Anniversary package from the mostly bearded trio arrives in June.
Texas trio ZZ Top celebrate a half century of blues rockin’ and hard livin’ with a new compilation called Goin’ 50.
As you might expect with a title like that, the collection features 50 tracks from Billy Gibbons, Frank Beard and Dusty Hill’s career and their 15 albums, with additional extras to entice fans such as two bonus tracks, ‘Salt Lick’ and ‘Miller’s Farm’ – a single and B-side respectively – that were recorded in 1969 by the original incarnation of ZZ Top.
Covering everything from ‘La Grange’, ‘Cheap Sunglasses’ and ‘Tush’, via their 1980s Eliminator peak of ‘Sharp Dressed Man’ and ‘Gimme All Your Lovin’’ and finishing up with tracks from their most recent studio album, 2012’s La Futura Goin’ 50 also offers a pair of live tracks, ‘Waitin’ For The Bus’ and ‘Jesus Just Left Chicago’ from their 2016 Live Greatest Hits set.
The band are also hitting the road in honour of their anniversary, and will be touring the US throughout the summer, with illustrious support from Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cheap Trick and Bad Company all taking turns. No European dates as yet, but keep ‘em peeled.
Goin’ 50 comes in triple CD and 5 LP versions featuring all 50 tracks and is released 16 August 2019. An 18-track single disc round-up, for the casual listener, will also be issued on 14 June (distinguishable by its yellow cover art variation).

I bought the 5 vinyls version! Sound is killer! Totally satisfied!
I really just want the original mixes of the first album and Tejas flat-transferred to CD, and I’m good. The original masters of Deguello, Eliminator, and subsequent albums are all absolutely great (I think the original Warners US Eliminator has issues though?), and in nay case, CSBBQ was a superb comp.
There haven’t been as many ZZ Top comps as people think. I have the awesome 10 CD album box set (Despite it not having a booklet, how dare they! Hahahahaha, that comment is sssooo good!) and a couple of comps, but that 3 disc is irresistible. The fact that they included my fave ZZ track, Can’t Stop Rockin’, on it has me sold. And it’s got Delirious, the final minute or so of that song is glorious. Hopefully there’ll be some quality remastering going on, but either way I’m in. But I’m telling you, if it doesn’t have a booklet, I won’t want it! Hahahahaha! God, that was hilarious. Never saw a better comment on this site!
To be honest, this sounds rather boring to me, and as a career review incomplete as well: Not one track from Degüello?

Why do we still have to wait for a true remaster edition of all their albums just like they have done with Eliminator??!

Otherwise agree that there’s not much to see here. It should be noted that the Eliminator deluxe was very badly remastered, at least if you don’t have HDCD decoding…
I want ZZ Top to remaster the 1987 remixes of their London Records releases. They are terrific! I would pay handsomely for those. Quit giving us shoddy compilations every five years.
Most people (including me) think those remixes were horrific. Why replace Frank Beard with a drum machine?! And the worst thing is that those versions are still all over the radio. Gah!!!
Hard to believe they didn’t include the studio version of Waitin’ For The Bus and Jesus Just Left Chicago. IMO two of the best blues/rock compositions in their repertoire. The live versions are good, but why…?
It’s a bit cheeky asking £17.46 for a single CD when the three disc version is just shy of a pound more! Not quite sure of the logic in that. It’ll be in the £5 or less bin by the end of the year anyway! I have Rancho Texicano which is fine for playing in the car even with it’s faults!
I used to have the shack box of Chrome Smoke & BBQ which was pretty sweet but sold it as I needed cash at the time…I will get this new triple cuz it’s up to date and has some highlights from CSBBQ…the 10CD albums box was pretty cool but lack of a booklet made it not a keeper…I may get a used copy of the regular CSBBQ for the missing stuff not on here, like the 12″ versions and Moving Sidewalks tracks…and a fave Manic Mechanic…I may get the vinyl albums boxes too as they are dropping in price…I may see em live this summer with Cheap Trick…always dug Billy, Dusty & Frank Beard since as a kid…always thought they were immensely cool…
The lack of a booklet made a box set of 10 ZZ Top albums “not a keeper”? Pahahahahaha! I rarely find comments funny anymore, but that one called to me! Love it! A booklet! Like the albums don’t matter, just gimme a booklet! Pahahahahaha! :_D
Hopefully there won’t be a repeat of the 6 pack debacle, where the pre-eliminator stuff was “re-mixed” with electronic percussion.
I’ve got most of ZZ Top’s albums on vinyl and/or original un-brickwalled CDs.
Hard Pass
The remixes were not used on any recent CDs, so I doubt they will go back to using them now.
ZZ Top remasters/remixes/retrospectives are always a mixed bag. Chrome, Smoke & BBQ does a pretty fine job and has even more Moving Sidewalks tracks (including the two here). Lack of post-90’s materials can easily be made up for by gathering those 4 CD’s out of remainder bins, but I think Antenna and Mescalero are the only two required.
Track 17 on disc 3 sounds promising (hopefully remastered) :P :P

