Prince’s 1999 CD box available in Japan

Last chance to grab the CD box without remortgaging your house

Any Prince fans who missed out on last year’s 5CD+DVD super deluxe version of 1999 can still secure a copy if they are willing to order online from Japan.

The box contains the remastered album, a CD of promo mixes and B-sides (remastered), two discs of unreleased vault tracks, a Live in Detroit CD and then a DVD of a live performance in Houston. It comes with a 52-page booklet and excellent Japanese-style box-and-drawer style packaging.

This CD box didn’t go out of print quite as fast as the blink-and-you-miss-it 10LP vinyl package, but nevertheless it’s now extremely hard to find at anything approaching a reasonable price, which is why Amazon Japan is a good last chance option. It’s listed there at 7,531 JPY which is about £55 (or US $69 )- i.e. ‘face value’ – the price it was when released in November last year.

You do of course have to factor in any import duty to wherever you may be in the world, but Amazon Japan have an useful ‘import fees deposit’ system (which guarantees no extra charges) so for example if you are in the UK the ‘all in’ price with shipping and pre-paid fees would be about £75.

The big proviso here is that we don’t know how much stock they have and this price and availability could disappear relatively quickly. You have been warned!

  1. Stephen says:

Fopp near Leicester Square had 2 cd super deluxe box sets for £75 today!

  2. Matt says:

Anybody know if the printing error on the Vault Tracks 1 sleeve has been fixed? On just about every copy there’s red text that reads “VAULT TRACKS I” over the tape label. Looks like the designer left on a later by mistake before sending it to press. I noticed the copy Paul has in the unboxing is correct, but most seem to have this error.

  3. Dave Thornhill says:

$AU111 on Amazon AU right now – just jumped on it, only a couple of copies left in stock.

  4. Sheldon Cole says:

The price on Amazon Japan has now gone up about 40% to 10,989 yen which is about £81 – so including postage and VAT the total cost to the UK would now be over £100. When I bought it last week the price before shipping and VAT was 7,632 yen (about £56). Supply and demand!

  5. Ramzoo says:

Despite a japanese booklet inside & the OBI, I can confirm that discs and packaging are manufactured in Eastern Europe ! So you’ll pay an extra price compared to Europe thinking. it’s from Japan.
Great box Set, I’m really happy.
Slight disappointment: music videos, Lust U Always, Extraloveable & D.M.S.R. (alternate tale) should have been added.

    • Christian says:

Received the shipment today from Amazon.jp.
NO japanese booklet inside / NO Obi-Strip
It’s the standard Version i already received from Amaon.it for a much higher price now
      very disappointing….

  6. Kauwgompie says:

The Purple Rain box is now also out of print. I bagged an extra one from Amazon Germany a few weeks ago for less than $20 so watch out for a deal here or there, they are still out there but increasingly rare. It seems these Prince boxes are limited so don’t wait too long to get the new Up All Nite.

  7. Jeff D says:

Amazing that this is OOP for the most part…..I was fortunate enough to order one from Barnes and Nobles in the US about a month ago for $60!!!! I was actually surprised that they had one available!!!!

  8. Paul H says:

Paul….. does the Japan Amazon site recognise your UK login or do you have to set up a new account on third site?

  9. GentleRabbit says:

A huge thank you as always, Paul – and thank also to all the posters regarding non-Japan options for this (frustratingly limited, yet) wonderful set.

Just a quick question for my fellow Australian readers – I have placed an order with JB HiFi to have it delivered (around AUD$135) but I am a little nervous re it being damaged in the post.

Does anybody have experience with JB’s packaging, and if so then do they pack their items safely so as to avoid damage? I just want to make sure, as this is a precious one and I would like to be confident that I’ve made the right choice and shouldn’t perhaps cancel and reorder from somewhere else? Hopefully they’ll be I’ve heard tell of JB’s sometimes patchy customer service and I feel a tad nervous. Thank you, SDE village!

    • Fady says:

@GentleRabbit, I’ve never had any delivery issues with JB. They are very reliable and items have arrived unscatched. I think their pricing is a little on the high side, but that’s another story…

  10. Richard K says:

It was actually down to 5000 yen a few months back (35 quid) . Living in Japan grabbing it was a no brainer.

  11. MK says:

    Great, thanks

  12. Karl says:

Jpg does not not allow an address outside Japan??

    • Paul Sinclair says:

It does. There’s a link that you click which says ‘ship to an address outside Japan.

  13. Ian Smith says:

There’s something wrong with this going OOP, it’s just too good to be off the shelves (although I suppose the download is always available for the heretics out there). Hope they do an eventual repress for all those future Prince fans. This set should always be available.

Looking forward to Sign o”the Times, that was always my favourite Prince album, and the vault stuff should be amazing. I’m possibly most excited by the DVD, if it’s a full concert rather than the film we are familiar with.

