This image confirms that the four-CD ‘deluxe’ edition of Paul McCartney‘s forthcoming Pure McCartney compilation will be delivered in ‘bookset’ packaging…
The 67-track collection echoes the presentation of the New 2CD+DVD Collector’s Edition (2014) and the 2CD+2DVD version of Good Evening New York City (2009 ) with the discs held in stiff card ‘leaves’ along with, presumably, some text and photos in pages at the front of the book.
The still incredibly expensive 4LP vinyl version (although, note it’s £25 cheaper on Amazon Italy) is pictured above, and there is no confirmation at the time of writing how the two-CD edition will be packaged, although there’s a pretty good chance it will be similar to how the two-disc ‘archive collection’ releases are presented (i.e. not a jewel case).
Pure McCartney will be released on 10 June 2016. You can read much more about the release here.

I’m definitely not buying any of the versions of this Pure McCartney set because of the lousy cheap packaging that WILL SCRATCH and SCUFF the playing surface of each CD that’s jammed into those cardboard slots which Concord insists on using for all of the McCartney Reissues that they’ve released without protective inner sleeves to prevent this from the manufacturer inserting the discs to the consumer pulling them out for the first time.
Great great great
Send it to mister mccartney
I’d buy this one NOW
Ummm, how about the real word I was looking for…saying it could be an “intermediatory” type of release! That would be executable! I feel many if not most re-releases are created with that type of intention.
I can only tell so much from the packaging but maybe this is for the lawyers and the idea of going the minimalist route since most people don’t buy this stuff anyway. Maybe it is a “meaniatory” release if that can be accepted as a fake word. Some sort of compilation for “in the meantime” using minimal product that is new.
As others have mentioned I agree that this appears to be a missed opportunity as this is neither a near definitive post The Beatles career spanning 4CD Best of (Rod Stewart – Storyteller; Elton John – To Be Continued; Slade – Anthology; Roxy Music – The Thrill Of It All; etc) neither is it a curated dip through the back catalogue with circa a dozen rarities/new tracks to get the existing fanbase to buy it (David Bowie – Sound & Vision; The Who – 30 Years of Maximum R&B; Fleetwood Mac – The Chain; etc).
And now we find out on top of the spare room on the CDs for extra tracks, the packaging is not going to be released in a durable jewel case.
It so frustrating that even with no unreleased rarities (i.e. Waterspout) this could have been a great career spanning compilation containing at least one original composition from each of his solo/Wings albums (so avoiding having too many tracks from the admittedly great Flaming Pie) and leaving others as if they never existed. Plus with a handful of non album tracks rounded up it could have looked (chronologically) similar to this:

This the kind of compilation I would have purchased.
Richard, thats more like it, infact the only change I would make to your list would be to swap Only Mama Knows for House of Wax.
You should have been given the job to compile the tracks, 10/10 I would have brought.
Love it! Great Track Selection. Is it possible to buy 4-CD jewel cases over the internet, or are they limited to 2?
I think some of the old FatBox cases can hold 4 discs. I know that the ‘nuclear burn’ Brand X anthology came out in one of these a few years ago. If you do a search on ebay for ‘4 Way CD Jewel Case’ there’s loads on sale!
Good track listing Richard Allen. I’d have somehow tried to squeeze in (make it 5-CD?):
Too Many People
Big Barn Bed
Tragedy
Give Ireland Back To The Irish
Mary Had A Little Lamb
Soily (studio)
No Values
Not Such A Bad Boy
P.S. Love Me Do
Looking For Changes
Either way – far better than what’s gonna be released.
Oh – and “fat box” jewel cases that hold anywhere from 2-6 discs can definitely be purchased. ;-)
Any half-baked, half-interested inkling of a thought I had about buying this is now erased due to the packaging. If companies insist on shoving CDs into paper slots they need to put those discs in card sleeves first. Without them, such packaging is a recipe for damaged discs. Try harder, companies.
agree. I was thinking of buying this (even though singles I like are missing) … but not in packaging like this. while it looks pretty, it’s too much of a faff taking cds out etc. and they always end up
getting scratched to death. while I know it’s not really in at the moment (esp for 2 cd deluxe editions: cherry red aside) I just always prefer a jewel case.
Probably will skip, looks too late to add missing tracks.
Would have bought despite owning all content before because it’d be a good consistent listen with sounds levels match but will probably build my own playlist and wait for the Flowers box
Adam-My Love original single was Paul McCartney & Wings, the album Red Rose Speedway with Big Barn Bed was released under Wings.
… but then it underperformed, hence for Band on the Run they went back to Paul McCartney & Wings!
Ben – Red Rose Speedway was credited to Paul McCartney & Wings due to the under performance of Wings Wild life.
Track listing says Big Barn Bed , Paul McCartney and Wings where My Love is just Wings , both are from the Red Rose Speedway album which came out under Wings ?
You’re right Jon, if nothing else just glancing at the tracklisting does make you realise how the McCartney back catalogue remains surprisingly under-rated outside of Band On The Run and a handful of singles. Hopefully some future deluxe editions of the more obscure albums will continue to rectify this. Speaking of which, does anyone know of any bargains out there currently for the deluxe Macca Archive box sets?
Jon C, I have an order for the four CD version in place, my reservations (elsewhere) were about the mixing of eras but it sounds like it works so thanks to you the order will be staying in place:). I still think it will be ages before we see SDE remasters of the albums not already done anyway and Pure says to me that sales of the existing ones weren’t that great.
Just for the hell of it, I created a version of this album with the mp3s I have already (missing out on the 2016 remasters and using the originals of course, but I think I can live with that), just to see what both the 2CD and the 4CD version would sound like as a mix.
As a whole, it flows really nicely from one song to the next; you’re not dwelling on too many of his mellower songs in one go, and you’re constantly switching eras as well. If anything, it proves he’s always been a consistent and strong songwriter. [Yes, I know, some people won’t forgive him for “Wonderful Christmastime” or in this case, “Bip Bop”, but I think you can look past his sillier moments as just lighthearted fun.] I especially like that he chose “Junk” as a final track, sort of as a denouement after the epic finale of “Hope for the Future”. Very “Revolution 9″/”Good Night” in that respect.
Will I buy the album? Not entirely sure on that just yet. As I mentioned, I pretty much have it all already. If the 2016 remaster tracks become available as single downloads, I might grab those, but otherwise I might wait for a sale or something.
Sorry Paul McCartney but I will not be putting any money in your large bank account. Would rather it had been a collection of hits and well known tracks and even better than the 2CD ‘Wingspan’ compilation, but NO. Also, not keen on the packaging either (yet another design that will leave the CDs fingermarked and scratched).
Probably the first McCartney release I won’t buy. He needed a career retrospective but not now. This should have been a pre Christmas release and comprehensive. There’s no rhyme or reason for the selection and to miss whole albums out is just odd. There’s some crazy sequencing of tracks as well. Very jarring.
I’m still incredibly not psyched.
