget Abbey Road, this is the one I’ll be saving for…an amazing album and a thrilling edition!

  51. Isaías says:

It’s getting later and later. We’re near the end of 2019 and where’s

    TEARS FOR FEARS BOX
    BLONDIE BOX

    ?????

  52. Kevin says:

Yes! This made me so happy! This is a definite must and I have pre-ordered, but did any one else scratch their head after reading the words “Duff McKagan”?

    • Danny says:

Duff is a massive Prince fan and both he and Slash have stayed how much they love the 1999 album in the past. Duff has had a Prince symbol on his bass guitar since Prince died.

  53. Paul Nesmith says:

Very excited about this release, many thanks for the notification, the 5CD+DVD is a must have for me,i will be very interested what the large format book edition looks like although i would have been happy with the same design as the Purple Rain CD Deluxe format
Hoping similar releases for Around The World in a Day,Parade,Sign o the Times,Lovesexy will follow, just have to wait for 29 November now!

  54. Carlos says:

I really like the fact they’re including so much stuff at a really reasonable price. And remember you can find the 4 discs Purple Rain for around GBP 20 ow, so there’s a chance this set will significantly lower in price.

    • Dan says:

The Purple Rain deluxe set was £15.99 when it was released for not much of a saving! On another note, this is too hard to resist, pre-ordered.

  55. What? Prince? Worry! says:

If this was porn…this is would be classed as top notch wank material (once again, I’ll get my coat)

    • mike says:

Excellent! J’agreer and with Prince frankly, a good analogy!

Blinding set and hopefully shows how good Sign Of The Times is going to be (please, please)

  56. Billy Dojcak says:

This is amazing! Been waiting a very long time.

  57. daveid76 says:

I was fully expecting one of the unreleased tracks to have a rude title related to female anatomy, but not one quite as straightforward as this one. Ha ha

  58. Kauwgompie says:

If Paul would make a top 10 list of best box sets of the year again, this would be my number 1. Nothing bad to say about this, except for maybe a missing 5.1 mix which no one really expected anyway. Great album, great extras, exactly what I had hoped for. All the mixes are on here (still disappointed the “Loving The Alien” Bowie box did not have all the remixes) and no less than 2 discs of unreleased material. Simply outstanding. A must have!

  59. MusicFan says:

I’m a massive fan but SEVEN formats is not necessary.

It’s bad for the fans, collectors and not even good for the environment!

I know Warners are losing Prince’s catalogue but to milk money out of fans like this is crazy!

Having the outtakes and the live concert on vinyl isn’t necessary.

I expect most people will just buy the 5CD+1DVD deluxe set as that will have everything.

Not even Purple Rain had this embarrassing number of formats!

    • Paul Sinclair says:

It’s giving people a choice. If labels bundle vinyl and CD together everyone complains, when they don’t do it it’s too many formats! Having said that they probably could have skipped the 4LP. I don’t think that will sell very well.

    • craiged says:

MusicFan. Why the f**k is having the outtakes and live on vinyl not necessary??? I’ve no interest in the CDs but will be pick up the SDE vinyl for sure

    • blink says:

Not sure what your problem with multiple formats is. Fans can pick the format they prefer and their wallet allows, the environment is not negatively affected if people buy 2 CDs instead of 5 Cds plus 1 DVD either. This leaves the collector who somehow things he needs both the SDE and the DE, but then I am not aware of anyone buying releases by an artist that compulsively, so to me we can ignore the 0 – 5 people that may do this.

As to the set itself, it is a good SDE, has everything a goid SDE needs / should have. Now I have to decide whether I am enough of a Prince fan to go SDE or 2CD ;)

    • Alan Mitchell says:

As a vinyl enthusiast i disagree. My preorder will be with Norman Records for the 10 LP set and then at a later date once the cd boxset drops in price I’ll undoubtedly pick that up.

I’ve been waiting a long time to have his albums remastered and i imagine they’ll be brickwalled on cd. Purple Rain cd was terrible and even the LP isn’t a patch on the earlier Rhino reissue. But the Originals LP was mastered by Bernie quite well so i fully expect this to be aswell.

