Queen / Studio Collection back in print

18LP coloured vinyl career box

Queen‘s mammoth Studio Collection coloured vinyl box set is being made available once more.

First issued back in 2015, the evergreen collection has been reproduced – and then sold out again – a number of times. It features all 15 studio albums, half-speed mastered and pressed on 180g coloured vinyl and comes with an 108-page hardback book.

It’s an incredibly sturdy and luxurious set, as my unboxing video from five years ago demonstrates…

Sadly, the vinyl box isn’t getting any cheaper. Every time it’s re-manufactured – in slightly smaller quantities –  the unit cost price goes up, but at least buying one of the new batch is still less painful than scouring the resale market for previous editions.

Studio Collection is being reissued on 17 July 2020. These are available via the SDE shop using this link or the button below (UK shipping only I’m afraid – which is free).

  1. Lucien LE GALLO says:

Huge stroke of luck, I found one today in a Fnac store in Cannes in France with an additional change that put the price at 350 € (399.99 displayed). If you are in France, take advantage of certain stores still have some (Nice and Monaco for example)

  2. Kevin Yoder says:

This is the third or fourth time they’ve re-issued this set. I think that’s great that they’ve done so to meet demand. Now maybe they could get The Beatles to do at least a small second run of their Mono Vinyl set.

  3. Justin P says:

Hi! Does anyone know the difference between the Virgin EMI and Hollywood Records pressings? I can’t find any consistent answers. Thanks!

  4. Luc says:

I have the first release box set. They have done a great job but my personal disappointment was the fact that Queen II, my favourite album, was the only bad pressing of the lot. Some strange background noise on the whole of side 1. Unfortunately I could not get this particular album exchanged but I got a discount so I took that over swapping the entire box set, where I had to pay the return postage myself. Because all the other albums were fine I didn’t want to take the risk that a new set might have a bad pressing as well. Other bummer is that Queen II is the only album in the boxset with a different make up (2 seperate discs) than the one you can buy seperately, which is only one album.

  5. Tim Abbott says:

Nice to see such an excellent set getting a new lease of life – I also bought this after first seeing it on SDE years ago. Back then, I laughed at first at the audacity of Queen ripping off their fans (like me, a fan since I was a mere child) with such an expensive set, but soon buckled and sold my Complete Works set to part-fund this one, and have regretted nothing since.

What I’d really like however, is some sort of companion box set of live albums, 12″ remixes and an updated B-sides compilation like Complete Vision. I’m genuinely surprised they haven’t managed that yet, as the market for some of those live LPs (Queen Rock Montreal being my personal vinyl white whale) are pretty scarce.

I won’t buy it if it includes The Cosmos Rocks though. Even I have my dignity.

    • Jarmo Keranen says:

The Cosmos Rocks might be a lousy record, but it’s name always reminds me of two classic albums. Creedence Clerwater Revival’s Cosmo’s Factory and Aerosmith’s Rocks!

  6. Tony says:

I guess Queen can’t ever keep everyone happy, if they had released the additional editions in clear vinyl or with an extra disc of rarities , every one who bought the first editions will be saying they have to buy the new set to complete their collection, with the accompanying moaning. The Freddie film must have brought yet another younger generation into the Queen fan club, and it’s right they should have the opportunity to buy this box without the daft eBay prices. I was chuffed to bits with the Italy heads up for the Prince box, thanks Paul. I ended up with 2 Five Years vinyl boxes as they were released on my birthday , I swapped one with a pal in exchange for a week’s hire of his camper van, I don’t get the hoarding to sell on later, where on earth do people store them?

  7. Richard Swan says:

I paid £125 for a brand new reissue Set in 2018 direct from the Queen website….. it had been priced incorrectly and I pounced……. my purchase immediately notified the shop staff of the error and it was taken offline for a few minutes whilst they corrected the error and put the price up to £299 (I think….., maybe even a bit more…..). The staff were jolly decent and honoured my purchase price . What a bargain……

  8. GentleRabbit says:

As a lucky owner of one of the boxes from the initial run (thanks to a Deal Alert courtesy of our own Sir Paul!), I am personally glad that more fans will have the opportunity to have this gorgeous and colourful set. Life’s too short to worry about such things – everyone who wants one/is able to get one should have that opportunity, despite the (in retrospect) misleading nature of the first announcement. Get one if you can, its very special.

