The once elusive vinyl picture of Prince‘s Purple Rain is finally available to pre-order for those in the UK.
The 12-inch picture disc of the album is reasonably priced right now and will be released in June, at the same time as the black vinyl, two-CD deluxe and 3CD+DVD expanded edition of Purple Rain.
There has been some uncertainty around whether this edition uses the ‘2015 Paisley Park remaster’. It’s hard to see why it wouldn’t but SDE has made enquiries with Warners and will report back. It might be academic, since picture discs never sound that great, anyway!
This is released on 23 June 2017.

the shaped disc is the single, not the album
as for which master, how many people are buying this to play? i never play picture discs unless they have some music not available elsewhere and then i rip a copy once to play digitally. you are better off with the cd or even a new press black vinly
Exactly. That’s why I said it might be ‘academic’ since picture discs aren’t really designed for great audio!
It would be nice to know how limited the picture disc is – I’m thinking only 100,000 copies worldwide…
WHY is Purple Rain on PledgeMusic at all? Is that even a legit campaign, or is someone scamming people? It’s not like this isn’t available through every music retailer around the world…
I will probably stick with my shaped picture disc that ive had from release and has not discolored or broke. £1.99 when purchased ;-)
fair price but poss will be reduced by a few quid before release but pre ordered anyway because its prince and you cant own too many versions of this great album. its a shame the new reissue isn’t on purple vinyl the last reissue 2012 I think sounds excellent compared to the original cd release
Is that really the scale image of the picture disc? poor Apollonia has her head cut off.
I have to also say I have owned one picture disc LP and this was when I was young and didn’t know much about audio quality and I thought the sound was the worst thing I heard ever. I will never understand collecting vinyl picture discs.
NO – over £20 is NOT reasonably priced at all – £15 is the maximum I’d be prepared to pay, so I’ll wait
After all being a pic disc, it’s hardly going to be of top audio quality – so it’s just meant to be looked at
A damn great album though
In relative terms it’s reasonably priced, unless you want to pay £30? > https://thevinylstore.tmstor.es/cart/product.php?id=32615
People expect to pay a premium for picture discs, I think. Hardly any black vinyl is £15 or under (from new), so I’d suggest your ‘maximum’ is optimistic for a brand new reissue.
IT’S NOT the 2015 remaster. It’s indicated on the web store, the PledgeMusic campaign and in the emails they sent.
I can see it on PledgeMusic but where does it have this confirmation on the the Warners web store > http://store.officialprincemusic.com/music-1/vinyl/purple-rain-picturedisc.html
https://thevinylstore.tmstor.es/cart/product.php?id=32615
This seems to suggest that it’s the previous master, not the 2015 one.