My hifi has been waiting it’s whole life to play Purple Music on vinyl. It’s had to suffer a DJ remix 12″ for the last few years that’s a bit muddy so this is going to sound beautiful.

And I’m not anti-cd by any means as I recently upgraded my player to the Naim CD5si. It’s just i enjoy playing Prince on vinyl. And Kate Bush. But finding really great sounding cds takes some googling (Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories is exceptional by the way). I buy them when they’re on offer or from charity shops.

But back to this release, well let’s hope they don’t do one of these for another twelve months as my wallet doesn’t like it. And I’m also wandering how many people are gonna bother with the six disc Emancipation now. Fingers crossed the price will crash.

    • Freek Claassen says:

It certainly is not bad for the fans, it’s great for the fans! No one in their right mind would buy all 7 formats and if they do I can’t feel sorry for their purses.

  60. Shane says:

Jesus and Mary what a release! I cant believe anyone found reasons to complain! I may buy this as well and im only an occasional Prince fan! Wow!

  61. Steven_Wilsons_Prog_Cat says:

This has given me the horn!, can’t wait to get my hands on it!, purple rain next please with a 5:1 surround mix

  62. Mike says:

Maybe I missed in the article or comments, but did Grundman do the mastering/remastering on this?

  63. Bryce says:

Does anyone know if the version of “Feel U Up” is the long version?

    • Paul Sinclair says:

There is only one version of the original 1981 recording and that is 6.41 (which is longer than the ‘long’ 1986 re-recording anyway!).

  64. John says:

WOW!! Amazing!! My favourite Prince album. Thank you, thank you, thank you Warners…. this is how you do a box set!! Really can’t wait!!!!!!!!

  65. Craiged says:

Paul any idea what the packaging is going to be like for the 10xlp set?

    • Paul Sinclair says:

Not sure at this point. Hopefully a Bowie style box, but will confirm when I know more.

      • Craiged says:

Cheers, am hoping for a Bowie style box with individual sleeves for a each of the sets in it (original, mixes/bsides/vault 1/vault 2/live)

  66. paul says:

looks fantastic and all for only 65 euros for the 5cd blu ray set .i hope the bowie estate take note

  67. Louis says:

Again no HQ surround music? Bluray-audio/DVD-audio

  68. J R Larsson says:

Where is the 96/24 5.1 version on the DVD? That would be the reason I picked it up. Too bad they aren’t following Apple Corps release standard.

  69. Francis says:

I only want to purchase from the UK but no mention of it.

  70. What? Prince? Worry! says:

Take my money you filthy animal

  71. Jim says:

Do we know any more about the vinyl? They had been using Kevin Gray for a while. I’m interested in just the bonus material as the Bernie Grundman cut is unlikely to be topped.

  72. richard says:

looks like a great package, could have personally done without all the 7″edits in lieu of something more interesting instead but i get that they are important to some.
Just curious why 7″ mono promo edits were still being made in 1982?

    • I think they were for AM radio. Like you, I could have done without them – but, who knows, perhaps they’ll be revelatory! Looks like a great set anyway. I’m actually more excited about this than I was about the Purple Rain one… and I was virtually dancing round the room when I heard about that one.

      • What? Prince? Worry! says:

There are a curious listen only. I think the mono was on side b of the stereo a side sent out to radio stations. I doubt all stations back then were broadcast in stereo. I do have these somewhere.

    • Dan says:

What other more interesting content did you have in mind when pretty much EVERYTHING is right there?

  73. Fred says:

    Can’t believe it… Can’t wait til’ November

  74. Eric M. says:

    Paul,

Have you had a listen to any of the remixes/edits? Curious at the inclusion of the “promo-only dance remix edit” of “Little Red Corvette”. The version on the promo 12” single that bears this notation was, sadly, just a slightly edited (intro only) LP Version and not actually an edit of the Dance Remix. Wondering if this will be the same or if it is an unreleased mix.

