Prince 1999 vinyl sets will now come with download cards for digital audio

The Prince Estate have had a change of heart and will now supply all three vinyl variants of the forthcoming 1999 reissue with download cards.

Previously, the communication from the Estate, via the record label, was that these wouldn’t come with any kind of download at all, but that has changed and a card for downloadable digital audio is included, albeit these will be 320kbps MP3s.

Clearly the download will reflect the audio on the specific package you buy, so those that purchase the 10LP set will get all 65 audio tracks including the two discs of ‘vault’ studio recordings, while 4LP purchasers get a 29-track download which includes remastered album and all the seven-inch edits. Note that the video on the DVD in the super deluxe sets won’t be available to download.

1999 4LP vinyl set

1999 will be reissued on 29 November 2019. As well as the 10LP+DVD, 4LP and 2LP vinyl sets the reissue will also be available as a 5CD+DVD super deluxe and as deluxe 2CD and single CD packages.

  1. Alan Mitchell says:

It’s not very often you see a penis on a record sleeve nowadays. Well apart from Kanye.

  2. Paul says:

Could someone please tell why amazon us is not taking pre orders as yet,but they were a couple weeks ago please help

  3. RikTheHib says:

I guess the MP3 download is to discourage piracy. If it was 24bit/96khz (or better) FLAC then watch the interwebs explode….

  4. Henry Watson says:

Anyone any thoughts on the likely impact of no-deal Brexit on ultimate final price if we buy from Amazon Italy or France? Presumably, the package would be subject to import duty?

  5. GentleRabbit says:

What welcome news, MP3 or otherwise! Good on them. I wonder what the order of the next few SDE’s might be? Perhaps SOTT, then Parade, then Dirty Mind, then ATWIAD, then Lovesexy, then Controversy (and that’s only the 80s ones)? I wonder. Keep them coming, if we don’t have Prince, at least we have The Vault…

  6. wayne A KLEIN says:

As long as these aren’t brickwalled like Purple Rain, I will be happy. I suspect, though, that they will be.

    • Alan Mitchell says:

So buy the LP if you can. Actually even that (PR vinyl) was poor compared to the Rhino reissue, but that’s because Prince and Josh did it. So fingers crossed this will be like the recent reissues and sound ok.

I’ve yet to put in my preorder through Norman. I’m sure there’s no rush. Limited edition without a number is a joke. Limited to what, 100,000 copies?

  7. Larry Davis says:

The US preorder price of the 1999 5CD/DVD box is great, so I put it in on Amazon…I too agree the Estate is on a roll with these reissues/boxes, looking forward to what’s next…as for the Purple Rain set, I have no problem with it, leave it alone…if they find more or want to add to it, make a Part 2, instead of making people buy it over again…as for The Gold Experience, if TMBGITW is causing all this drama and red tape, cut the cord, put it out without the song and work with those people to put the song out separately on an EP or single, the Beautiful Experience…remember that one?? Versace I would not pay more than 10 bucks on, the excerpts and edits…

  8. Michael says:

Great news for those who appreciate mp3 downloads. I find mp3’s inferior in sound quality compared to wav or other digital downloads. Although I’ve accumulated a few mp3 download cards that accompanied some of my other vinyl LPs, I’ve never used them, but instead bought a CD edition of the same album if I wanted to play in my car.

  9. beej says:

    320kbps mp3…… lol

  10. jason says:

Is it a sad commentary on current popular music that I’m way more excited about this than most of the stuff coming out now? Wish they’d get on reissuing Gold Experience but this is still incredible. Now they need to fix the Purple Rain deluxe that came out a couple years ago by giving more of the material and making nice vinyl editions like the one here.

    • Alan Mitchell says:

When you say “current popular music” what exactly are you referring to? The kind of stuff that gets played on Free Radio or Heat FM or the more cutting edge popular music that appears on Radio 1? Is it just pop music or are you including genres like grime and so on that are so influential now?

      Al

  11. Ryk says:

The Canadian Amazon price for the 5CD+ is great right now. It’s a pity about their inflated international shipping costs.

  12. vikerii says:

That’s excellent news for the vinyl collectors. The Prince Estate I think is growing nicely into their role of managing Prince’s music. I really hope they give all his albums (especially the WB era) the deluxe treatment. I will buy them all.

Then I hope there are vault collections that gather songs that don’t make it onto the deluxe versions.

  13. Kauwgompie says:

The Prince estate knows how to do reissues. Plain and simple. Common sense prevails!

  14. Tony says:

I’m a big fan of the download cards, they make great presents. This is the first box set I’ve pre ordered in a while without waiting for a SDE discount, can’t see this being discounted too much. Can’t make my mind up about the Supergrass box yet.

    • Wayne C says:

I’d also like that Supergrass box set but the vinyl picture discs are
Putting me off , normal vinyl or coloured for me.

  15. ant says:

Will there be independent Hires digital downloads available at Hdtracks or qobuz (or even the new Amazon Hires site-or is that only streaming? )

mp3 to go along with vinyl is a bit ??? These days,

    Bring on SOTT and Lovesexy