PS Paul… is there any substance to the suddenly-circulating rumour of a September 4th preorder date for the Seeds Of Love SDE popped up, then disappeared from Amazon UK?

Could it be?! Understand if you’re sworn to secrecy but if you ask me, it certainly bodes well. Apparently multiple formats were mentioned, also. Amazing to know that the white whale TSOL box may at long last be imminent. If it is true, what will all of us have to complain about here one SDE now?!

    • Paul Sinclair says:

Roland did say that the Seeds reissue was coming later this year, however he also said there would be a digital single, The Tipping Point, in April and *that* never happened! All I will say is that the reissue of Seeds has now taken longer than the original album!

      • Trash says:

I ordered the vinyl reissue of TSOL which is due on Sept 4th. Here’s hoping the SDE is due at the same time…

  9. Laurent says:

Did anyone ever noticed that the FLASH GORDON sleeve on all re-issues is not very well printed, it looks like a bad copy of the original, the letters are a bit blurry. It is obvious when you compare it to the original… Also, the original Japanese edition had the lettering embossed.

    • Steve says:

The Flash Gordon sleeve in my set is perfect, pin sharp. It would have been nice to be embossed, but it looks OK to me

  10. Mark A says:

QUEEN vinyl box: Currently $367.90 U.S. on Amazon as of July 3rd, 2020. Free shipping w/ Prime, of course. Add CA. tax about $400 even. Currently in stock!

    • Justin P says:

Hi Mark! The Amazon listing says it’s a Hollywood Records pressing. Do you know if there’s a difference between the two version? I understand that the Hollywood Records reissues from about a decade back were pretty poor in terms of quality.

      • Kevin Yoder says:

I know that the first pressing of the European box set had a code to get MP3 files of the albums as well, while the Hollywood Records version doesn’t. I don’t know that this repress has the codes. But I don’t see it mentioned anywhere on Queen’s press release or the page for the item on their official store.

  11. MichaelM says:

I have first editions of Queen’s albums, from Queen to The Game, and The Works. I also have Greatest Hits 1 and 2, and Made In Heaven. Everything else isn’t worth having imho, not even for “completion” reasons.

    • Paul Sinclair says:

Your logic is flawed here. ‘Completion’ reasons basically means you want something ONLY (or largely) to complete a set, and not because you desire the item itself. So by definition you are already accepting you don’t ‘need’ it. Therefore it doesn’t make sense to say you don’t need it even for ‘completion’ reasons, because you if you do need an item to complete your collection, it is a FACT that you need it… :)

  12. Melvin says:

This is an amazing boxed set. I bought the 2019 version (I don’t think there is any difference between versions actually, despite the price going up) and loved it. I am only a casual Queen fan but absolutely love this set. Superb quality, beautiful records, fantastic book. Even more enjoyable after a visit to the Mountain Studios/Queen Experience at the Montreux Casino.

  13. Stefan says:

Hello, I’ve got one of the original batch from 2015. Most of my set is brilliant – the packaging is great, the sleeves look top-notch, the vinyl is dead flat, and nary a speck of dust on them (how did they get them so clean?). No download code, sadly, but perhaps that’s because I’m in Canada (overseas rights management, etc.). But – one or two records seem to be noisier than one would expect from a bespoke, remastered set. A Kind of Magic in particular sounds no better than the cassette version that I wore the oxides off of in my Walkman back in the day. Does anyone know if there’s someone that I could write to, now that the set is temporarily “back in print”, to get replacements for one or two records?

  14. Shaun says:

I picked up a sealed 2015 copy on EBay a few weeks ago for £370 which I think is a bargain. This really is a beautifully packaged box set. I also got Five Years on Vinyl for £480 (NM condition) including a sealed Pinups radio show 10″ which shows if you are patient there are bargains to be had. I would like to see the Tom Moulton Philadelphia International Classics 8LP box set reissued as that goes for silly money. I paid £50 for the CD box set and consider that a bargain. Finally Kevin Rowland’s All This Useless Beauty is being issued on Vinyl (pink) next month along with a CD reissue both with a bonus track next month.

