45 responses to Prince 1999 super deluxe sets unboxed

  1. Michael G says:

Box set of the year cd version.
Run very close by the police cd box set, purely because of price and value for money.
Proves you don’t have to spend,£100.00 pounds plus to own something special and worth hearing.

  2. David says:

Can’t wait for this to arrive! AMZ US just dropped the price from $69.99 to 54.99…
the less-inclusive Abbey Road set is still $89

  3. Dim says:

Hi there! Do we know how many copies of the vinyl box set exist ? I guess since it’s disappearing very quickly from everywhere (online and physical stores etc) it is a very limited edition?

  4. Mike M says:

Need some advice Paul, would I be a fool to wait till Christmas for a better price for this 1999 deluxe LP boxset? Or should I just pull the trigger now to secure it? Currently at £185.

    • Paul Sinclair says:

I really don’t know the answer to that. If retailers know that no more are coming, discounts seem unlikely, although you never know with Amazon. Depends how much it would hurt for you to miss out. If the answer is ‘a lot’ then what are you waiting for!? :)

  5. Emilio Lafarga Giribets says:

    Michael c., I think its not a SHM-CD release.

  6. Michael C says:

Just had mine shipped fro cdjapan.
Pressed buy….then read it’s an import disc!!!
Felt sure it would have been pressed there.
Oh well I guess it will turn up as an shm-cd soon..sigh…
At least I had points to redeem plus they were offering a 300 yen special buy.

  7. Danny says:

Wonderful release (I got the CD box). The very personal essay by Duff Mckagan was a big surprise, did not know he was a writer…

  8. Darren says:

Both this new 1999 and recent Purple Rain “remasters” don’t sound improved to me.
Surely they can get 1999 to sound better than this. It’s muffled, with virtually no bass and treble dynamics.
    I can’t tell the difference.

  9. Christian says:

Finally got my CD copy from Amazon US today. Question: My cover of Vault Tracks I seems to have a red stamp that says “Vault Tracks I” directly over the reel-to-reel tape’s sticker that says “Prince, You’re All I Want.” I don’t see this in Paul’s video. Does anyone else have this red stamp? Or is mine flawed?

    • Dag says:

My therapist would tell you you”reframe” it. Yours is a very very rare edition worth several million euro.

      • Christian says:

@Dag, ah yes, I’m very familiar with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy :) I watched a another unboxing video from the US and that person’s disc had the same red stamp; seems to be a difference between US and UK pressings. Or maybe Paul’s is an earlier pressing.

  10. Dan says:

Amazon UK appear to be out of stock of the vinyl box set.

  11. Glenn says:

Picked up the CD/DVD set at my local independent record store on Black Friday along with some of the exclusive RSD vinyl. Only two discs in to listening to it but am enjoying it so far. Look forward to future releases as the reissue campaign continues.

One thing I like about this set is that apparently they didn’t start with the time limitations of vinyl when coming up with the track-listing. This seemed to be the case with the recent Kate Bush rarities material in her recent box sets. Same issue for Bowie’s Loving the Alien box. The Police box set’s b-sides disc being another example (although the CD release may not have been planned for as it came out so much later). Wish other artists would follow the example of this set with more comprehensive releases even if it means a large number of records in the box sets.

  12. Electric Sydney says:

It seems as though Paul’s prediction of rapidly disappearing vinyl box sets is coming true. I’m glad I placed my order through Amazon FR last night.

  13. Michael C. says:

Can someone please confirm that this sounds better than the really loud collection of 10 years ago, Ultimate?
That’s all. It’s very pretty etc but has it been finally mastered sensibly??
Deal breaker for me if it’s another “ear bleeder”

  14. Kauwgompie says:

Thanks Paul, great video! I’m getting this for sure on cd but I’m now thinking about getting the vinyl as well. I don’t do vinyl but I may get it because it is so beautifully done. And it comes with the downloads and the dvd. I always rip the cd’s in my computer and then play it on Sonos everywhere in my house, I can do that with the download code as well. That vinyl box is absolutely gorgeous. It’s expensive and I just spend a fortune on Black Friday deals and the German 3 for €25. I’ll have to wait a little for than vinyl set. Thanks for showing all that! Very informative.