Beyond excited for this release, regardless!

    • Paul Sinclair says:

Yeah… it doesn’t really have any elements of the dance mix in it, so the name is a bit of a misnomer. It’s a halfway house between album version and 7″ edit as far as I can tell.

      • Eric M. says:

Thanks Paul! Expectations for that one now set correctly lol. I hope these sorts of reissues continue once Prince’s WB catalog goes to Sony.

        • eogan says:

According to the January 13, 1983 recording session details in Duane Tudahl’s “Prince and the Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions: 1983 and 1984”:

“An edited version of ‘Little Red Corvette (Dance Remix)’ was created during this session. The main differences between the edited version of the Dance Remix and the album version can be found at the beginning and end of the tracks.”

“…the ‘Little Red Corvette (Dance Remix edit)’ (4:33) only found its way to a US promo 7-inch. Another edited version (5:53) remains unreleased.”

The Super Deluxe tracklisting’s reference to “(Dance Remix promo-only edit)” almost certainly means that this is the b-side of Warner Bros. promotional single 7-29746, and not that unreleased edit.

P.S. — I highly recommend Tudahl’s book to all Prince aficionados as the definitive resource on the history of the Purple Rain period. Hopefully just the first volume of many more to come on prior and subsequent eras. It’s great to see the Estate ackowledging the importance of his research by including a contribution from him in this 1999 release.

          • Eric M. says:

Thank you for the extra context, and for the book recommendation. The version I have heard is definitely an edit of the LP Version— perhaps the 5:53 version was a true edit of the remix!

  75. fan says:

Awesome box set, there’s no question about it.

But I miss the days when concerts/exlusives were released as standalone releases without albums, why pay 200$ for only 4LP that will be played?

  76. Chris Squires says:

When you put this up against what is just being announced for The Stones Let It Bleed, this is a masterpiece.
Not a Prince fan, but this looks superbly done.

    • SeanL says:

Couldn’t agree more Chris Squires, the Stones legal issues really does them no favours when it comes to these reissues. Really poor 50th anniversary boxset for Let it Bleed…..

      • Chris Squires says:

Getting some poor schmo to write 007946 on a box doesn’t really cut it for me. But I will wait for Paul’s piece on that particular stinker. £125! ha!

  77. David Mcintyre says:

I am officially salivating. This looks far superior to thr PR set

  78. Francois says:

I like this. A lot, and the price for the CD set is right for the first release.
Loads of content for around 60€, I’m in. i loved the Purple Rain reissue but it lacked a proper book/booklet ot whatever for my taste.
    Thank you Warner

  79. Ryk says:

Weirdly, Amazon U.S. is showing a 15th Nov release date, but Amazon U.K. is showing 29th Nov (for digital).

This will likely be my last purchase before NZ charges GST on ALL imported goods (up until now there has been a threshold under which no GST was charged). After the 1st of Dec I will only be purchasing from sites that remove the VAT for international purchases (sorry Paul).

    • Graham Turner says:

Many sites were initially reporting 15th November but 29th November has since been confirmed by The Prince Estate.

  80. Andrew says:

Awesome! My second favourite album ever. Now got to decide which format to go for. The 5CD/DVD combo looked best.

  81. vikerii says:

Super deluxe all the way for me!!

I am a bit disappointed they left out EXTRALOVEABLE and LUST U ALWAYS. I hope those see an official release someday. People who haven’t heard those are missing some true gems.

    • Nate Jackson says:

Gems, I agree, but unfortunately, the “r” word ruins both songs’ chances of ever being released in this day and age.

  82. Tom m hans says:

    Yesss, finally. Take my money.

  83. Stephen says:

I’m all over this when the UK links come out but £200+ is a lot of money, especially when there’s the chance it’ll come down in price at a later date. Then again it might sell out then I’ll cry

  84. RJS says:

This is a welcome reissue. Purple Rain expanded edition aside, nothing released since his death has been of the slightest interest. I though all of his 00s and 90s albums were going to be reissued before they got to the 80-87 albums that really matter.