    • Michael McA says:

Re Kevin Rowland – it’s called ‘My Beauty’ actually. I have ordered it – his singing on it is astonishing – but he didn’t half shoot himself in the foot with the cover shot. Appallingly bad!

  15. Matthew says:

We really love a re-press of Five Years too. Not even paying over £300 for that one let alone the £500+ it goes for on the secondary market.

  16. Rob says:

A few years ago there were mutterings of a DeAgostini Queen on vinyl partwork series like the one they did for The Beatles. In fact I recall it did actually get released in Italy. Wonder if that is still in the cards for the UK, The Beatles one was excellent.

  17. Nuno Bento says:

I have a first pressing and we’ve been in a passionate long term relationship since then.

  18. I personally think that reprints are fantastic for those that missed out the first (or, in this case, second) time round. I, I’m sure along with many others, was delighted to be able to pick up the TFF reissues without paying premium prices. I was lucky enough to pick up the Beatles mono set the first time but, had I not, I would be crossing my fingers that it would be reprinted. I have my fingers firmly crossed for a repressing of the Thin Lizzy BBC Box that currently goes for silly money, and I would have thought that all of us (as collectors) must have an equivalent that we would love to see a reprint of.

  19. Rob says:

Looks like a great set, and I’d certainly be interested if the price tag ever dropped to the £250 mark again, as I’m more of a casual fan so it’s less essential.

Afraid the Sign O The Times and ABBA sets are enough money for me to commit on SDEs for one month (!) and a bit more essential for me.

  20. Paul says:

Just watching the unboxing video, great video, did jazz not come with the ladies on the bikes poster?

    • Francois says:

Yes it comes with the poster.. At least in my 2nd batch boxset.

      • Paul Sinclair says:

Bloody hell, I don’t have one! And that’s a good photo :) Actually, I better check in case I’ve put it back in the wrong record…

        • Andrew M says:

First batch came with it too. It’s folded up the other side of the gatefold from the LP.

        • Francois says:

It is on the other side of the lyrics, you have the lyrics printed in whiteon a three fold bright pink poster, the commercial for bicycle riding is on the other side..

          • KevinK says:

Isn’t that what Paul refers to a “the second inner sleeve” for Jazz on the unboxing video?

          • Paul Sinclair says:

Sorry I do have it. Yes, I thought it was an inner sleeve but it’s a six-panel poster/lyric sheet. Phew!

  21. Stan Butler says:

This video reminded me of the SDE retro unboxing videos back in April.
Really enjoyed those videos. Would love to see some more.

    • Paul Sinclair says:

My unboxing space in the SDE office has had my 17 year old daughter in it doing ‘home schooling’ (or pretending to) which may explain fewer than normal unboxing videos of late!! But normal service should resume soon. Any requests, let me know!

      • ARidd says:

        Hi Paul.
Neil Young Archives 1 unboxing would be VERY interesting especially the blu ray edition!
Hopefully you could fit it in before Archives 2 hits the shelves!

        • AndyB says:

Judging by the length of time it took for Archives 1 and the long wait for Archives 2, I think Paul has plenty of time to make that happen!

      • Stan Butler says:

        That’s great.
SDE is an essential (multi) visit every day. Always checking in to see what’s new.
Your videos really helped raise the spirits during those grim early lockdown days.

      • David Roest says:

The Guns N’ Roses box :-)

  22. Elizabeth Hirst says:

I managed to get this set in 2015 – if you love Queen and you can afford it, then I highly recommend it. It’s really well packaged and the vinyl is top notch. No compromise has been made on the quality to fit coloured vinyl.

  23. David Anderson says:

I’m not even a huge Queen fan but this is the most beautiful set in my large collection. Absolutely stunning! I’m sure I only paid £229 from Amazon Italy? And yes, it did come with a download card Paul.

  24. Rupi says:

I got this for my birthday in June 2019 for £270 (from uDiscover). At the time I was having palpitations over the price, but now I’m thinking it was bargain of the century!!