  15. Larry Davis says:

I hit the stores yesterday after work, both to see what RSD releases were left at Newbury Comics & to see the 1999 SDE…not much left RSD there so I am off to Mr Cheapo’s after work today to see their selection as they usually have a good assortment left of RSD product after RSD itself…but with 1999, Target only has the 2CD version but good price on that…but at Newbury, no copies of the SDE 5CD/DVD, but they only got 1 in and charging $79.99, too high…but they did have the vinyl box, which is both beautiful and heavy…felt at least 20 pounds, hard to handle with just 1 hand I agree…their price?? $250 smackaroos…yes high, but with how limited it is, and online sellers all out…could be a limited pressing (I cannot see how long this will stay in print), and this will not go down in value aside from opening it…if there is that copy not sold and around in a week or so, I may go for it, and get the CD set down the line as well…nice touch, Prince’s eye like the original label on both the new vinyl & CDs…my one quibble, why is the vinyl in the big box black and only the 4LP set purple?? Should be both purple…I do wonder if the content in the CD book is the same as the bigger nicer LP book or edited for size??

  16. Stephen says:

Just finished listening to the 4 sides of vault tracks from the vinyl box set. I’m in purple prince heaven. If you’re a prince fan then this is a must imo. The packaging is also lovely to have in my hands, look at and read while listening. More of this please Prince estate

  17. David Mcintyre says:

Bought the cd set yesterday. An absolute treasure of a set. If the other big albums are done like this then I’m on board with the program

  18. Daniel ( from Berlin ) says:

this is a perfect SUPER DELUXE EDITION. both formats are done with beautiful details and much information about the vault tracks. especially all the pictures of the master tapes are amazing. i hope that it needs not 30 years from now to see those fantastic box sets of all ABBA albums. i would like to have them in my lifetime.

  19. Chuck says:

    Great video Paul.
Both sets are beautifully done, I do wish the main LP was a gatefold like the CD tho.
I hope you unbox the other sets as well, I’m curious about the 4LP especially.

  20. Musiclover72 says:

Thanks Paul for another fantastic review. I’m waiting patiently for the postman to deliver my vinyl box set. I immediately preorder from Amazon as soon as I saw the release announcement on SDE for £199 but only ended up paying £157 with p&p on Thursday when payment was taken so quite a big saving. Sometimes it’s definitely worth preordering with Amazon. Now waiting to see what the next Prince SDE will be. On a different subject if any readers here are looking for the Madonna limited yellow vinyl of I’m Breathless which is exclusive to Barnes & Noble the online store has stock available again. I paid $21 last night for my copy.

  21. Jimmy Agates says:

Great looking set. Mine is in transit as I type from the US. Warners Australia has the CD set for $125 (+$10 shipping) whilst mine cost $83 landed. Warners is charging $400 for the vinyl box. This is the nonsense we deal with here in the land downunder :-(

PS as for the editing between 1999 and Little Red Corvette the index point is the same 0n my original cd version…

  22. Francois says:

This is indeed amazing, I pre-ordered the CD version upon announcement of release, but the vinyl version I just saw here is mouth watering to say the least.. But the price range… Yet it is so tempting..
Anyway, one thing I just realized reading the tracklist, there are no promo videos (music videos) of the singles on the DVD? We get a music video version of let’s pretend we’re married but not the video?

  23. Richard says:

Both formats look fantastic, a real labour of love, got to wait for Santa to bring mine annoyingly. I am beyond excited for the Parade and SOTT ones if they are anything like this one

  24. Mr Smyth says:

Nearly 200 quid on Amazon for the record boxset right now. Looks brilliant & like a lot of thought has gone into it which is excellent to see. As a punter who already has the album, I would only buy the live stuff so hopefully that will see light of day in its own right one day.

  25. Celkens says:

Paul, Thanks for another very informative unboxing video which managed to both whet my appetite and warned me to get a move on because of possibly fast disappearing stock. Managed to snag the 10LP version at JPC for €175 using a 20% discount code i got in the mail a couple of days ago. the boxset was already on my wishlist after your dissection of the vault tracks and after listening to the podcast the Prince estate released about the making of 1999. I am now a very happy camper!

  26. Klaus says:

    Hi Paul,

that looks as if there had been quite some thought put into this.

There’s only one thing i don’t get and that is why they made a gatefold for the cd of the original album when it is only one record. The vinyl version has two records for that but these are presented in a single album cover with a wider spine like it originally was in 1982.