“Rancho Texicano” and the single disc “One Foot In The Blues” compilation are probably all that most people would need.
I agree with the earlier writer, “Rancho Texicano” and the single disc “One Foot In The Blues” (from 1994) will make an excellent combo.

ZZ Top truly need an official remaster campaign, where all the albums are given a deluxe treatment, with extra tracks and a consistent mastering process.

Great set, but the packaging could have been MUCH, MUCH BETTER…Cheap & cheerful…
I own the mentioned 10 disc set. What a terrible mess. Half of the discs are remastered and the other half not. When you compare the bass and volume level of Eliminator and Afterburner, the difference is like night and day. I own the older versions of Eliminator, Afterburner and Recycler from the 90’s. Only Eliminator is remastered. The other two sounds same as older versions!
+1 to Jarmo’s comment. The volume level inconsistency between discs on The Complete Studio Albums is maddening.
Rancho Texicano + Chrome Smoke & BBQ are a bit loud and compressed, but at least they’re consistent, and they used the original mixes for the first five albums. Stick with one of those (2-CD vs 4-CD).
No details of if it’s even been remastered or remixed!? Not until these details are announced I would stay away…..because the last compilations sounded like SHIT!!

Despite others’ complaints about content, this compilation does have every U.S. 7″ a-side from 1969-1994, so as a singles compilation it looks good to me. I was not “wow-ed” by the mastering on their other compilations, so hopefully this one will impress me.
Love these guys..one of the best live bands ever ! I have every recording, so why not this one? Long live the spirit of the Blues and Rock and Roll !

The 3-CD pales in comparison to the 2-CD Rancho Texicano from about 15 years ago. The pre-Eliminator selection is terrible: no Brown Sugar, no Just Got Paid, no Blue Jean Blues, and plenty more. Meanwhile, the underwhelming Afterburner gets seven tracks? No thank you!
Meanwhile, if you want the best road trip music, try Eliminator plus the original Best of ZZ Top from the late ’70s. That’s all you really need for quick-and-dirty highlights.

Despite all these compilations, ZZ Top has never gotten the right tracks from the post 90’s albums. Tracks that should be mandatory for a big collection like this include Deal Going Down, Beatbox, Flying High, Trippin’, Drive By Lover, Loaded and Consumption. Throw in Groovy Little Hippy Pad and the live version of Jailhouse Rock.

2000 Blues is missing
Recycled songs packaged in a recycled cover (Antenna)…they should have called the album „Recycler“ (then even the album title would have been recycled….)
the scat 45=salt lick and millers farm is a killer. they were a trio then with guitar, organ ,drums. too bad they only cut these 2 trax, a real one in mint condition will cost bout $150. it was also issued on us and canadian London. value =$50. release was late 69 0n scat and 1/12/70 for the London issue. if you don’t haven’t heard these songs its a must do. they never sounded like that again, I will admit I only like the first 2 lps=first album and rio grande mud.after them I was gone.
They are great tracks, aren’t they. I can see why they might have thought it wasn’t the right direction to go in, though, as that Hammond organ sound had been around a while by the time these were recorded. And we were about to enter a new decade, of course…
Re this release, I would’ve said that the album box set that came out a few years ago was a better buy, but I believe it had some mistakes on it that were never corrected. Stuff like left and right channels swapped.
If you have Chrome, smoke and BBQ you don’t need this. Some new material would have been awesome.

One of those bands I always unintentionally overlook, but looking at that track listing I’m ORDERING this!