    • Roland says:

That price sure was! I got my box from a small store in Holland for £400 in May 2019. Second batch, just as yours.

At least the two first rounds were done by the good people of optimal media in Germany – the third will most likely be too?

  25. Colin Naylor says:

Hi Paul, thanks for the info.
Is there any change whatsoever from this release to the last release ?
    Great work by the way.
    Cheers

    • Paul Sinclair says:

None. Although this doesn’t come with a download card, and I think it did originally back in 2015.

  26. Chris Squires says:

Ah, the happy days of picking this up on an SDE Deal Alert at £239.

I imagine the current high prices on some amazon stores is purely because they haven’t got the new reprint listed yet and it will be secondary sellers or old stock from the last reprint if it is still amazon sold. Once the new algorithms kick in that will come down.

It’s a lovely set and should be in every music / vinyl fan’s collection, but it certainly won’t be your cheapest purchase. A shame they had to go for the drip, drip, drip rather than having confidence that it would sell in decent quantities from the off. It is probably that uncertainly that has kept residual prices higher than they ought to be with this many copies floating about.

  27. Andrew M says:

Sick of seeing this being reprinted time after time.

    • Paul Sinclair says:

People complain when things aren’t reprinted (Tears For Fears, Lloyd Cole) and then they complain when they ARE reprinted.

      • Leonardo Lotti Marques says:

I wish they would reprint “The Beatles In Mono” (2014)

        • Chris Squires says:

Bowie Five Years would be another obvious reprint.
The Lord of the Rings Fellowship 6LP Box Set, another.

£229 and £106 respectively at launch. Good luck getting either under £400.

          • chris says:

I want that as well I have the aliens box set would get the others but knowing I cant get the first one puts me off

          • Joe Donato says:

I agree, the Five Years Bowie set needs to be reprinted. I am seeing $700 for the CD version on ebay, etc. And unfortunately, I missed out on it the first time.

      • Klaus says:

…and then there are those who moan when re-printed stuff sells out before date of release (The Hurting, anyone?) ;-)

      • Andrew M says:

But did they specifically say with “the hurting” that it was a strictly limited edition and there would be no reprints?

If they did then they should have stuck with that – as Queen did.

        • Paul Sinclair says:

No. It’s very rare that anyone ever says that.

          • Andrew M says:

But they did. That’s the point I’m making.

          • Paul Sinclair says:

I see what you are saying. Yep, agree they should really stick to what they said, however, unless you have 50 of these piled up in your basement waiting to make a killing in years to come, does it really make much difference? I have one and I’m not going to enjoy it any less just because a few more people can now get hold of it.

      • Leemer says:

It is the human condition, isn’t it? We will find anything to complain about. I try not to complain too much. Lovely unboxing video, thanks for sharing! One can think of this any number of ways, less than $1 per minute of entertainment. $27 per vinyl record. Truly well done presentation. I tend to keep my box sets in the box so I never play them. That’s a bit of a drag with these open lid boxes or lift off boxes. The Bowie boxes I have permanently adjusted so the disks are accessible. Cheers!

      • Tom says:

The former are people who don’t have the set in question and who want it (often because they missed out first time around).

The latter do have the set in question and are worried that reprints will reduce the “market value” of their “asset” (especially if they have paid over the odds for it on eBay/discogs).

You can’t please all of the people all of the time…

        • Dave H says:

The Gentle Giant Unburied Treasures which was a 30 disc live box set. It was limited to 2,000 copies at £250. It sold out pretty quickly but copies were available on secondary sites at inflated prices.
This led to the record company and band to issue another 1,000 identical copies along with signed photo.

I think the Bill Bruford 1977 – 1980 box set also had a similar fete and was reissued.

So it seems that even though these were issued as limited, the goalposts were changed.

      • Catweazle says:

That’s easy. People complaining they aren’t reprinted are the ones who missed out, and people complaining they ARE are the ones that fear their rare box might lose value.

        • Andrew M says:

Just to clarify I would never sell my copy so don’t care about resale value – and I do now see everyone’s point so withdraw my comment :)

  28. Urs says:

Over a THOUSAND pounds on amazon.de?!?!? Are they mental???
