Had a listen to this recently and have to say it’s not aged well. As a nostalgia purchase this “SDE” doesn’t offer value for money.
    Thanks for the video, Paul!

  2. Buffalo G says:

I pre-ordered the gold vinyl with signed print back in November. Vinyl arrived – looks nice, but was really really happy about the signed print. Stupidly did an A/B comparison with my original Circa Vinyl – oops. The new master is noticeably duller compared to the original. Ah well, these things happen – the signed print makes up for it!

Had a lengthy delay waiting for the audio download code to work – Push only received the audio this week or last week and when you get the wav’s they spelt her name wrong (Nenah).

With the wav download, they give you the bonus tracks that were on the original CD and cassette:

    Buffalo Stance
    Manchild
    Kisses on the Wind
    Inna City Mamma
    The Next Generation
    Love Ghetto
    Heart
    Phoney Ladies
    Outré Risqué Locomotive
    So Here I Come
    My Bitch (Bonus track)
Heart (It’s a Demo) (Bonus track)
Buffalo Stance (Sukka mix) (Bonus track)
Manchild (The Old School mix) (Bonus track)

So, plus and minuses all round really; dull mastering, great art print and extra tracks !

  3. fedge says:

Is there a replacement disc program yet?

  4. christian says:

It’s taken care of on Spotify, disc 3 is now only 8 tracks :)
Track 4 has been removed so that mix only appears once as the 12″ Spanish Mix.
    Plus it includes Buffalo Blues.

  5. Jeremy says:

The 3 lp box looks a bit more substantial. Is it? It would have been nice to see that too for comparison. It’s not a lot more expensive.

  6. Melvin says:

I agree with your observations Paul. It looks stylish but the added content is fairly minimal. I would have liked the inclusion of unreleased stuff. A few demos or early versions would have been good. The signed print justified my purchase having got the original album, which is indeed brilliant, and all her singles. Some of the remixes are pretty good and there is a triple A list of remixers involved: Arthur Baker, David Morales, Massive Attack, Kevin Saunderson, Smith And Mighty. So it’s a bit of a historic document. Quality control is a bit sloppy with the double inclusion of the 7 minute Kissed mix on the third disc. Still, great to see work by this artist back in the shops and getting some attention. Hopefully some people will discover this record for the first time.

    • Dave says:

Value is often hard to determine, but when you have such a wide price difference between the single CD and the box it does become clearer.
I have bought several of the new Gold series ( 3 CD’s ) for 5 pounds and a few of the 80’s mixes for 2.99 , again 3 CD sets. So 42 for the box doesn’t look value to me!

  7. Bruno says:

The unboxing videos are really a treat. Always to the point. Please do (even) more ! I would not buy this boxset even if it was EUR 1 but I wouldn’t miss the unboxing video.

  8. Ross Baker says:

As someone whose collection is heading more into the digital domain these days, a large format reissue is definitely preferable for me: a digipak is nice, but not something I’m likely to want to take off the shelf very often, so this package appeals on an aesthetic level. But the actual amount of content compared with the price is pretty poor. Probably be something I’ll pick up down the line…

    • Paul Sinclair says:

The problem with large format is that if you don’t buy vinyl and only buy CDs, storage can be an issue. However if it’s done well enough (a good example is the Wet Wet Wet ‘Popped in Souled Out’) then it’s easier to forgive.

      • Ross Baker says:

My vinyl collection is practically non-existent, but I do have a shelf set aside for 12″ box sets now – some favourites include the James Laid / Wah-Wah box and all of Underworld’s, which are all in nice sturdy boxes with extensive books, and well worth the money. I also have a couple of shelves set aside for roughly-DVD-sized sets which are filling up nicely.
On the other hand I have pretty easily adjustable shelving – if you’ve got solid unmovable shelves then I agree it must be a pain!

      • Derek Langsford says:

I am a digital-only collector and used to avoid any CD sets that were taller than a CD jewel case because of the storage issue but found as CD boxed sets started to vary in dimensions and DVD-A discs came in taller cases than CDs, I had to adapt my storage to accommodate them. But that created difficulty in organizing my music collection. Now an artist with multiple format releases is split across different shelves e.g. I have Fleetwood Mac CDs, a DVD-A, and their 12 x 12 boxed sets in three separate shelves. Very disturbing for one’s OCD. :-)

        • Gareth Jones says:

I basically have to put box sets on the book cases, away from the rest of my music. Examples of random sizes in my collection include the Blur box set which is basically a cube, being neither the size of a CD nor a 12-inch (I think it’s more like 9inches by 9inches), and the Ben Folds box set ‘Brick’, which is basically the shape and size of a large brick!

      • Jason says:

Totally agree with you Paul. The size of some box sets actually puts me off buying them as I simply don’t have the space to put them.

  9. Gio says:

The 12″ Cover is very thin and can be bend very easily. Would be better to use quality as they use for standard vinyl covers.