  14. Wayne C says:

Has anyone bought the Rainbow Children vinyl re issue?, what’s with the adhesive label on the rear cover?, mine has lots of air bubbles pockets underneath of it which won’t push out as the thing is stuck directly to the flimsy cellophane!. Ordered another copy from Amazon and it’s the same as the first one.

    • Francois says:

Well it is the exact same packaging as the original LP release and CD release. The Track listing is on a sticker, which is itself stuck to the shrink wrap. I guess this is primarily not to spoil the incredible painting which the cover is.
I cut the shrink wrap around the sticker and put it with LP1 in the gatefold. No risk to damage the cover while attempting to stick it to the cover, which in any case was obviously not what Prince wanted in the first place.

  15. Mark Filby says:

I wish that I’d known that the box sets were limited release, I would have pre-ordered them

    • Klaus says:

There was no need for that, at least not for the cd-version which i bought only after watching Paul’s fabulous unboxing video and still got it for about 55 EUR.

  16. eric slangen says:

Ordered, total 85 euro (no customs YET???)

  17. Eric M. says:

Thanks, Paul— I didn’t realize it was going out of print. Paid $80 incl. shipping to US. Not bad, esp. given that the digital version is around $75 for hi-res Qobuz.

    • Paige says:

Did you have to create a new account for the Japanese site? What do I need to do to ship it to the US? I feel I’m missing something. Thanks.

      • Eric M. says:

        Paige if you’re reading:

Yes, create a new account— and setting up your shipping address is tricky. Be sure to click the link that says “set up a shipping address outside of Japan”. It took me a minute to get that. Hope this helps: as of right now, it’s still showing “In stock”.

  18. James says:

Still in stock at Amazon Australia (AU$150) for those looking and unable to order from Japan.

  19. RODOLFO MARTIN says:

Does it come with the regular high-quality mini-LP that is the norm in Japan? That would be a huge plus. Resellers are rubbing their hands for sure.

    • Paul Sinclair says:

Not quite. Watch the unboxing video and you’ll see.

      • RODOLFO MARTIN says:

I didn’t watch the video. I thought it was an old one. I will watch it now. Thanks

        • Paul Sinclair says:

Well it is old, but it shows you the detail of the box!

          • Klaus says:

As i’m not the biggest fan of the “1999”-era of Prince i needed the video to convince me of buying the cd-set and even make me a bit sad that i don’t buy vinyl-only anymore (my wallet thanks me for that though ;-) )

  20. Mike M says:

Surprised to see the 10 LP boxset also showing as available, thought they had long gone..

  21. MüllerMüller says:

Any news about the Sign O The Times super deluxe 8cd+dvd set ??
    Rumor….?

    • Paul Sinclair says:

SDE will be the first to bring you news of whatever is happening next!

    • Alan Blevin says:

Announcement late June.Rumour is maybe 8 cds plus DVD.

      • David Mcintyre says:

That’s the current rumour on Prince. Org. End if June announcement for a possible Sept release date. Sign. 9 disc set. So much possible content if it is. The 1999sde was pretty well done. Can’t wait for the next. Sign would also tie in with Duane Tudahls second Prince session book which is 1985-87 I believe which is due out nxt Feb

        • wahmbeck says:

A “Sign o the Times” Box? I can not wait any longer.

I still hope for a MADHOUSE re-release with all the trimmings ;-)

      • EW99 says:

Yes, well…. The rumours for the Roxy box were equally exciting and look what happened there.

      • AdamW says:

Honestly, knowing what we know about that era, 8 CDs seems a bit scant. Hope it’s decently comprehensive.

        • Jason M says:

8 CDs for Sign is bare bones, but it is better than nothing. Hopefully Nick “Add some reverb and echo to that please” is not involved, Example: his Frankenstein mix adding Jill Jones vocals from 1986 to Prince’s 1982 “Baby You’re A Trip” was an awful decision. Just leave the tracks mixed as they are. Prince’s original background vocals were sublime. 1999 outtakes were also screwed with by him, and his comment was “I just did what I thought Prince would do.”

          • GentleRabbit says:

I didn’t know that had happened. I, too, am very concerned about the possibility of those fortunate enough to work on the Prince reissues messing with his original vision (a la MJ etc).

The truth is that we’re not really sure which parts of this Vault Prince would have ended up agreeing to release – but we’re lucky enough to get them, so the least they can do is stay true to the artist’s own creative decisions and not make them on his behalf.

Nobody else knows what “Prince would do”, thank you very much. It’s f*cking sacrilegious.

  22. bruce kelso says:

japan post is NOT shipping to at least 50 countries due to the virus situation. only dhl shipping is available and its not cheap, so I would check first with seller to see if they will ship to where you are located before ordering.