    • vikerii says:

P&M ’83 was a curiosity at best, but I thought Originals was excellent. More than just a completist’s acquisition, I truly enjoy listening to it.

  85. Ben says:

Superb price for the CD/DVD Set compared to the “Originals”-Set. This was/is way too overpriced imho. Looking so forward for this “1999” Re-Release. Hope the Prince Estate will do the same for the “BATMAN Motion Picture Soundtrack”, still one of my favourite Prince Albums.

  86. eljay says:

a fantastic prince album just got even better. the cd boxset will be mine. definitely one of my favourites.
you can only drool in anticipation of what to expect for sign of the times, his masterwork.

  87. stephen king says:

Wow! That’s what I call a superdeluxe reissue. Lots of unreleased tracks and all of the edits. Just as well there’s not a Bowie late 80s box set this year to spend my hard earned upon as that vinyl box looks dear based on the Amazon USA price, though the CD set’s not quite so bad.

  88. Steven Campbell says:

When are the links coming up for Amazon UK?

  89. Clifton Montgomery says:

I’m assuming you got to listen to the vault material when you interviewed Michael Howe? I think I’m in the wrong business!

  90. Ken says:

This may sound silly of me,but if you are going to put in a DVD why can’t they find any space just to put in the ordinary single promo videos or other very BASIC Prince promo visual stuff the record company owns? i.e they put in a live show but don’t seem to bother putting anything else onto the DVD,which seems a bit illogical to me.Surely there are at least 3 official single promo videos in the company vaults? Why aren’t they in the deluxe set etc..?

    • eljay says:

maybe they got future plans to issue a separate comprehensive promo video set on bluray.

    • RJS says:

You can stream the official music videos for 1999, Little Red Corvette, Let’s Pretend Were Married and Automatic on YouTube. Just watching them on my TV now and the quality isn’t any worse than what you’d expect on DVD.

      • CJ Feeney says:

Most 80’s promos look bad on modern TVs. Some artists (notably Kylie and Peter Gabriel) have gone to great efforts to clean up their promos for Blu Ray/DVD but the interviews suggest it was a lot of effort and expense.
I’ve read that Jean Michel Jarre has vetoed a release of his historic Concert in Houston as the TV footage is so poor.

    • LeighS says:

I’m with you on that point. It seems somehow incomplete to skip the album or era-specific promos. To me to visual element is just as important as the recordings, especially with an artist like Prince. Videos like “Automatic” and “Lets Pretend We’re Married” were extremely rare until the official YouTube channel launched and even then they only posted clips in 480p or lower. I personally own high quality copies of nearly all of his videos, but it’s taken years to acquire them with the absence of any comprehensive official release. Anyway I just think it’s a bit of a shame these little trinkets are so often skipped over on SDEs.

  91. ROUGH says:

Fantastic. This is the way I hoped the “Prince estate” would go – release BUNCHES of unreleased music. “Purple Rain” Deluxe was a good start, but somehow crappy – including no live show from that era on CD (only a non watchable – not remastered – bad DVD…) and a mastering mistake on “Erotic City”. VERY excited about this.

  92. gogandmagog says:

I wish I was a Prince fan…various recent good deluxe sets, vault material, edits, B-sides, excellent value for the money, no mixed CD and vinyl.

Are you listening Bowie estate, ,Muse, etc?

  93. Michael says:

Not my favourite Prince record but I will buy. Nice to have a good sounding Little Red Corvette. When he meet Denise Matthews he told her she should change her name to Vagina & all America would know who she was. She settled on Vanity.

Next rumoured is going to be the Parade deluxe.

  94. Koen says:

I was very excited until I read it will be a large format boxy thing. I’ll just stream it in that case.

  95. tec says:

A must buy SDE for sure. I’ll pick up the CD edition I think.

  96. Stan Butler says:

Now this is what I call a “premium” product, at a reasonable cost.
And no unnecessary hardback book to inflate the price.
    Other companies take note.

  97. Tony says:

That is a top drawer box set, in my list awaiting an SDE alert mid 2020.