  10. Jonathan Riley says:

I heard back from the official online store and this was their response
    Thank you for your email.

We have not been made aware of this issue with our stock however, as you did not order from our store this is not something we can assist with I am afraid. Your contract of sale will be with the retailer in which you purchased from so you would need to speak to them so they can speak to their supplier as to whether there is an issue. They will also be able to offer a replacement or refund.

Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

    Many thanks,

    Jon

      it’s a scandal
      i received the same email
      UNIVERSAL DOESNT CARE ABOUT CLIENTS
      shame on them

      • Mike the Fish says:

Universal are great at exploiting their back catalogue, but their quality control, customer service and pricing levels can be really bad. Warners have managed to do a 3CD, 1 DVD and vinyl sets for around £40 in a hard slip case.

        • Randy Metro says:

“Universal are great at exploiting their back catalogue, but their quality control, customer service and pricing levels can be really bad.”

Isn’t most of their back catalogue kept in an urn?

      • christian says:

    • Klaus says:

      @Jonathan Riley:

I beg your pardon if i missed out something but what exactly is your issue with this?

    • Gary Fowles says:

Sorry, but what is this in reference to?

      • Paul Sinclair says:

Two of the mixes being identical

        • Klaus says:

I was afraid so. Of course a mistake but in remembrance of what else has gone wrong with SDEs from other artists and other companies over the years a minor one IMHO and no need to make a fuss about.

          • seikotsi says:

Has anyone talked to Amazon customer service about this? I ordered from the French site, but not sure how well I would explain the issue in French.

          • Paul Sinclair says:

What are Amazon going to do? This issue is entirely the fault of Universal and only they can do something about it.

  11. eric says:

Thank for the video. I appreciate your opinion on it. Having most of her cd singles, the price is a bit high at the moment. I visited her concert in Bruges in Belgium last summer. What a relaxed lady! And what a great band she brought along!
    Keep on unboxing, please …

  12. Arnd says:

It uses the same font style as “Headlines and Deadlines” by a-ha. The line-length-justified-by-variable-font-size style.
I think it is even the same font.

  13. fredpostman says:

I got the 3 cd version for just over 20 quid after a SDE link [thanks Paul by the way]from Amazon France, BUT it is not worth the crazy price of over £30 any where.

  14. John Orr says:

Yeah, picked this up for £21 earlier this year on Amazon fr., much more like it price wise. Packaging is wasteful for what you get in terms of booklet content, and you’re right Paul, there should be deals in the future. Excellent vid once more!

  15. AudioDile says:

Kisses on the Wind had four different mixes releases in the initial U.S. 12″ and then another 3 or 4 after that. Of which we get 3 different mixes.

I’m positively flabbergasted that whomever did the quality control on this set didn’t figure out that the “A Little More Puerto Rican” remix is in fact identical to the Spanish 12″ Mix, which has already been released on multiple CDs for years. It was never hard to get and now we get it twice in a row on the same disc.

Meanwhile, the arguably superior English 12″ Mix which has even more vocal remixing done to it and has NEVER seen CD release, remains that way. Utterly ridiculous.

    • Kevin Hughes says:

I was always under the impression that the UK 12” extended mix of ‘Buffalo Stance’ was identical to the album mix?

  16. mike says:

My guess is they would have sold twice as much at £20ish as they will do at £40ish. Itll end up the same revenue for Circa (or whoever owns them now)! There is very little new material in the booklet so that’s just re-using already paid for content. Shame is that there is at least another disc of missing remixes, which could have been redone at the same time and been released digitally, even if it didnt suit the cost forecast for the set. It’s a good buy at £25, no more as you said Paul

  17. JuzzyB says:

You have said it all really, Paul – I was pleased with this set for £20ish from Amazon France, but I don’t think it is worth much more than that. I was quite surprised when I discovered the sleeve was thin card, a hardcover would have made a much nicer package.

  18. bertielego says:

Aren’t tracks 3 and 4 on CD3 identical mixes with a different name?

  19. Kauwgompie says:

Paul, great video. Another reason why I love this site and check it every hour of the day, is that you keep it real. That was a great review. Brilliant album but this SDE is not worth the price, and why leave Buffalo Blues off the cd version? It would be interesting if you interview the guy at a record label who decides the pricing of these boxes. Is it done with the artist or solely decided by the label? Could it be that this is a small print (because they didn’t think there would be much interest) and to recover the cost, this is what the price had to be? Howard Jones One To One SDE was indeed much cheaper but it was small. Nothing much for the eye to look at. A 12”x12” box set like the Neneh Cherry SDE is a beautiful size, one reason why people go back to vinyl but does it then increase the price by £10? All questions a pricing guy at a label could easily answer and a very interesting read I would think. Anyway, great video, many thanks!!

    • EW99 says:

What’s even worse is that there are two identical remixes (albeit with different names) on CD3. Someone really wasn’t paying attention.