Did Michael Howe say anything about that matter when you spoke to him?

    • Larry Davis says:

Oh I forgot, Klaus…the original album was a double album, a 2-record set, of 11 songs, and the sleeve not gatefold…the album in Europe originally was an edited, 1-record & 7 tracks…to clear up any confusion…

  27. daveid76 says:

This is Superdeluxeedition porn and I’m hooked.

  28. Michael says:

Interesting. I have the Japan shm CD. And bought the original album back in 80’s. One thing I was looking forward to was a clear sounding Little Red Corvette which from what I heard online & from another commentator here is not in this. Still not sure whether to buy it. I will buy Around The World, Parade, Sign & Lovesexy if they do those 100%.

  29. vikerii says:

Amazon not shipping my set until next week…:( Going out now to the local walmart and target to hopefully find the 5CD box.

I believe Prince’s music — and us — are in great hands with Michael Howe. I truly hope he can find a way to release Lust U Always and Extraloveable someday. I believe he’ll be able to come up with a way.

  30. william says:

Would luv to get both versions of this. This looks fantastic.

  31. Dave R says:

Fopp were selling the CD deluxe box set for the outrageous price of £85 today!

  32. Steve Bliss says:

OMG, that vinyl box is beautiful! I *love* that the vinyl set is a full-on super deluxe edition, and not some kind of slimmed-down sidecar add-on to the “primary” CD box. LP box has all the audio and video content, plus the digital downloads for the music!

Both the CD & LP boxes look really well designed and executed. The only tiny hitch I noticed in the video is the CDs seem very tight in their sleeves, which is annoying.

I’ll be satisfied with my CD version arriving this week, but that book in the LP set is incredible!

I didn’t hear — what’s the format/resolution of the digital download from the vinyl box?

  33. memoryboy says:

Great video. I got my CD copy. So there’s a few things I’m slightly disappointed with… the sound quality. On the first two tracks, on CD 1.. It’s really nothing. I have this album on vinyl already. Maybe I’m just use it that copy. I would say overall this re-issue and the other 4 CDs it’s excellent.

The first CD of the original album sounds to me, I don’t know, slightly muffled a little bit compared to the other 4 CDs. It may not be noticable to others. It’s not quite as dynamic as the other CDs especially the album version of ‘1999’ but it still sounds okay. It’s not as dynamic in sound as the ‘Purple Rain’ re-issue if you compare.

The thing that really bothers me is they cut off the very end of the album version of ‘1999’ on the album version, There’s that drum hit, the drum “crash” that ends the song, and I would think that ‘Little Red Corvette’ fades in, and they basically started Little Red Corvette with the drum “smash” at the end of ‘1999’… and I just think it’s awkward, and I have my own vinyl copy of this album where I ripped it years ago and I ended 1999 with that drum smashing at the end and then it starts with ‘Little Red Corvette ‘fading in as track 2. It does bother me that they mastered it that way.

Glad I got my vinyl rip still.
But it’s not the end of the world.

But going through all the tracks on the other CDs they sound great, I mean really really great, and this is such an exciting release because there’s so much to explore on here, so ultimately I’m happy, but I just think they kind of screwed up the very end of track one, CD 1, with ‘1999’… I don’t mind the beginning of ‘Little Red Corvette, necessarily starting with the drum smashing but I just would have done it differently.

This re-issue and all the extras made my Holidays EXCITING!

    • Attila Nemeti says:

@memoryboy – Yes, the way 1999 and Little Red Corvette are separated is annoying, but it is done the same way on the original CD master.

    • Harcourt Fenton Mudd says:

RE: “. . . ‘Little Red Corvette’ fades in, and they basically started Little Red Corvette with the drum “smash” at the end of ‘1999’…”

I have the early CD version of 1999 album (the one with 10 instead of 11 songs (D.M.S.R. is missing) and I can confirm that the exact same tracks divide is on this cd that is on the new cd as you have described.

i.e. Little Red Corvette does start with the final cymbal crash/drum hit of the song 1999.

So this is not a mistake. It is as the cd version of the album has always been.

It does seem a bit odd, but they had to divide the track somewhere, and it has always been this way for the cd version of the album (I assume the later 11-track cd is the same too).

  34. Otto says:

Thank you for the video, I bought the vinyl version. Love the artwork, details and prints that come with it.
